Looks like Fox are going to pay a fortune to show 9 games of this rubbish. Austar better not pass on additional costs to subsribers to pay for this seeing most don't watch AFL.

I'd ditch them if they did.

I would be interested to see where you get your figures from to justify this comment.  

With almost 90,000 at the MCG yesterday it seems to me 'on the surface' that AFL has some popularity and therfore many people would probably enjoy it on Austar!

However I do agree with your comment on costs.

Fox Sports will create a new channel called Fox Footy Channel. Austar customers will lose all AFL access for about 6 months, untill they eventually negoiate a deal. No cost will be added on this way.

Every home-and-away match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports through Foxtel (and Austar where applicable), using both subscription television and IPTV (internet protocol television).

Foxtel will also broadcast all finals excluding the Toyota AFL Grand Final, and will re-establish a dedicated AFL channel that will be included in the current sports pack available in Foxtel subscriptions.

The AFL channel will run throughout the duration of each football season.

All matches on Foxtel will be uninterrupted, siren to siren in each quarter, and shown in high definition. The Seven Network is yet to decide if its matches will be shown in HD.

For a sport which is claimed to be not popular on Pay-TV obviously Foxtel are completely deluded. They are setting up a  dedicated AFL channel even though it is not popular according to "duke". Foxtel will soon declare bankruptcy because they have done no market research and paid millions of dollars for a product that nobody watches.
Whoever has made this grievous error will go down in history as the most incompetent TV executive ever. Fancy setting up a dedicated  TV channel and spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a sport which is not popular. Go Figure!

This fairyball crap has the highest attendance out of any national sports league in Australia. FACT! Twist that around any way you want!

The point is that the AFL is the most popular spectator sport in the country so it stands to reason that the Pay-Tv companies will pay a large amount for the rights. So therefore your constant denigration of the sport only proves that you do not like AFL. No problem with that, you are entitled to your opinion. However it also proves that you have no idea about how Pay-TV works. Foxtel (and by extension Austar) are going to leverage this new rights deal to garner more subscribers. If you think this an incorrect strategy then you have the right to withdraw your business.

Popularity. The more popular a sport the more interested the Pay-TV companies are. And the more they will pay for the privilege of showing it. Foxtel is going to have a dedicated AFL channel. That would not happen if the AFL was only of moderate interest.
