Now doing trial broadcasts with full launch expected in the second quarter of 2011 with a satellite version ("Saorsat") launching soon afterwards:
Saorview/Freeview Ireland
Saorview DTT will be using DVB-T with MPEG4 coding (just like NZ) while Saorsat will be using DVB-S2

Minimum Specifications
I notice the receiver must be able to display 1920 x 1080 p/50 frame/s
Its a pity they did not specify DVB-T2 to cope with Full HD @ 50 frame/s.
They have specified the latest audio and video compression, along with MHEG-5 middleware.
Peter,
You miss the fact that there will be no analog TV broadcasts in the whole of the EU's 520 million people. after the end of 2012.

Well no. No they haven't. What has been specified?
Video:
MPEG-4 AVC
MPEG-2
Audio:
MPEG1 L2
AC3
HEAAC
These are not the 'latest' in the video and audio arena, but they are what is supported by today's decoders.

The specifications for Saorview were finalised well before even the draft DVB-T2 spec was released as the Irish DTT system was supposed to have been launched back in 2008/9 as an FTA/Subscription hybrid (like Boxer in Sweden and the original UK OnDigital) but after the pay-TV consortium that was supposed to run it pulled out at the last minute, the DTT launch was postponed and revamped to the present all-FTA Saorview

Here's Saorview's initial official channel lineup: Saorview Television Channels and Services
Not much compared to the UK's Freeview, but more channels would probably be added after analogue switch off in 2012
