Its a no ratings period so if you can find any native HD programming on Mate Gem or One - please let me know..............what a friggin sham!
Friends, McLeods and all the movies on GEM in the next 24 hours are in HD native.

ONE has a bunch of American HD sports straight off the satellite.

7mate today has My Wife & Kids, How I Met Your Mother, Reaper, and -- not sure about these -- Megastructures, Jersey Shore, Monster Garage.

And if you live in my suburb, you can tune to channel 40 where you'll find NHK Japan which is basically 100% HD all the time.

There's roughly as much HD on now as there's ever been, even if the PQ is a bit on the edge.

I said in my suburb, which is in Sydney.  We have a CATV system with a bunch of free channels added.

Perth test kicks off today...should mean the eastern states at least get some live play on GEM each night in HD due to the time difference.

I know, hardly earth shattering, but hopefully an improvement from the previous couple of tests.

You make a good point.  I'll be hangin out to see what the PQ is like.  GEM in the regions has only just been upgraded so native HD programs at least look something like true HD.

I doubt Melb/syd will see any coverage on gem this test, its only 10 min of the second session that would be missed due to the 6 pm news.

Watching a little while ago, I heard James Brayshaw say "for those around the country watching earlier on 9 in high definition"...

Just where might they be James? Those working in the nein/WIN playout centres or at Fox Sports? The paltry 10 mins on GEM wasn't all that!

On WIN GEM it was upscaled at the most. Nothing like native HD. You only need to look at crowd shots which are always crisp and clean if it's native.

In Cairns it was terrible PQ on GEM - ok on VAST though (for all of thirty minutes!)

GEM in Sydney whilst looking better than 9 is either an SD upconvert or a rubbish bitrate... I'm thinking more SD upconvert though as there is still a fair bit of aliasing and MPEG artifacts.

What a joke, half an hour then back to Antiques Roadshow! :hmm:

Foxtel's highlights is in true HD. But it is not good enough. Watching Australia humiliate India in SD is embarrassing.

It was definitely HD native, and maybe you should turn down your sharpening filter  :-)

CKent, I have no sharpening employed. How do you know "definitely"? :logik:

I'll go for the rubbish bitrate then...

You probably have *some* sharpening.  It's unlikely you'd have it turned down to zero on your TV.  Pretty sure every TV has this setting.

Anyway I may have solved the mystery here.  I'm playing back the recording of WIN GEM from Saturday, and only the second half was in native HD.

This is probably the same point at which I watched Nine GEM (metro).

How do I know "definitely"?  It's really damn obvious when you have a full HD TV.

No I specifically turn sharpening down to zero, I am quite into calibration of my (yes) full HD screen @1.7m. You really don't need to tell me that every TV has this setting... it's a little condescending to he honest. :getlost:

I disagree with you, I think it's quite obvious it is up-converted. Look at the aliasing on the horizontal fence poles and the artifacts around the players on long distance shots. This is not characteristic of native HD even on a starved bitrate. I don't think we can have a conclusive answer unless someone here works for channel nine.

Either way it's bloody half an hour so WGAFF... :ike:

Bloody hell, it was only 10 minutes of the tea break that was HD on WIN GEM.

Even the second section of the tea break went back to upscaled HD on WIN GEM.

So yeah, if you were seeing upscaled HD, that explains it.
