Hi Al/Everyone , yeah got back to the dark side 2 months ago.Heard lots of speakers and settled on Wilson Benesch.

Man turntables today aint like the crappy ones we had as kids which used sewing needles. That PVA glue trick didnt work for me - i think the odd crackle I heard  was static build up.
Getting up off the sofa to turn the record over sure is a drag

very nice will, you should do a bit of an expose on the system when get a chance, looks very interesting and be quite a few I'm sure interested to hear more about it all

i just noticed something: I had 5 new records delivered  and i cleaned 4 on a record cleaning machine

the one i didnt clean sounded the best: no crackle

From now on i'm not cleaning any of my new vinyl with anything other than the stylus

its amazing how good modern CD's sound compared to the ones from the early 80's. Vinyl does have a special something about it.
I think each format can sound great and has their pros and cons. AL, id rather spare you guys the audiophile descriptors regarding the immediacy of the treble , imaging and so forth  from good equipment compared to the crap we grew up with as kids

Interesting re the effect of cleaning,

I just use an anti static brush myself, which seems to get rid of any surface dust and static which is usually source of any cracle and pops. but then most of my records either owned myself since new or pretty much new anyways. Or mint condition second hand. I think if have some real old grungy records, record cleaning probably helps. But not a path ventured myself.

I wonder if in cleaning it's actually building up static ir something that's not helping the situation ?

Wish could hear your system will, looks lovely and a very interesting mix, not heard any of those components, and wow been a long time since seen a luxman anything !

There was a guy on the Linn forums who theorised that if a small peice of grit /dust became entrapped on the felt pads of the record cleaning machine as it spins it would permamnently damage the grooves. Hes abandoned his cleaning of new vinyl and so have I. Also i was using distilled water you buy at the supermarket which apprently can still have impurities . Some hard core guys recommend distilled water procured from laboratory supply shops. Yes static was probably the source of my crackles (doh!) so wont go near a record cleaning machine for new vinyl again . Ill stick with the carbon fibre brush   which works great

There was a time when Mcintosh and Luxman were bought out by Clarion and Alpine and the quality went down the gurgler. The new Luxman CD/SACD players out of japan are great though; as good if not better than accuphase/esoteric and DCS

Some interesting findings re record cleaning. Always good to hear some real world feedback on these things.

Good to hear luxman is back strong with some good stuff there! I remember back in the 80s drooling over some of their stuff as all could afford to do hehe. Alpine clarion used to make some really nice stuff too at one stage in car audio, looking more recently just plain rubbish ! Looks like gone to the dogs !

Will, played a couple of brand new records, burt Bacharach casino royale, and Willie Nelson stardust, both beautiful records, from classic records and a whisper clean sound - not a crackle or pop or background noise.

Only gave em a quick wipe with the carbon fibre anti static brush as well, so definitely a good result possible just using that for dust and static

Good God , Elvis has never sounded like this. Astonishing, clean , no noise, like it was recorded yesterday

2. amy winehouse

UK pressing , better sound than the US pressing i had (and the US pressing was sh*t in terms of scratches at the factory!). Ive heard the Uk and Japan take better care when making their records

3. Mobile Fidelity's Frank Sinatra;

Sinatra  usually sounds like he's reading a script in his studio recordings but Live he has more emotion . These recordings are ultra clean , low noise and phenomenal soundstage

4. The Gladiator Soundtrack

2 LPs and leaves the CD version for dead

5. Johnny Cash : The Man Comes Around

Wow , like Cash is in the room . American pressing so one slight imperfection (inaudible though) . The whole room resonates with his voice.

one Gladiator LP had a slight warp and id love to hear what experiences people have had with outer rim stainless steel stabilisers

It's an incredible performance

The peggy lee track in casino royale is a real time warp back, and love the willie nelson lp, and for the same reasons I think as the johny cash resonates with you. I must get hold of the cash lp, one have wanted to get for a while. your a sinatra fan too hey ? really sounds great on vinyl that stuff

I'm not so sure about using a brush, I bought one recently but it just seems to push the dust around the record leaving a line of dust.

I've heard good things about them and can see the advantage, though they are pretty expensive. What you could maybe do is figure out the dimensions needed, then get a local metalworker to fabricate you one.

Yes those outer rings are expensive but can do wonders : jerome has 2 videos - one with and one without the clamp. Sonically my warp i dont notice but fark the tonearm rides like a rollercoaster !

thanks will, I do actually have the sacd already one of my favs, keen to see how its on vinyl, I think its the kind of stuff that suits the medium. I do actually have an older version picked up at some op shop or sale or something ages ago and that was terrible on vinyl. anyways lets see what this classic records pressing is like

turned up in the post today ! both originals out of print,

the first one would only get away with a cover like that in 1977 ! hehe,
a beaut album, the sax playing of gil ventura, accompanied by his orchestra is just some beautifull music. I couldnt believe I found this one. Its a record my parents have but that is very rough playing. this one I got is mint, from emi italy and sounds pristine !

the beth orton disc rarely come up and in good nick. with this one the cover is just ok, the discs are not mint but plays good thank goodness with just a touch of scratchiness ocassionaly. The music just sublime, A two disc set, and enjoyed every track have listened to

Being out of print very hard to get them gutty, and yeah why silly prices, the last one I saw going on eBay went for 60 something us dollars for test pressing !  

Mine I got through discogs 19gbp shipped. Came via uk airmail which was worried about, but was fine got here within the week and unscathed !  

Few more there, but yeah a bit on the exy side would want them mint for that kinda money !
