I always thought that this was meant to be a dog of a movie, albeit with some good AQ + PQ at the cinemas. Would like to hear what other people think. I'm also aware that OZ will have a steel case for this movie from memory.

Yep, looks like the goods! I saw this at the local cinemas. One of the worst experiences iv'e had in regard to sound and picture. But i actually really enjoyed the movie regardless of the reviews :P

Yes, a 5 & 5 is a tantalising thought. The cinema reviews for this one were either dreadful or fantastic  Since I was going to see it at the cinema anyway with my other half, I can justify the purchase.

Unfortunately its ultimately a fizzer. One of those 'concept' movies where the idea is brilliant but at some point the movie exec's say "How about as an ending we say it was all a magic fairy, ties things up quite neatly don't you think?" :)

Some uber realistic disaster scenes (they put a lot of the budget into them) that may well filter into new mainstream movies.

One of the few movies in my life I haven't watched through to the end (wiki'd the plot details)

Is Cage a liability or an asset? How far into it did you get? Must admit I would have trouble remembering the few films I have not been able to take to the end :o This is not a good support to my purchase justification  .

I think movies of this type are always subjective and it greatly depends on what floats your boat, I haven't seen it (bar previews) but I really like these type's of movies, I really liked Cage in Next and enjoyed that as well (another soft ending but PG  )

Remember the first Indy flick had a very subjective view to it and they don't make em like that anymore....

Watched this two nights ago off channel usenet and was very surprised given the reviews - there are a few key scenes were a good LFE is a MUST - Shocked the Hell out us at one point (wont say which though, you'll know when you see it).

A definite watch if you haven't seen it ... ignore the reviews and try to forget it's nic cage.

Hard to say ... I think it would depend on what other releases are out at the same time ... it's not in the realm of Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, Star Trek or Transformers ... so they'd be the first ones on my list before this as a purchase ... Mid/Low $20's I'd buy it if the transfer is as good as the one reviewed above.

About 75% I suppose. I must admit this movie delves into definite horror elements which is unusual in a SciFi offering. It does seem to garner opposing definite reviews (either rubbish or great) so on that basis I suppose you might as well watch it - who knows you might be in the I like it camp :) Probably would rent it though to find out.

I saw this at the movies and although no longer a fan of Nic's I do love End of the world type flicks and really enjoyed this one. Having said that I did come out saying that it could have been a GREAT movie if they had done this and not that etc, the kind of movie where all the right elements are there but they still managed to screw it up.  If your really picky about your storylines and endings than this is not for you but if you just want to go along for the ride then you should definetly watch it.  If the transfer is done well then it will make a good Blu, I thought the cast did a good job even Nic just a pitty they didn't use Rose better.  There where some nice scares I just wish directors wouldn't be so in your face with the symbolism hello we have more than half a brain cell it doesn't need to be so bloody obvious.

Want to watch it just because they used my old office and conference room for part of it, and the coffee shop I always had lunch in. Other than that, no particular interest.

Watch this @ the movies coz we won a pair of tickets...  I think the audio + video experience will be great on BD...

But this movie is deeply religious stuffs disguised as scifi  .. I don't mind either genres, it's the disguising part I dun really like...

Good for rental too I think.. I might consider getting it if it's cut differently... :ninja:

i thought this movie was like a cross between Signs and the Day The Earth Stood Still, its not a ballsy guns blazing sci action movie, more of a sci fi thriller, it is 80% driven by dialogue but the 2 or 3 scenes of devistation are very very realistic, and those scenes alone would be worth atleast hiring the blu to hear those scenes in surround sound and then deciding if its worth the purchase.

Really looking forward to this too.

After seeing it in the cinemas and feeling very tense throughout (the movie doesn't really let you off the hook much!) I was hoping for a good Blu-ray transfer and was excited after reading the review about the PQ and AQ.

Highdefdigest seem to concur as well.

I'd say it's a keeper for sure but the missus absolutely hated it and there seems to be a general love or hate feeling towards this movie after reading comments from imdb.com.

Some of the effects are pretty shocking as well as others have mentioned and would look especially great on a PJ.

EDIT: By "shocking", I mean in a good way.

