I do when the Eagles are on and I'm stuck in an area where there is no FTA coverage as they are normally twilight games on a Sunday $5 is cheap for a 3 hr game and I assume if Telstra paid $153M for the rights a lot of people must be watching on their phones/tablet?
cheers laurie

I suppose.

I'm in the minority as usual, I'd rather listen on the radio than watch on a friggin phone if I cant watch on a big telly!

God there are some muppets on here. The AFL isn't going to make 7 broadcast matches in HD. It would mean they would get less money for the rights next time. Currently the main channel gets substantially more advertising dollars then the secondary channels. For 7 to broadcast in HD they would have to show the match on the main channel (SD) and the HD channel. Ratings would be almost identical to what they are now, HOWEVER currently they show something else on the HD channel when the AFL is on so they get some advertising revenue from this.

Broadcasting in HD would cost them the extra advertising revenue, thats why they don't do it. They couldn't give a crap if people want to watch in HD as it doesn't effect their bottom line. Until a time that they aren't commercially disadvantaged by showing the game in HD they won't. The government is to blame the HD channel should have been legislated as the main channel (simulcast with the analogue channel), this mistake has cost a lot of sports fans the opportunity to watch HD sport. ie AFL, NRL and Cricket.

The "main" channel is going to be the HD channel from next year (maybe 2014, not sure!) isnt it?

Wonder if they'll do HD then?

Possibly after the analogue shut-down 31 Dec 2013.  Nothing confirmed yet, though.

But considering that Foxtel make $10 more per customer to go HD and the huge amount Foxtel pay for the rights, making 7 produce a HD feed of the games for Foxtel is certainly something that is in the AFL's interest. It's not about Seven showing it on Seven in HD - it is about Foxtel's investment in the rights and their return on them, which means Foxtel showing games in HD to get more subscribers to pay for the privilege.

From the AFL's direct perspective HD is useful for the tribunal making decisions - a HD source means better footage of things that can greatly impact the result of games. HD doesn't just benefit the broadcast.

Most of us gave up on 7 doing HD a long time ago; the issue is that a lot people subscribed to Foxtel/Austar hoping for HD coverage of premium games as claimed in their advertising.

We know that the outside broadcast company captures the game in HD so is it really all that difficult or expensive for Foxtel to take this feed directly prior to distribution to 7 to downscale for its standard definition service?

It's not in 7's interest though, why should they give Fox a leg up?  And if the idiots at the AFL didn't stipulate "all games must be filmed in HD" why should 7 roll over?

I'm not sticking up for 7, I just think it's the AFL's incompetence that has caused this

Did anyone else notice that the Channel 7 produced Giants v Essendon game was broadcast in native HD on FoxFooty HD ?

It seems to be a once off though, as the other Channel 7 produced games on FoxFooty HD have all been in upscaled SD.

Gws vs essendon definately wasn't broadcast on fox footy in native hd, it was upscaled sd like all the others, it was just a better picture than most of the seven produced games.

No way was it native hd though

Once again we get a "it was in HD" followed by a "no it wasn't".

Be sure of it please!

(You're getting my hopes up before destroying them...).

West Coast v Freo was in native HD. Great to see my boys thumping Freo the way it should be.

You sure. I wouldnt think they would do HD in the northern states and give the southern "afl" states SD on 7

As an Essendon supporter I think he is a friggin moron and a waste of space... the old Freo would have put up a much better fight and not let the Eagles win by much (or maybe have even beaten them) meaning that WE would have been on top of the ladder...

but no... Ross Lyon and his boring game plan...

I don't know how people get confused, its very easy to tell when the graphics are HD (nice and smooth) and SD when they aren't.

Yep, in Adelaide here we got the Ade V Coll game from Fox on 7 live (may have been a slight delay?) and a replay of the Ess V GWS game after midnight on 7mate.

Edit; I'm not positive it was HD, but it looked better than usual, BUT I was watching on a little TV in the bedroom, didnt check it on the big one!

I will never ever complain about Seven pq! after watching the WCE v Dockers through Telstra mobile due to being in an area where there was no fta coverage, there are no words to describe the experience, although in the end it was better than radio but just only ,totally disappointed with bandwidth and bitrate strange though the ads on Foxtel were ok just the AFL was bad but it was $5 which is not too bad for 3hrs

cheers laurie

This might just all be a prt of my imagination but I have noticed that the PQ of HD seems to depend on the light. What I mean is, the best PQ seems to be from the sports that are held outside on a lovely clear sunny day (golf, some NFL). When it get to night games they are not as good as there is less natural light. But small grounds with intense lighting (baseball) looks better than a large ground with focussed lighting (MCG) which in turn is way better than Etihad Stadium which has diffussed lighting all around the ground.

So I'm just wondering if the ESS v GWS game looked to have better PQ because it was at a brand new stadium which is small and had the latest lighting technology.
