Myer's got the BW780 / 880 in their latest catalog for $1176 / $1364 , introductory offer. I wonder if these new models have the component video output locked to 576i as per next year's AACS requirements?

Of the "big names" in the Freeview Manufacturer's list, Grundig, Sony and Sanyo, all have Freeview products listed, but none have recorders listed amongst their Freeview products, only TVs (Sanyo and Sony) and an HD STB (Grundig).
There is of course the PS3 add-on recorder - PlayTV which is Freeview certified, though a simple change of country in the menu allows users to export recordings, though limited to <4GB as any external HDD needs to be FAT32 formatted.

Damn. Not listed under Sony on the Freeview page. Daft limitation on copying, though.

this is a bad joke played on Australia by Panasonic.

I've sent a message to their "support" as a complaint. This will be interesting to see if I get a response.

check this out.

Panasonic have clearly dropped the ball when they had a chance to truly capture market share by simply offering a larget hdd capacity (because none of their competitors do) for the cost of only $30 extra per unit - they should reconsider their marketing staff career opportunities.

what a rip off!

if you would like to format something in FAT32 above 4gb - try Google

I realise this, but are you able to use a FAT32 formatted drive that will work on the PS3 and extract files larger than 4GB?

yeah, it seems to work ok for me so far.

I have an old PS3 hdd (40gb) in a usb case that has exchanged files either side of tht size.

Has anyone bought a DMR-BW780 yet?

If so, how much for, where from and first impressions if you can?

I was talking to a chap at the good guys & he said they are on order & expected them in 2 weeks. 780 expected to sell for $1000
but I am sure I read somewhere that you will only be able to play the blu-ray disks in a panasonic.

Earlier models had that issue. Not sure if it has been rectified with FW releases or in the new model. Guess we'll have to wait for a review.

Panasonic has changed their RRP on these units

Now:
DMR-BW780 $999
DMR-BW880 $1199

http://panasonic.com...m?objectID=3513

I noticed this after looking around on the net and found this

DMR-BW880
http://www.digitalce...m-recorder.html

and

DMR-BW780
http://www.digitalce...m-recorder.html

So I now have a DMR-BW880 on order and for the long days of waiting for it to arrive.  :o

Hardly makes the $950 for a superseded DMR-BW750 that I was offered at JB Hi-Fi seem like a great deal.

I might as well just wait for the 780 to appear in the shops?

Panasonic have a knack for doing this - changing their RRP before the devices hit the shops. Wait another couple of months and I'm sure their'll be another drop.

here's the generic reply from Panasonic....

Thank you for taking the time to contact Panasonic with your enquiry.

Panasonic Australia is only able to offer details on the Australian Released products, We are to confirm that different versions of models are available in other countries. We are not able to advise why the Japanese models have a different size HDD.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your valuable feedback. As a company that is focused on the voice of our customers we always appreciate it when they take the time to advise us of their experiences, both positive and negative, with Panasonic products.

Kind Regards,

Gavin.

Same with PC parts, regularly dropping in price.

Although with the Aus$ dropping, you will probably here the manufacturers come out with prices must rise.

Anyway, can't wait now, it is a done deal.

They can be bought in store for $949.

Will the new models cost a lot more?

Compared to this $829 + delivery  :D

:excl: If I was to get stuff off CP atm, I would be wanting to get it in-store, pay for it and walk out with it there and then, no come back and pick up later stuff.

I was told if you can find them get the old model and save, there is not much different.

It's a pity the HHD wasn't raised to 1Tb for the new top model but given how much the old models originally cost, (around $2000 for the 500Gb) $800-$900 for them today is a bargain considering it's still the only make on the market with BluRay recording. This one feature alone would make me NOT by the LG HD models which are limited in what features they now have (Now recording the disc, on in unit editing and no AV inputs) and they still cost just as much as the Panasonic's! The only thing the LG has the Pan doesn't is WiFi.

WiFi streaming HD content is touchy at best. It's not as reliable as ethernet.

Well done.

Only 780's I could find near me this morning were at Harvey Norman Frankston VIC with a sticker price of $999 which is the RRP on Panasonic's website.

I know, plus I have an ethernet connection where it would be used.

I'm just wondering how much different the 750 is to the 780?
I've been told the 750 can be had for as low as $799.

Has anyone done better than this at a bricks and mortar store?
