I have now watched 3 movies and a few test scenes and that is all I need to provide my impression of these subs.
Let's start at the beginning, nothing really prepares you for just how big these things are. Its kind of like watching basketballers on TV, you know they are tall, but then seeing them in real life; They are really tall. We've all seen the pics, but when first seeing the box for real it hits you, far out this thing is large. Unboxing it doesn't particularly make it any smaller either.
When first bringing mine home, I had decided I was too stuffed to set them up now and would play the next day, about 30 minutes later I had them plugged in at the front corners of my room and was running Audyssey. Resistance is futile!
Plugging them in is all expectation, everybody says how great these are and so "OMG WOW" is the expected first reaction; it wasn't (and actually probably isn't).
I did the usual for the first listen and quickly jumped to bass heavy scenes, waiting for the slab beneath me to crack apart, it didn't. The bass was there, it was good, clean and effortless as so often described. Perhaps a little too effortless I thought as there did not seem to be any weight behind it and figured that as mentioned by others I would need to get used to the different bass. I thought "yeah its good (and it was), but it's probably more different than particularly just better (patience grasshopper),
I changed the PGM SEL on the subs to use the extended profile and tried a few more scenes. As described, I found that there was ever so slightly more bottom end with a very slight loss in some mid bass; it really wasn't that much and I decided to keep it with extended profile, probably because I like the idea of the extra extension more than anything else. 1.30am, time to call it a night, lol.
The next morning I put the first movie on for the kids, being toy story 2, the start was pretty good, and I was rather more impressed than the night before, the rumble was really there and much more than ever before, yeah these are nice.
The other night I got to watch the first real movie I had been saving for the subs arrival, How To Train Your Dragon. WOW, ok these things are a LOT better than first thoughts. The LFE was great, the lounge was vibrating and I was enjoying every single dragon breath and LFE moment like never before. The movie was great and so engrossing with the Submersive delivering an amazing rumble and punch on cue. It was at the end of this movie that I made a comment to the GLW that I think we need another 2 in the back corners, which typically any such suggestion would be greeted with looks of scorn, to my astonishment received a look, but no objection. (evil laugh)
An observation I had during this and since, was that my speakers actually seem to have opened up more with new subs, and produce greater sound and detail. It's strange, it's almost like they were being held back by the old sub. Very strange, but a very pleasant side effect.
The next movie I had been holding out for and watched was Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, far out, what the subs do with this movie is fricking awesome. When the gods walk, the ground literally shakes and I could actually imagine the slab cracking beneath my feet, this is what its about, truly awesome LFE in all the right places. I love these things. Any one with a Submersive needs to check this movie out.
Last night I watched Flight of The Phoenix, I'd heard a lot about the crash scene and was really holding out for the subs before watching this movie(like the others). Well, the crash scene was a religious experience, and to quote from another movie "holy sweet Mary, mother of Jesus" it was insane, **** was vibrating, my 2 little kids who were playing on the floor, jumped up and ran and jumped into my lap, the lounge was vibrating like it was one of the seats on the plane and when the prop hit the side of the plane, the handles in the doors at the back of my room were rattling, that had never happened before and just added to the overall experience. For the first time ever I was actually concerned about my neighbours because of how long this scene is and the volume being delivered! Dam, this is so sweet, amazing, awesome, <insert own adjective, they all apply>
These subs just deliver so much, so well, to the point where I am now feeling I have to be selective of when to watch a movie, which I have never been before. I refuse to watch movies quietly, there is just no point, and these subs only encourage that affliction.
OMG, WOW!
EDIT
I think I want to add that the "Demo Scenes" don't do these subs justice.
Yes they are loud and impressive, but there is none of the emotion attached that these subs deliver on when the same scene occurs while watching the movie.
Playing a loud screaming vocal, or a huge distorted guitar rift on its own can be impressive for a speaker, but without the surrounding song, its just a noise, you need the whole to appreciate the part.
Same with subs, especially these.
