With the introduction of the new HD10 Sports channel and Freeview TV, how much will we actually get to see in Canberra due to the fact we have to put up with the second rate SC10, Prime and WIN versions of the major networks.  I've been reading through other forum threads on here and have noticed all the things we are missing out on (live sport and older shows), that is currently already being shown in HD in the other capital cities.  Will these country networks ever be able to catch up?

Mozcat,
The answer to your question is a matter of population numbers. For example the number of people in the WIN coverage area nationally is about equal to all the channel 9s in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin and the NBN's North Eastern NSW. However when you compare the number of transmitters and linking systems which have to be bought, the channel 9s get it easy.

Remember that STW9, Perth and NWS9 Adelaide are both owned by WIN.

Also remember that all of WA except Perth is yet to get any commercial digital TV.

Will only be a matter of time before $even gobbles up Prime and WIN either gobbles up TEN or Nein. The way FTA is loosing money hand over fist at the moment, it is only a matter of time before the govt drops to 75% or 80% audience reach rule, can't remember the exact figure, so as to keep the industry going. Then and then will the long suffering regional viewers might get some parity with metro viewers? Who knows, big changes are no doubt coming.

Ownership limits prevent such takeovers.

Forgetting the numbers games and ownership restrictions for a moment , i personally think its a joke that we do get the same digital HD coverage that the metro areas enjoy. The whole point of this Freeview is to again get the wider population to embrace digital tv. I bought a HD tele but seriously wonder why i bothered.

Ten's new One HD starts tonight with AFL in metro areas while I sit here in Canberra and what am I looking at...the f#$ing HD loop!

Anyway that's my whinge for the week. Any one else agree?  And btw i don't care to hear again about the operating constraints with advertising and flicking between feeds etc. It's all been discussed before. Its time the regional networks pulled finger and and started to deliver on HD! Particularly SC10.

Is ONE HD a new channel that needs to be tuned in, or just Ten HD with a new name?

Also I'm guessing we wont be getting this any time soon on the awful Southern Cross we have in Canberra rather than Ten? Lovely they advertisethe hell out of it anyway

TEN no longer transmits anything but sport* on the HD channel.  As I said quite a while ago the only way SC10 viewers would see the SCI-FI (or other content) that was on Ten's breakaway programming would be if Ten itself re-ran the content.  Now that '24 hour sport*' is being run on Ten's HD and additional SD channels (simulcast) that isn't likely to happen any time soon (think 6 months or more).

*poker IMO is not a sport

They're just showing how little they care about their viewers, this is why I don't watch TV series on TV anymore, I download them to watch in my own time.

I'm not going to keep track of shows changing days because they can't keep consistant programming, I'm not going to keep track of shows changing time slots because some new reality TV show abortion needs the earlier slot, and now I'm not going to keep track of them changing the channels they're shown on.

No regrets for buying a 500gb hard drive for the PS3 and getting an unlimited download plan here.

Encouraged to see that during the SD broadcast of the Master Golf this morning, that SC10 had an ad saying that HD ONE was "coming soon".

I remain a bit sceptical, but this is the most promising sign we have seen so far that we might actually be getting there.

They showed the same thing during the F1 race in Melbourne.  Doubt if we will get it until at least July/August/September this year.

Don't forget that they must show something like 1000hrs of HD in the year.  If they don't show the channel until November then they still reach their quota

I suppose it depends on how you define "soon".

For me that is within a month or so, but doubt that SC10 think that.

But I do wonder why they would run the ads if they plan to wait until the end of the year.  Maybe its just to stop people calling and abusing them!!

I will be leaving Canberra at the end of this year as I am a roaming employee of the Department of Defence.  Looking back I can say that I have enjoyed my time here.  Unfortunately there are three issues that won't seem to go away.  The first one is the ongoing delays to TEN HD (now ONE HD) They say it's coming in the next few months but I'm not holding my breath on that promise.  The second one is where I live at Harrison I am capped on ADSL1 broadband where half the time it runs at dial-up speed as the Crace exchange is suffering from severe backhaul congestion issues.  With all the new houses going up around here it's only going to get worse unless Tel$tra upgrades infrastructure.  The third one is Optus mobile coverage around here is shocking to put it nicely.  Half the time calls just don't get through or constantly drop out mid conversation.  Other than that Canberra's not a bad place to call home.

I"m on the Crace exchange, I told them where they could put their ADSL1 and got myself TransACT cable. Even if you're leaving town I'd recomend it as if you move outside their area they cancel your contract at no fee.

I wonder if TransACT runs seperate infrastructure to be able to offer ADSL2+ as Tel$tra's lines only offer standard ADSL running through the Crace exchange via a RIM.

Crace exchange supports ADSL2+ as long as you're close enough.

I'm in Giralang, and I'm not close enough. No way I was going to pay the rip off pricing of ADSL1, if you're going to have 1/40th of the speed, I'm not going to pay nearly the same price.

Yea, 8mb cable on the Velocity 20gig on peak unlimited off peak plan.

The only thing about it that annoyed me is TransACT wont rent you cable without renting you a phone line. Kinda defeats the purpose, I would of quite happily had no phone line.

Somebody mentioned to me that Channel 10 HD (Channel 50) were now showing on the demo loop, an occasional ticker banner saying something to the effect

"We are excited to announce that ONE HD (the 24/7 Sport Channel) will be broadcast on this channel in the coming months."

Had a look myself and sure enough, there it was.  don't know how often they broadcast it, but it is there.

Yet again very vague and non specific, but does indicate something is about to happen, and I would assume by June at the latest.  "Coming Months" could - but I don't believe does - mean November/December.

Something would need to happen soon otherwise they won't be able to broadcast their minimum number of hours of native HD content.  I haven't seen anything on Channel 50 for several months now but I will stand to be corrected.

certainly I've not seen anything on the EPG ... a pity I was enjoying the "Ring" and a few other shows earlier this year.

Equally, I stand to be corrected, but I think the requirement is for 1000 hours by the end of the year.

Given that ONE HD will be 24/7 that only requires 42 days, so mid November would get them across the line.... <_<