Does anybody have any idea on the audio specs for the Region B release? JB Hi Fi lists Dolby True, EZY DVD lists DTS HD and as usual, amazon.uk don't say anything

I just finished watching this on BR (Region A) and I really enjoyed it, despite the wooden acting and clunky dialogue.  The Christain overtones may not be to everyone's taste but it didn't bother me. It has a similar feel to 'Signs' but with extra action.

Without a doubt the soundtrack was the star of the show. This one absolutely rocked the house, not only with its depth but also realism. Master and Commander and Daredevil have been my 'go to' BR discs for audio demos for some time, but this track is the best I've heard on Blu-ray. It has incredible dynamic range and the amount of detail was just wonderful. The first 20 minutes are pretty tame (although very detailed and immersive), but don't let this encourage you to crank it up a few more dB. The action/destruction sections are recorded at a very high volume level - I had my Yammie Z7 set at -22dB and that was more than loud enough. Some scenes will test your speakers, so be careful.

Surround sound steering and ambience is first rate. No matter what is happening on-screen there is always some sound coming from the rear speakers, however they are not utilised to the point of distraction. The surrounds are loud when they need to be during the action, but soft and well integrated during quieter scenes. There is plenty bass to be heard/felt in 'Knowing', but like the surrounds it is not used unnecessarily and always remains tight and clear. There is one scene at the end where I thought my poor subs were going to give up - possibly the deepest bass I've experienced on a movie soundtrack. But what really impressed me was the variation of low frequencies you hear in the soundtrack. Not all the bass is window-breaking in its depth or volume, but rather is perfectly matched to what is happening on-screen. It's something that stood out to me like no other movie.

Some dialogue was hard to hear, but it had more to do with the actors mumbling than the level being too low. There was also some great panning across the front soundstage, often in the quieter moments of the movie. Little sound details abound in this movie and make it a pleasure to listen to.

I noticed that the previews before the movie are recorded in DTS-HD MA - never seen this before.

The video was also impressive but a couple of things are worth mentioning. People's faces and any close-up shot seemed slightly soft, but any of the background details remained really sharp. There was practically no grain, but blacks could have been slightly blacker. This isn't a movie that pops off the screen - the detail is there but the colours seem a little subdued, and overall it looks a little flat. The 'look' of the film may have been intentional, but the guy who directed this also directed 'I, Robot' and the two films look very different, even though the same cameras were used.

So the audio is reference without a doubt, and the video is a solid effort. So even if you dont think you'll like the movie, buy it for the soundtrack!

just finished watching this on 'Channel720p' ....   and as quoted a few posts earlier..   this is definitely a DOG of a film.   Alex Proyas.... what have you done ???

Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade or diss any comments - but BEST SOUNDTRACK ??  I think not.  I would suggest that you wait til APOCALYPSE NOW hits the high def arena (or seek it out on DVD) for the mastery of creating SOUND - and not just some 'whispery' voices coming from the rear speakers.

Apart from the TRAILER SPOILING plane crash - there's quite little in the way of action sequences - normally the 'home of surround sound engineers'.   There's one truely bad CGI sequence - they should have noted how DIE HARD 3 did it.

On the whole - the soundtrack was pretty average - nothing overly special - though I do love the piece of music which was also featured at the start of THE FALL (if anyone wants a DEMO video - this is well worth seeking).   I'm assuming that it was Beethoven.

As a mate wrote on FACEBOOK .....   I wish I could get those 2 hours back.

PS -  I've had my fill of END OF THE WORLD films in recent days.  This.. on top of THE HAPPENING (beware of the wind !!) ... I think I'll stick to Aptow comedies. PINEAPPLE EXPRESS... here I come.

finished watching this one this evening. really quite enjoyed it. but do like scifi's so something for me. rather suprisingly my wife got taken by it as well. we checked out rotten tomatoes for reviews after out of curiosity and were rather suprised to find it got quite a poor 35% !  at the movies david and margaret seemed to quite like aspects of it. so perhaps one of those movies I think people either love or hate !

if you finish watching the movies the extras are well worth looking at. one real suprise for the both of us was all the aussie accents that kept popping up in the extras. a bit of searching
http://en.wikipedia....g_(film)brought us to realisation the bulk of this movie was made in melbourne of all places !  :o   hehe

PQ wise was rather good I think. And the AQ wow ! a thrilling track with excellent use of surrounds/effects and the Bass ! hehe
