I know in the past there have the SD STB and DVD all in one combo units. Just wondering if you can purchase HD STB and DVD player in the one unit?

you'll probably see a HD STB/Blu-Ray combo player soon, the manufacturer that makes a lot of the cheaper Blu-Ray players in the market has just announced one, available from next month

If you want to record, why not just get a PVR?

I just thought others might be looking for something similiar. I picked up just such a box from KMart last weekend for an elderly relative in a nursing home. It is just a simple DVD player and HD STB in one ! My relative had a dvd player but was missing out on the extra "I love Lucy" re-runs on Go or 72 :) . Her small CRT tv only had a single AV input on the back.

The OP was only after a DVD player and this would have done the job. It's an AWA badged unit and they were selling for $99. It tuned in easily and I was able to delete the duplicate channels and move them so they were in some sort of logical order for an elderly lady !

The EPG was especially easy to display and read. It is also labeled PVR ready and has a USB port for the connection of a external HDD. I didn't bother trying to explain that at this stage. I'll save it for another weekend visit.

So far so good.

Yes but as DVD recorders. Here are 3 options from Sony and Panasonic. http://www.jbhifi.co...s/dvd-recorder/

Although it is a shame they don't do a cheaper version without the hard drive. :(  I'd buy one if they did.

It's a lot better with a hard drive (Except for the price).
I occasionally use an elderly Samsung  with hard drive and DVD recorder. I coppy to the hard drive and then burn from that.
When I tried a plain burn instead,. I found I was getting quite a few coasters.
