I'll continue the Panny 42" theme.

Mine is TH-42PZ80A. Purchased Dec 2008. Almost 2y.o. Not a single issue, except I wish it was bigger! Haha... don't we all...

My 46" toshiba plasma which cost 8k -- from castel but they went bankrupt about 1 or 2 years after i bought it.
8 years old 1080i and the picture quality is amazing on it (esp the flesh tones) and still goin strong!
I would compare it to todays plasma's or lcd's as up there with the best!

It accepts 1080i video input, that does NOT make it a 1080i TV.

April 2003 LG 42" SD plasma.  $7000 without a digital tuner or speakers.  LG were mostly rubbished on these forums at the time but it's never missed a beat.  Connected to STB by VGA and to a Powerbook by DVI for most of it's life.  Religated to bedroom status by a Panasonic 50V10 in January 2010, and enjoying it's well earned retirement.

...with good reason i may add but glad to hear you've had no problems, their Plasmas from around that era seem OK and didn't seem to have the PSU & Board problems of some of the later  models.

So does every other Plasma made for the last 10 years, again that does not make them 1080i TV's. They accept and display 1080i video, that's not the same thing at all.
The only true 1080i TV is CRT.

The only panel that was sort of interlaced was a Hitachi from 2007-2008 from memory.

An 8 year only 46” is almost certainty 480p, not much else exited back then.

doesnt it display 480p, 768p or 1080p, regardless of what it accepts?

i have a 42" 768 Conia, bought from CoTD for $650 a little over 2 years ago. Still going strong, pretty decent PQ i think (compared to my in-laws new LCD anyway), though it does have a dead pixel.

hoping it dies a month before the extended warranty expires ;) otherwise upgrade will still be several years off according to the missus :(

6 yo Samsung 42" plasma, not HD, but still has good pic quality, only let down is a couple of 'burn in bars' from newer movies shown in 21:9 ratio...

Same TV here, being used in the kids rumpus room with a HD set top box to HDMI, a softmodded Wii to component, a WTDV mini, sound via Logitec Z5500 5.1 - kids love it !!! I sometimes watch the F1 on One HD in there LOL....

My 106cm Panny TH42PX70A is going on 4 years old and hasn't missed a beat.

My 50 inch version of same tv (3 year old) still going strong and has never missed a beat - glad I got the 50....

Oh, and the matt black finish on these sets sure beats the pants of the distracting bllack piano finishes that seem so prevalent these days....

The 42" Sammy I gave my daughter and son in law as wedding gift is just on 7 years old, has couple dead pixels that's all, mine packed up within a year (both bought at same time).

Ditto - my 42inch black fuji (SD) is over 6 yrs old and still going strong.
Only problem is that with no speakers and no TV tuner, to just watch TV requires the fuji on, the set-top box on, and the amp on - so it all chews up alot of juice.
Argument enough to warrant an upgrade, however I sometimes wish it would pack up...

Have a Panasonic TH-42PA50A plasma which will be 6 years old next month. Only 480p and no tuner but still going like a solid workhorse. Blacks are great - haven't adjusted contrast in years - but it has never been good with motion blur and solarisation.

Also have a Panasonic TX-32LXD600A LCD which is about 4 years old and is as good as new (meaning ordinary blacks and smearing).

Really want to upgrade to 58" but can't justify giving up on these 2 working units, particularly when I have a projector as well.

Panasonic P58VT20A....ummm...4 days and loving it ;)
(but I came from an old Panasonic 68cm....which hasn't missed a beat.  Hate the thought of chucking it out for something that aint broken, but have nowhere else to use it).
The longevity of todays Plasmas is something I'm interested in.   Didn't buy the stores ext warranty, in fact never have bought any ext warranty before...so still tossing up whether to fork out the $289 for the Panasonic ext warranty... Having invested $3k in this panel, I'd like it to last at least 5 years, if not alot more.

Hi,

My LG 42" plasma is 6.5 years. Bought it for $5k as a present to myself for getting my first job  :)

Recently decided to buy a Panasonic P50VT20A!

If or when anyone here decides to upgrade, how will you be disposing of your old flat panel TV?

Do you think anyone would be interested in buying if you posted on something like ebay/gumtree?

bought first 37" in 2005 and had multiple tvs since then, now only have a projector as sick of all the upgrading i kept doing to have the latest tv's and wasting money haha.

and i saw a comment about a dude who's friends dad had a 60k 42" . that is crazy haha

i was in kuala lumpur, in the Sogo store around 96/97 and they had a 42" plasma in the centre of the store hooked up to a dvd player which was the latest from japan at the time and you could buy it for 40 or 50k ringgit, which was like 20k AU$ at the time

My Panasonic TH-P50Z800A plasma just recently developed a display fault, a column of 1080 pixels one pixel wide forming a vertical line that appears and disappears depending on what is being displayed on screen. The 'green' sub-pixels of this column are latched 'on' and are clearly visible when the surrounding pixels are of reddish or bluish tint.

I've owned this panel for 26 months now and there's not a fingerprint on it, just an indication of how well I have looked after this unit, still it went faulty. It was to go in for repair tomorrow but with the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing here QLD it'll have to wait another week.

Fortunately I took out an extended 4 year warranty at $429 which covers all costs, and at roughly $2 a week that is not much of an outlay for an ongoing peace of mind. I have sometimes pondered whether there is some degree of 'designed obsolescence' that goes on in this industry in order to generate future repairs and possible sales of new panels by these corporate giants. But then, that's me.

Conspiracy theory or not it is wise to take out an extended warranty on these expensive, fragile displays if only for the sake of covering all possibilities that may or may not happen.
