Unlike football, the camera operators can predict more or less where the action will be, so the 3D is more natural and there is a lot more of it.

"Tennis is well suited for 3D," said David Bush at Sony.
Above quote is from In Depth: Wimbledon in 3D: behind the scenes. Yes very well suited I'm sure; it would be amazing to watch.

And on the same webpage:

Quote

It's not all of Wimbledon that's getting the 3D treatment – the men's semi finals and the men's and women's finals are to be shot in 3D.

...

As for watching Wimbledon in 3D in the home, the BBC is still working out who it should give the content to. At the moment, 15 broadcasters in Europe and the world over are set to take the feed, but we'll have to wait a few weeks to see which, if any channel, will be showing it in the UK.

So will any free to air television network in Australia carry the Wimbledon finals in 3D? [Resulting in the 3D sets Harvey Norman promoted so vigorously and sold last year to be used for watching sport free to air in 3D this year?]

Or will 3D coverage be offered in Australia on cable?

On Blu-ray only, weeks after the event?

Given the fact that tennis lends itself to 3D, and given the popularity of Wimbledon, here is a real opportunity to promote 3D in Australia.

The transmitters used last year for 3D are decommissioned and gone.
Nine days to go, there's very little chance of any 3D transmission here for Wimbledon.

From a purely technical viewpoint, I was thinking of side by side 1920x1080 MPEG-2 from an existing permanent DTV transmitter. But if that were going to be attempted, it would have been publicised by now [and approval already sought from the ACMA].

But from a commercial viewpoint, there's the question of rights to the BBC coverage. I see there's another thread on dtvforum: Wimbledon In 3d, Will fox sports be broadcasting it in 3D ?.

I'm not sure ACMA would need to grant special permission for it to be done on one of the existing MPEG-2 HD services.  People without 3D equipment would still be able to watch it if it was simulcast on either the main SD or alternate SD service as TEN does at time when anti-siphoning or other factors come into play.

Nor was I sure. Perhaps it would be more a case of a television network informing ACMA, as a matter of courtesy, of an intention to broadcast a side-by-side image; with the expectation ACMA would be unable to find any valid reason to object.

The BBC did a good job to judge from this report of viewing the picture in one of the very few Australian cinemas to show the Men's Final live and in 3D:
