BTW just noticed my WiFi dongle has packed up there is a solid green light on instead of the green flashing and it cannot find my router.

Please put the Magic TV to stand by, then power it off using the rear power switch.  Wait for a moment then power it on again, and see if it behaves the same.

Yep tried that and both USB ports still the same solid green light instead of flashing green.
Not worried about replacing it but thanks to Tassie Devil. Not even sure how long it has been down for as I have only used it to download firmware the Magic Gadgets I can live without.

Not sure why  the need for the 5.07 firmware.I still have the 5.05 and everything appears to be working fine. What was the exact problem?

The biggie is timer recordings during the daylight saving transitions. They all start an hour out after the transition.

I've been reading this thread over the past week or so, hoping to find a replacement for my ageing and increasingly troublesome HTPC. This unit looks perfect to replace the PVR function of my media centre box, with the lack of a true series record being the one thing that's holding me back. That and the fact that I checked Crazy Stu this morning and the unit went UP $50 in price over the weekend! :(

Maybe a refurb off eBay will tempt me after all...

I was a little hasty and forgot to check Jungle Jumble - still $299 with free shipping over there!

You can always flash it to the MTV3700 firmware to experiment with Freeview series recording but sacrifice ad skipping.  When you decide that ad skipping is more important than series recording, you can change it back to MTV4000 firmware.

Tassie Devil what was the condition of the refurb from eBay like? Any damage to the case? I am having withdrawals the last couple of days since my teac pvr started playing up and one of these magic's might be a good replacement.

As much as I LOVE the series record on my HTPC, there's no way I'd subject our family to ads! People at work often say "hey, don't you love that hilarious ad with the...." and I just stare blankly and say "I'm not familiar with that one". The only jingles I know are from my childhood :)

If you want series record and ad-skipping, a Topfield with the Auto Scheduler and TMS Timer taps does a pretty good job (apologies in advance for talking about another brand in this thread).

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look at the Toppy - though the price is one helluva good argument for the Magic.

A well known retail store nor far from where I live has the MTV3700TD marked down from $699 (!) to $248. Saw it yesterday. Full  12 month warranty. Very tempting, but reading this thread has made somewhat nervous.

Why are you nervous? The Magic PVR is a solid unit.

Even if he can't stomach the freeview restrictions it can always be loaded with the non-freeview firmware.

Apologies for the slow reply but just back today from a short O/S holiday.

Let me know if you (or anyone else) still interested in it as it is still here.  Probably best to email me off board at:  j_coulsonATbigpond.com.

Cheers

Just back from holidays & catching up with posts.
My refurb unit was supplied with a dead power supply unit which was returned and replaced with no hassle.
The refurbed unit purchased for my friend is 100% - looks like new (as mine did).  No need to be wary of a refurbished unit in my experience.  Why waste dollars opn the same vthing just because it is labelled new?

He visited and took it away but like a goon I omitted to give him the power supply so had to post it the day I left on holidays.

So I've not heard back from him yet but will email him in a minute to find out his experience & post it up here.  However I tested it here for him & it worked perfectly.

I second that thought - why I use two of them.  About the only thing I miss is PIP but never used it much on the Toppy anyway, but it was handy to have.  Apart from that it is far superior to the Toppy 7000 & 7100 I used here & that superiority is in just about every department + it has a heap of extra features,  And at the low price it is selling for it is a steal!!

That's excellent news. I'm looking at the Magic unit for me and the wife, as well as the in-laws. Where are the refurbs available?

EDIT: Nevermind, found Dealspace :)

That is where I bought two refurbished ones - fine to deal with.

I hope I don't sound like trying to sell stuff.  I've heard a tip that suggests the low price of Magic TV won't last for too long.  Anyone who is still hesitating to buy one, make up your mind asap.

Hello
Anyone have any experience with the following unit

Beyonwiz DP-P2 Twin Tuner HD PVR 500GB Recorder (Reconditioned)

I was looking at one of these from this dealspace mob.  I did not see any magic units on the site

cheers
