G'day,

MTR has closed, and all the stations noted in that network, are now back to 64kbps

MTR's channel is now a duplicate of SEN and 1377 is playing My MP

In Sydney noticed that Sky Racing Word, the audio simulcast of the Foxtel channel, has gone. So Sky Sports Radio 1 and 2 are now both at 64kbps. And Sydney now has 48 stations, down from 49.

Good to know that it wasn't just my reciever that wouldn't pick up Sky Racing World, even better to know that Sky Sports 2 is now at 64kbps Stereo which is a lot better than 32kbps Mono, despite the fact I'm not a hardcore punter/horse racing fan. :)

Also interesting to know that Sky Racing World was an audio simulcast of the TV channel on Foxtel.

New channel on DAB+ 9a 202.928MHz in Sydney.
I think it's from Fairfax/2UE, it's named M3, but there is no audio on my receiver, & it's coming up as DAB (not DAB+), it's running at 48Kbps, & the audio type indicator, keeps changing from Single Channel, Joint Stereo, Stereo & Dual Channel.

Anyone with any ideas as to what it may be, & why it's coming up as only DAB?

Doesn't matter, it's coming up properly now. It's a copy/relay of Triple M Melbourne, also the same in Brisbane apparently. Wonder why we want 2 x Triple M's though, outside of Brisbane Triple M doesn't rate highly.
Looks like they've reduced 2MMM Sydney to 64k down from 96k, & reduced Main Stage to 48k down from 64k, to fit it in.

That makes 6 Southern Cross Austereo stations in Sydney now, if they reduce/can get away with, all their stations running at 48k, they can have 8 stations, flooding/overrunning the Digital radio platform, using their huge company size to crush the opposition & take hold of the market share. That'd give them 8 out of 26 commercial digital stations in Sydney or 31% (if my calculations are right) of the market, making almost 1/3 of Sydney digital commercial radio stations being Austereo owned & controlled.

That also makes the current 18% in the Analogue market (2 station max. ownership per market), pale into insignificance.
I've counted 2KY Sky Sports radio in both those figures (digital & analogue), take them out & its, 20% for analogue (2 out of 10), & 35% for digital (8 out of 23). I haven't counted any community or ABC/SBS stations in either.

Yeah, it's similar in Melbourne - M3 and Main Stage are 48kbps, with Buddah, Radar, Fox and Triple M at 64kbps. Melbourne unlike Sydney never had any 96kbps stations.

Are they in stereo, G4M? I would have thought 32kbs (nominal) marginal for speech, let alone music.

I've uploaded a sample - obviously there's receiver things to consider - but in order the samples are CW Mix 90's, Mix 101.1, Edge Digital, Mix 90's (a different station to the "CW Mix 90's"), Gold Plus and Gold 104.3 (didn't record Mix 80s at any point)

Thanks, GoForMoe. It was easy to download the flac file.  My quick impressions:

Station Subjective impression
1. CW Mix 90's,   Good
2. Mix 101.1, Poor (wooshy)
3. Edge Digital, Reasonable
4. Mix 90's,   Unpleasant SBR, weak core
5. Gold Plus Average (wooshy)
6. Gold 104.3    Good

The sound quality is surprisingly reasonable. I think this is because of limited stereo. That's a good compromise in my view: reduce the stereo but improve the basic sound.

In relation to 4 above, it's interesting to compare the first 14 seconds of it with the YouTube file  of Eyes Open ("another track sang and written by Taylor Swift for The Hunger Games soundtrack"):

For my ears, the YouTube file has more apparent stereo, and a much more solid and vibrant sound overall. Compression artefacts can be heard, but to a lesser extent.  The YouTube (at whatever bitrate it may be) beats the DAB+ 32kbps (nominal) hands down.

Tell me guys, has digital radio gone the same way as FTA TV where the quality of the audio has suffered like the bitrate of TV has?

Yep.

Actually, it started out with rubbish bitrates and then got worse.

The most offensive part of it is that, on the commercial muxes, you get talkback channels hogging a semi-decent 80kbps - but actual music is relegated to 32~64kbps, and so they sound noticeably crap.

Radio Sport National (Sport 927 as they used to be known) have started a secondary channel in Melbourne - called RSN Carnival it is covering their Spring Racing Carnival coverage in a supplementary way.
