If only the firmware was smart enough to display the Volume name . . . would make life so much simpler

I still haven't been able to get the wireless working though. The dongle seems to be ok; it sees the broadcast SSID for the home network. My router is a Billion 7404VGP, wireless is configured as WEP64 open system. The pass key is Key 1 and I'm using 10 hex digits.
I have factory defaulted the unit and am running the latest released firmware (5.08). I'm also certain that the passphrase is entered correctly. When I try to connect I see the light on the dongle flashing but after a few minutes I get a failed to connect message. The signal is about 3 bars...
Appreciate if WKLIE can comment on this setup or a path forward. Thanks
oh BTW it may help others, I did find that my unit shipped with "non-default" settings. ie defaulting the box, changed quite a few settings to what I received out of the box from Jungle jumble.

Or you could add a static address from System>Network. you would need to input Subnet mask Gateway address and DNS Address. You get these from the network info in your router. Check out Page 68 of the manual
One other thing make sure your security password is entered correctly i.e. letters can be Capitals or lower case.
I know from experience it is dead easy to put the wrong case for the letters.

Use WPA if possible. Magic TV support for WPA is better than for WEP.
If possible, try to experiment with moving the Magic TV and/or the WiFi router such that they are in a direct line of sight without obstacles or even walls.

So, I looking at switching to the codes for the MCE remote instead. I seem to recall someone recently located one of these remotes at a very good price & it worked like a charm. Anyone know the best source of one of these MCE remotes cheaper than the $28 to $32 so far discovered on the net.? I see by Googling that there are actually two different versions of the MCE but I presume the MAGIC uses the later version - correct? A heap of the different remotes is shown at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MCE_Remote
Not urgent but I guess I should move in the direction of MCE.

I'm finding this to be a problem now I've upgraded to a Panasonic plasma. Some of the reds look very maroon or pink, and nothing like real reds. The easiest way to spot it was with the Ferrari cars on the F1 coverage (aside from the pinkish faces). If I use the TVs tuner then everything looks normal colour wise. But through the Magic the reds look terrible. Changing the from RGB to the other option as suggested before made no difference, I ended up having to change from THX mode to Proffessional 1 and set higher red colours manually.
It's a shame because I think this PVR is fantastic and probably the only remotely negative thing I could say about it.

I found this at first. Easy fix,. Go into MENU VIDEO and alter Image mode or in Advanced settings alter the HDMI color space setting until you see a picture colour what you like. It might be a case of also changing the Color/video setting on your TV.

I PM'd John about this the other day having just set up the Magic I bought some time ago. I also have a Panasonic plasma (older V series) and I tried switching between the "black enhancement" and the HDMI "RGB and the other setting which I can't remember". They didn't seem to make much difference. I ended up changing the colour setting on the tv set up menu. The 3 PVR's (Beyon wiz P1, Panasonic DMR-XW350 and Magic) all look much the same on the screen now.
I really like this PVR, there are things the BW does slightly better, but overall I think the Magic is excellent value for money. Have recomended the unit to a number of friends and they are very happy with it too. Thanks againg to John for getting this whole thing started.

As I mentioned I changed HDMI colour space from from RGB to YCbCr and it's had minimal to no difference. I can live with it, not worth changing colour settings on my TV over, just a little annoying.

TVs out of the box have horrible colour designed to capture your eye in the showroom. I have a Pio Kuro and the picture from the Magic is superb. You may find some time adjusting the colours will reap rewards on all inputs not just the PVR. I use YCbCR and find it to be better but the difference is miniscule.

I think it's Settings -> Timeshift Setup -> Instant Rewind -> Off.

1. see how it behaves with the other remote when it arrives.
2. upgrade from 5,07 to 5.08 (should do this anyway - assuming there is a difference)
3. factory reset, rescan etc
If all that fails then maybe it is faulty and should be returned but I'll try to avoid that.
The power company are plunging us into darkness from 9 until 3 later today so I will not be able to play around with it until later. The outside thermometer says it is 0.8C now so just as well we have a wood heater

I didn't realize that you haven't upgraded to 5.08 yet. Please upgrade it first. I'm hoping that maybe the odd missing recordings you've experienced with 5.07 beta will vanish with this upgrade. If you see any odd problems, please factory reset it.

The main annoyance in my eyes was the i-plate current programme information and mini -EPG which now shows current show information and not the old data.
I have been playing with the editing function to cut out ad breaks in recordings and found it works very well and easy to use.
Not as good a exporting into VideoReDo but still quite acceptable brings movies down to about 1.5hrs instead of 3+ including ads.
For normal shows the skip function is ideal.

I am still on 5.07 beta if I update it to 5.08 will I lose my timer settings? Will it fix my high pitched audio problems with some channels?

To be double sure with unit 2 I did a factory reset so that meant a rescan + reset timers (only needed 5 settings so that was not too hard - the MAGIC is just so easy in this dept) but only did an upgrade on the main unit so all timers etc stayed intact.
Just noted this thread started last July and has generated 44 pages in the last 10 months.

No if you just update to 5.08 timers SHOULD remain untouched. You should really update to the latest stable version as betas tend to have a few bugs. Not sure it will fix your audio problems you will have to do some recordings to see.
If you get any weird problems that don't go away when you power off and reboot then a factory reset may fix it. See Tassie's post above.
Agree with John with regard to problems none have been major and with help from Wklie and 5.08 working like a dream now nothing at all to bitch about no missed timers and all names as per the EPG and the interface is so intuative it is so easy to copy and move files around.

Your settings will be retained in the upgrade (unless you also perform a factory reset after upgrade).
As for the high pitched audio problems, I'd like to ask:
- Which channels have high pitched audio? Which of them do not?
- Does it occur when watching live TV only, or playing back recording programmes only, or both?
- What is the type of audio connection you have? HDMI, analog white/red, optical, or coaxial?
If you are using HDMI audio, please try the analog white/red connection (together with component or composite video), and vice versa.

Thanks just did the upgrade all seems to have gone well still have timers etc. I have had the high pitched audio on recordings on channels win, prime and 7mate and have it connected to my pana plasma via hdmi. I will see if I still have the audio problem after the firmware update and let you know.
