Agree with you - but have a look at a lower resolution screen in a plasma. I recenly purchased a cut price cheappie (LG 42" 1024 x 766) which doesn't attempt to upscale the crappy compressed MPEG 2 FTA services and it produces a really smooth watchable picture on just about everthing. Even Austar's standard def (MPEG 2) channels produce a good result. By comparison, the 51" Samsung FHD in the lounge doesn't like the compressed stuff - comes out full of artifacts, noise and other distortions.

You do realise your cheapie LG is upscaling SD fta/austar and dvd's while downscaling blu ray and native HD from fta & austar.

Yep - its in the spare room - only hooked up to FTA. Its adequate with HD stuff without being spectacular. The way HD's going in Australia the downscaling wont be an issue for too much longer.

And I reckon the upscaled matches look BETTER viewed through component than through HDMI.
(and of course native HD matches look better on HDMI).
Don't know why, but I'm thinking component 'softens' the upscaling effect - whereas HDMI is possibly magnifying it by comparison.
Hope this is of some use to those despairing over the quality of upscaled broadcasts (which I agree isn't great).
And I should add my Denon receiver just 'passes through' HDMI (it doesn't have any picture processing capabilities)
And that, FOXTEL HD via component still looks much better than the blocky mess that exists for AFL on 7mate (Prime7) here in NSW.

Connolly's not the only one running this line - tried to get a journo from Fairfax interested a while ago but he claimed that people who want HD coverage " are just a bunch of precious sooks who will never be satisified with anything". There might be some truth to this argument if 7 provided a decent standard definition picture instead of the blury mess they're putting out at the moment.

South Korea have mandated that all broadcast television is to be delivered in HD (DVB S2) by 2015. Understand Taiwan may be doing same. Australia developed country?................we live in the backwoods!

I recently found that using an external scaler improved Foxtel quite a bit. I think the scaler in the IQ2 is not so good. Try changing your IQ to use native res and see if you TV or Denon does a better job.

The way that cat craps on, you would think 7 have been broadcasting for just this season.........they have done it for 40 years!!!!
I reckon it was better 40 years ago.

Sadly, it means nothing to Se7en. Which is why it needs to be made to mean something to Foxtel.........make PayTV feel like they're the ones suffering by missing out on subscribers/losing existing customers, due to the impact of Se7ens' ignorance.
Something surely has to come about from their talks soon enough.....it's been a while since Dementreou urged the two parties to come together..

yep I listen to SEN the Melbourne sports radio station and it seems the media in Melbourne are totally missing the HD question, which was the main reason the Age article attacked Seven, then personalities got involved attacking each other

Is Channel 7 using HD or SD outside broadcast trucks for their AFL production?
Channel 7's equipment provider (Gearhouse Broadcast) has 4 HD trucks and 2 SD trucks according to this page: http://www.gearhouse...side-broadcast/
Any industry insiders care to make a comment?

So Channel 7 use both HD and SD trucks and they could send a HD feed to Foxtel for some games but not all of them.
Is there any way of finding out which games have the HD trucks and which have the SD trucks ?
