[Dissociative]

as above, having a hard time nailing down exactly which player was first here (I believe it was sometime in 1999), thought someone here may know off the top of their head?

Dis,
i dont know what the first DVD player was.
But i had a Philips it cost me $1200    way back when.
Maybe a Philips was the first?????

I went to a market research evening in mid 98, I think.

They showed us a "dvd" - it was a warner bros title, just can't remember which one. They explained what it was, but they didn't have a player to demonstrate it!

yeah I think it was Phillips

It was a Toshiba - I bought one in 1997 from memory and it cost me $1549

Wasn't an import was it? First in the world was the toshiba sd3000, which came out in japan in 1997. According to wiki, we didn't get DVD players here until 1999.


Thanks for the lead on the Philips, any idea what the model was?

It was the Toshiba SDK-310. I still have one. I drove from Newcastle down to Sydney in 98 to buy it for $1k. The Pioneer 505 was released shortly after.

I'm pretty sure the 1st DVD shown was Eraser

My 1st DVD player was a Toshiba SD-9000.  A steal at $2k back then circa 1999/2000

I think that was my first one too, a great player that was too, still going strong last time I checked AND it was region free, a rarity when I got it

My first DVD player was a Sony DVP-S725D bought in June 1999 for $1230 (modified for region free). A fantastic player that works perfectly although not in use currently.

Also my first player, bought about the same time for a similar price with region free mod. Yes a fantastic player, not the first available here but the first decent one for sure. Resume play, bookmarks and 200 disk memory, you don't even get these sorts of features now. Mine is still in use in a bedroom system.

I too think it was a Toshiba. A got a later model (1200?) which I sold a couple years ago. Still went well.

Yeah i think it was Toshiba in 1998 In Sydney,Wicki may be slightly wrong, but i think the RRP. was around $2000.In any case the specialist Hi-Fi shops had the USA players here very early in the piece,if it wasn't late 1997 then it was early 1998.My Brother purchased one of the first Pioneer players in 1999 but the lip-sync error when reading the disc was terrible,i waited until early 2000 and purchased the Pioneer DV-525 which was(one of) the first players under $1000 and had most of the bugs from the first models ironed out. The first DVD's in Oz were the Roadshow ones with MPEG sound.

I have a Conia  DVD player in the bedroom.It does DTS and as a real bonus the copy protection is disabled.
So back then i could copy dvds to VHS .
WOW it was amazing back then
I got it ten or more years ago for $100.

Bought a Toshiba 2108 in late 98 or early 99, i think the 2107 preceded that in Aus.
Still have a sd 5200 ( twin tray )  circa 2001 ish still goes strong.
Both were/are region free--a simple E-prom upgrade.
Roadshow tittles i still have with the M peg sound option are Wild things, Last man standing and Dark city
Very first titles i owned were Dark city Roadshow, and City of angels-- Warner.

The Pioneer 505 was the first Pioneer (Toshi SDK310 was the first retail is OZ). That Pioneer had the lype sync problem, but it did have DTS passthrough with the Toshi didn't).

I also bought a Hiteka DVD player in 2000. It was the first with MP3 playback from CD.

Agreed, I bought one too and was very nearly killed by my ex-wife - luckily several of the free dvd's that came with it where able to placate her!

I paid over $900 for the Pioneer 525 when it came out. Guess what? It still works. I have it in my back room as a backup just incase.

The eject mechanism has some issues but apart from that it works almost as well as it did the day I bought it. By comparison the whateverthef I have in my living room now, which is only a couple of years old, only plays what it feels like when it feels like it. :/
