Just got a new one.

First complaint I have is that there is no "last channel" button, also known as a "jump" button  or a "recall" button.

Strangely, the US version of the exact same model does have the button (see an illustration here).

If I'd known that Aussie buyers were being dudded like this, with one of the most frequently used buttons omitted from the remote, I would not have bought the unit.

Oddly enough, while this essential button is missing, there are completely inessential buttons like one for switching between analogue and digital (I'll never use it) and another for looking up information about "the music currently playing" (not even sure what this means, the manual is so sh*t).

Kinda sorry I bought it now ...

Mate I was looking at buying one of these for the Mrs.  Last channel button I have never really used before and I know my remote fairly well so I would channel up/down or enter the no manual.  But I could see that if you were used to the feature and were looking forward to having it you would be disappointed.

I believe that from what I have read, the music you are currently listening to works by using the Qriosity service and can find music from films etc, download the album art and give you the title and artist etc just like Shazaam type thing, all via the ethernet connection/internet.  Not 100% of the ins and outs but.

Disappointed for you that you have regrets mate.

Can you tell me though whether you are happy with the PQ of the set though?

PQ is great.

Another gripe is the Sony MediaRemote iPhone app, which allows you to control the TV via an app on the iPhone that looks like a remote control.

Missing lots of buttons (eg the Jump button) and apparently forces ads down your throat (not sure if it does that here in Oz too).

Another complaint: there is no way, it seems, to set up a list of favorite channels and be able to flip through only those channels when using the channel changer on the remote. I have had to permanently delete all the channels I don't want to scroll through. The Sony's favorite list only applies to the EPG and does not affect the channel changer buttons.

Oddly, I have been able to set up a list of favourites that is used by the channel buttons on all my previous TVs, including a Samsung and other brands.

Sony seems to have got some basic things wrong with this set.

I also need to add that the much-vaunted features of the set (networking, skype, 3D) all require the purchase of additional expensive Sony hardware (USB network card, webcam, glasses).

And did I mention that the Sony iPhone remote media app, which is essentially a remote control app for the TV on your iPhone, is riddled with advertisements?

Wow! Unhappy customers, or what?

I got mine today (paid AU$87 incl shipping on eBay) and it works ok except it cannot connect to my home network (Windows 7).


Edit: got it working with Windows 7 after some fiddling with the network settings.

Remote Media now working ok, except for all the ads.

I notice the specifications for the KDL46ex720 include DLNA and an ethernet connection at the rear.
Presumably a wired connection can be made to a home network via the ethernet connector....
Can the tv then be used to access mpg files on a DLNA server connected to the same network?
Anyone had success in doing this?
Advice would be appreciated.

I am planning to do just this mate - stay tuned.  I am under the impression that you can hardwire in the back and stream content to the device in some way.

Delivery is about 2 wks off so I will let you know if no response beforehand.  The 40 is for the Mrs and all she will worry about is the PQ and if she can watch her crappy network shows!

DLNA is a major joke, we have discussed this in another thread about how the 'standard' is not really 'standard' across the board.  Another place for this......

Will let you know what I think when the set is up and running.

I've had the 40EX720 for about 3 weeks now, and bought my grandfather the same too. Both very happy with them - no server setup or anything, but accessing youtube & iview beautifully via the dongle. Pity the "Good Guys" weren't overly upfront about needing to purchase that separately, but I'll recover...
