Hi Hi my name is Paul. I’m starting a small business where you can watch proper Italian TV out here in Australia.

There are three formats that currently looking into
1. Placeshifting Devices
2. IPTV
3. Satellite TV

1. Placeshifting devices: These Devices enable you to have a Italian TV STB connected to a Slingbox or a Monsoon Vulkano. You will have a minimum between 2 to 3Mbps upload speed to send the feed to your computer or receiving device here in Australia. The devices and STB will be stored in a DATA Centre in Italy. To watch Italian TV you can use a PC or a Mac Mini that enable you to connect it up to a plasma or LCD screen. Both Sling and Monsoon have released Players software for you to install on both PC and Mac mini. To change channels you can either use a remote control with a Trackball or just wireless mouse.

Average viewing speed and Video resolution:
Slingbox: 1.5Mbps on 1280*720
Monsoon Vulkano: 2Mbps on 720*480

Best Internet provider that will give you the best connection will internode.

Estimated cost for Equipment and Set up cost between $400 up to $1000
Estimated monthly cost between $30 up to $60

These prices maybe cheaper pending on deals with Data Centres and ISP in Italy.

2. IPTV: IPTV is internet protocol television this will work similar to other competitors out here in Australia. Unfortunately I don’t have rough costing figures on Set up and monthly cost but as soon as I get it I will edited and put it up on here.

3. Satellite TV: This is an easy option however it’s a very expensive operation to run. Many companies have come and gone in the past twenty years. To set this up.  Broadcast rights need to be sign off with channel providers. License agreement between broadcast authorities and satellite providers need to dealt with. A channel from Europe needs to be uplink or fibre link from Europe to here in Australia. Once here it then get uplink to a particular satellite here in Australia.

Estimated Start up business cost Roughly $500000
Estimated Monthly cost pending how many subscribe straight away
so $500000/2000 subscribers/12months could equal  $20.83 per month
Estimated Satellite and set top box roughly $500

Why am I writing all of this? It’s to let the Italian community know that I want to start up a business out here in Australia. But to make it successful research and you feed back will be required to make this business happen?   Hi my name is Paul. Good luck in getting your business up and running. I know the Italian community here in Australia wants to see more than the sub-standard "Rai Italia".

A lot of the ex-pat Italians who watch TV are in their senior years so I don't know how they will deal with the Slingbox/Vulkano solution but if you can deliver a product that's easy to use then I'm sure you'll have a large number of people taking you up on your service.

Have you heard of a company called FilmOn? It's a UK based company and they stream a number of FTV UK TV stations online, but they also show quite a few Italian channels for free.

Currently they have:

Rai 1
Rai 2
Rai 3
Camera dei Deputati
Italia 1
Rete 4
Canale 5

Their site is: http://www.filmon.com
