What settings are Samsung 64D8000 plasma owners using?

JohnA pointing me to these settings -> http://www.avsforum....d.php?t=1333561

Any recommendations are wanted.

Great feedback, Owen.

I'm currently eyeing off the 60 inch ST30 myself. Looking at the other contenders, the ST seems to offer the best blend of price, performance and sheer screen real estate...

My recommendation is learn the fundamentals of what the settings do, buy a decent colour metre and come up with your own settings.

Sound advice but it aint going to happen so if anyone is willing to add their settings it would be greatly appreciated.

At least get a Blu Ray version of Digital Video Essentials. Using someone else's settings is no guarantee of the right result, besides as Owen says, its better to play around a bit yourself and see what happens. In the end though, professional calibration is best.

My 65VT30 comes tomorrow and I will have it isf calibrated in due course (as I have for the previous two plasma panels)

It would be great if you could.  I'm just looking for ball park calibrations here.

Don't waste your money on blu ray version of DVE put that money towards a simple colorimeter and download a free copy of calibration software.  If you know how to play around you don't really need pro calibration to bring the best out of your display.  Over the time owning a colorimeter and learn to do it yourself is more cost effective than having the pro calibration considering you will need to re-calibrate the TV and if you own a projector like I do further calibration is required after the lamp settles down and becoming dimmer.  I could easily seeing myself doing 8 calibrations on two display I own during their life cycle so $500 on a good meter and software package is well sent considering it will almost certainly cost you over $,000 to get the pro calibration.

Colour tone Warm 2

Rest of the settings are either at off or low.

Next thing I will do is to do auto calibration with Lumagen Mini to see if I can yield more from this panel. As said by others copying the above setting may not be helpful but you can try it.

Interesting that these settings are quite different to the ones found on AVS ( http://www.avsforum....d.php?t=1333561 ):
Cell Light  20
Contrast 96
Sharpness 0

I was surprised at the AVS settings to be honest but they actually look really good.

There is no ideal setting for Contrast, it depends on ambient lighting and personal preference. In a bright environmnet you need a relatively high setting or the picture will look dull, however in a dark room even a modest setting will be very bright and hard on the eyes. Therefore you will need a different set of adjustments for Brightness, Contrast and Gamma for day and night viewing unless lighting can be controlled.

There are test patterns to establish the ideal sharpness setting but personal preference also comes into play.

Without understanding what you are attempting to achieve and understanding what the various settings do so you know what to adjust to get the desired result success will be limited.

Well, I don't really disagree with any of that. My point was just don't copy someone's calibration settings and expect that will yield optimum results. It's a starting point if that. Adjustment for your own circumstances will always be better, ie take ancillary equipment into account, ambient light conditions, your particular screen, etc.

Your point about the colorimeter is an equally valid one, in fact being a bit of a gadget freak, I have just ordered an X-rite i1 Display 3 colorimeter for <$300, and have downloaded ColorHCFR software, so we will see how that goes. Might even get ChromaPure in due course. Already have the AVS HD709 test disc as well as the DVE HD Basics Blu Ray. I can see lots of time wasting coming up.

Will really give the wife the irrits now

I remember a while ago when Aaron from Avical was calibrating my Pio 50XDA that he mentioned that the settings that he was arriving at in Australia differed consistently from reported calibration settings overseas, so just be wary about adopting these overseas settings (well apart from my previous misgivings about just using any settings, local or overseas, without testing your self via DVE/diy colorimeter/isf calibration)

Hey Owen,

Thought you might want to provide an opinion on this:

I am seriously considering this TV, and whilst I'm no videophile I think this would bother me a bit, can't say I notice it on my current 58 Sammy.

Thanks

Film is 24 frames for second so medium slow panning shots will show jitter when displayed properly.
Displaying film source at 60Hz (Cinema smooth off) results in judder due to the unequal 3-2 frame sequence required to fit 24 into 60.
Frame interpolation can smooth out low frame rate jitter but its an artificial "enhancement" that not everyone likes.

The youtube video is probably shot with a 60Hz video camera and you are probably viewing it on a 60Hz LCD so it will look terribly and nothing like the actual TV in use.

Why not go and look at the D8000 for your self displaying Bluray.

Hi Owen,

Thanks for the reply.

Checked out Myer Doncaster and looked at a 65VT30 and 64D8000 side by side, have to say under the same lighting conditions I preferred the D8000.

However, I then noticed another big TV behind them, an LG 65 LCD/LED. I have to say the picture was fairly good and could imagine with some time tweaking it at home I could make it look a lot better.

Given the pricing of the LG and knowing my kids could have the Wii and PS3 connected without worrying about it being left on all day on one image, this seems like agood buy......and then again there's the Sharp 70 inch now..........

I brushed past the Sharp 70" last week at HN when looking at the VT30 and it did look sexy. Pity the screen was showing an animation so it was impossible to tell anything about picture quality.

It's also hard to correlate the Oz model numbers with other Sharp panels elsewhere, eg US, where the Elite models get a pretty good wrap. If the Australian model was similar to the US models, then it would definitely be worth a second look. You can never have too much real estate!

Saw a 65VT30 in JBHiFi Chaddy ticketed for $4,300 on Saturday.

Also saw an LG 65 inch LCD at Hardly Normal Clearance for $3,488.

I would have thought that you could pick up the 65VT30 for a fair bit less than 4.3k.

I can't afford it but I'd be running to Len Wallis Audio.
This in his newsletter this morning.

"The good news is that we have just secured a small quantity of THP65VT30 65” screens which we will be offering at $2,699. This is an exceptional buy. It was the 55” version of this screen which won the ‘Best 52”+ TV award in the What Hi-Fi awards above – where it sells for considerably more than what we are asking for the 65” version here in Australia".

That sounds like ST30 money to me, may be a misprint in the newsletter....

EDIT

Thought so: http://lenwallisaudi...n-tv/thp65st30a
