Got a call from Foxtel during the week, & I had to explain why I wasn't signing up. He didn't know about the 4 upscaled games.......

So you've gone from at least 4 HD games a week to Zero.. that'll show em!

Wouldn't that be 5?

Anyway, good on people like Ralfi for holding out till its all in HD otherwise things would never change.

My decision to not sign up is influenced more by the lack of HD games involving my own team, rather than the quantity of HD games I couldn't care so much about (without my team playing).

If I'm paying a premium for HDTV, I expect to watch the games that matter to me in HD......it's my choice, & right now, it's not costing me anything....

Thanks, SLE355.

I'm just saying that 1 less viewer means squat to Foxtel, and you now have NO HD games at all.

But it's your money, spend it however you wish.

Recently, Channel Ten moved their F1 telecast from OneHD to TenSD.

They even delayed the coverage in WA/SA/NT.

After a mass public outcry (via an online petition), Channel Ten reneged, & now show the races live & in HD to WA/SA/(not sure about NT).

The more people say something, the more chance people will listen.

Yes but it's not Foxtel that are causing this kerfuffle.. it's obstinance on the part of Seven.

I notice they aren't going with the 'live in HD' banner/flag thing on the ads for the ch 7 games any more

Good story, but not quite true

It had nothing to do with the public outcry, and more to do with the sponsors of the telecast who threatened to pull their advertising dollars when they found out the races werent live as they were promised

Some of the people who made the sponsors aware of the changes were those who started the online petition - & who also urged people signing the petition to make the sponsors aware.

So they played a part.

AFL Chief Operating Officer Gillon McLachlan sent me an email today in response to an email I wrote directly to him this morning.

In my 500 word email I expressed my congratulations to the AFL for the things which I thought the new TV broadcast deal did well including: live games, no ads siren-to-siren and 5 games per week in native HD.

I also expressed the AFL fan sentiment that poor quality upscaled SD vision is detrimental to the AFL code and all games should be in native HD to be on par with other sporting codes.

Gill's email reply was simply:

" ...

Josh

Thanks for your email, and understand all the issues

We continue to work on getting all games broadcast in HD, though it may take a while!!

Cheers

Gill

You could always wait until the 2014 season when CH7 will finally be forced to show games in HD as HD will finally become the primary channel!!

No broadcaster can be FORCED to show content in HD unless the content holder has requested HD into the contract, if left open they can do it in 480i if they choose to,but one would think there will be no more excuses to not do it in HD

Good on you Josh - we need more people like you to get this mess sorted.  Do you have McLaughlin's email address.

Footnote:  On Friday evening, Coll v Geel (GF replay and premium rating game) - yet no HD coverage, even for those who are willing to pay - Pathetic 7.

Thanks and I agree that we need more people contacting the AFL, Channel 7 & Foxtel to show that there are many AFL fans who want AFL in native HD.

Gill's afl.com.au email address is easily found via a Google search.

It is a joke.  Especially when Channel 7 are using HD cameras and HD outside broadcast equipment but then only giving Foxtel a SD feed !

The AFL can't do anything about it, they can't force 7 do broadcast in HD its not in the contract.

When the AFL are given their mandatory copy of each match for their archives/vault from ch7 are they getting an SD or HD version?
What about Name a game? What version are they producing?
What a farce...

The fire should be turned on Seven, not the (honest) AFL exec or Foxtel.

I agree that Channel 7 needs the biggest whack.

However, the AFL and Foxtel cannot claim ignorance.

The AFL made this statement on 28 April 2011: "All matches on Foxtel will be ... shown in high definition." http://www.afl.com.a...60/default.aspx

Also the AFL web site still falsely claims that "FOX FOOTY will be home to LIVE coverage of EVERY GAME ... in stunning HIGH DEFINITION." http://www.afl.com.a...27/default.aspx

This is the same marketing message which Foxtel promoted for months leading up to the start of the season.

If there was no contract for Channel 7 to provide a HD feed to Foxtel, then were these statements misleading and deceptive?

Foxtel has removed most of this language from their web site, which may be related to ACCC complaints received from unhappy AFL fans.

Yes peter, trying to get it done

Gill,

I am an AFL follower living in Cairns and continue to be dismayed by the lack of HD coverage of premium games on Foxtel/Austar.  Once again as we approach a blockbuster replay of last year’s grand final, viewers are yet again confronted by a sub-standard upscaled broadcast of channel 7’s standard definition allocated game.  I understand that the AFL is attempting to rectify this issue so Austar customers like myself who believed in good faith, that our subscription would provide native HD broadcasts of all games, can actually get what we paid for.

Can you advise please.

Piss poor reply.......again!

When and what are they doing to "get it done"?

Maybe in the next contract in 4.5 years time they will "get it done" and not just take all the money and leave the broadcaster to just do as they like?

It is damaging the AFL brand IMHO. Seems they went off their tits at Optus for replaying the games via mobile phones and internet, but couldn't give a stuff about the HD issue. Seriously, who watches sport on a phone anyway?

You really think if there is a commercial in confidence discussion going on right now that:
A) he is going to tell a person in an email
B) is going to tell someone knowing damn well that whatever he says will end up on the internet?

When I used to work for Fox, we used to monitor (and I wouldnt be surprised if they still do) this website. One day, my managers details were published on this forum by another user and I had to email an admin to get it removed before people here started calling her and emailing her directly

So lets be honest, what did you really expect his reply to be?

I do when the Eagles are on and I'm stuck in an area where there is no FTA coverage as they are normally twilight games on a Sunday $5 is cheap for a 3 hr game and I assume if Telstra paid $153M for the rights a lot of people must be watching on their phones/tablet?
