Bloody hell, it was only 10 minutes of the tea break that was HD on WIN GEM.

Even the second section of the tea break went back to upscaled HD on WIN GEM.
Indeed - I've uploaded a short clip of GEM Melbourne going between an upconvert and native HD, watch it in HD, the switch happens at 5 seconds in. It happened at least twice in the space of half an hour.

Gives you the s*%#s doesn't it? A paltry 10 minutes and they still can't do it properly. And don't get me started on that bloody horrible watermark from WIN...gee I didn't know I was watching live cricket on a crappy SD channel, WIN, thanks for the reminder...

WIN's NRL coverage is equally awful, but if you want a reality check on just how bad outside sports broadcast television in Australia has become, check 7's AFL coverage.  If its possible to transmit in a minus bit rate, I reckon 7 has found the answer.

I agree, AFL on 7/Prime is shocking. Thank Christ I won't be watching it on FTA!

Back on to the cricket - WTF is with nine shifting the WWOS watermark further in for the cricket show? WIN haven't even bothered to move their wonderful coverup bug, so us poor saps in regional areas cop the double watermark!

WWOS is showing the annoying LIVE watermark on the cricket today. The highlights on FOX SPORTS is in superb HD.

G'day BigVic,

WWOS isn't actually showing the Cricket Live watermark, that's WIN doing that!

The source feed only has the Nine watermark, nothing underneath it

Looks like Wednesday's one day match between India and Sri Lanka will be shown on Gem only and presumedly in HD. I guess since Australia isn't playing the anti syphoning rules don't apply.

Sunday's game switched to GEM here in Qld during the news and the picture was bloody awful - full of compression artefacts and the like.  It was actually worse than Win SD.

LOL you've just got to laugh at the state of digital TV in this country when India Vs SL is in HD on GEM but when our own country is playing we get to watch it in SD glory HAHAHAHAHHAAHA

Are you watching it on a 2" mobile phone screen?

Don't be so dramatic

He did say 'barely unwatchable', so sounds like they were fine.

Had a chuckle before, all the radio stations news services are reporting the death of 50 over cricket after 9 have decided to put today game on their digital channel gem.
LOL
They are actually doing us a favour. At least now we can watch it on HD!

But is it HD? Looks upscaled to me here...still awful aliasing on the boundary/fence/stands...

Regarding the news items, I thought the same thing! If you're in regional Vic (as I am) regional SA or QLD you've only got digital anyway! Must be sad for all those people in Cap cities who are still watching the cricket on 9 on their 26" Rank Arena Deep Image telly's from 1976!

It was mpeg2 at 10mbps in melb. Only half the bitrate of fox sports HD but still better than SD9 dvd standard garbage!

In Cairns its running at about 9.5mbps and looking very upscaled with the usual artefacts.  Much better on VAST (MPEG 4); not sure of the bit rate though as I can't do a reading of the UEC sat decoder.

I was rather stunned to see full HD Sri Lanka/India on GEM last night. Much of it more than acceptable though obviously suffering from insufficient bitrate. From WIN Albury.

Yes it was quite a surprise. It seemed to be HD this time in Sydney too, quite detailed, although not on a high enough bit-rate. A vast improvement over what is dished up on 9SD.

In a surprise, GEM got a 6.3% share last night (I think its the highest for the channel) yet the cricket was only avergaed at 280,000 for the night session (it did finish late) and was the 3rd most watched digital only channel program behind Heartbeat and Neighbours

Honestly, I expected better than that...

How do you guys find out the bit rate/compression etc? My TV doesn't tell me all that? Is it only online users?

It definately looked a lot better last night on GEM, much better than the utter crap normally shown on the SD channel.

I thought it looked ok, but not quite as good as during those 10 minute HD sessions of the tests. Sounded good - noticed the echo off the bat more.
