Select isn't requiring people to buy one of their STBs for the fun of it.

The folks with a patch over one eye have caused pay tv companies using encryption systems some ire and aggravation over the years - small ones have had a lot of bother recently just ask Jadeworld or Tvplus.

Upgrades to streams and special mods are not cheap. I bet Selectv wish they never allowed card only subs but probably had no choice at start up and factored problems with it into their calculations and business plans. I would imagine they will faze them out over time.

I suspect they won't do any sort of roll out or replacement rather rely on subscribers cancelling over time to cull the herd.

How would you plan on using it if you don't establish an account with Select?

IIRC if you had an account and cancelled it but kept the card and go to reactivate the card again they'll let you do it.  If you happen to 'come across a card' and weren't a subscriber I suspect they'll want you to get their STB and a new card.  There's one sure way to find out....

Reading this post http://www.austech.i...626-post12.html

It seems you can't even if you were previously a subscriber or not...

Customers who have purchased a gamma card will no longer have service. This presents a GREAT opportunity for SelecTV Dealers. These customers have all the necessary equipment to subscribe to SelecTV. Previous subscribers to SelecTV can re-susbcribe using their original Smart Card. Dealers can also use existing stock of the SelecTV Smart Card Kits to subscribe customers, however SelecTV has discontinued re-supply of these kits.
Looks like they are changing the rules as they go!  :o

If you are after a card only subscription then it wouldn't be a bad idea to snap one up as AFAIK select is no longer supplying 'card only' kits to dealers as selling cards only completely defeats the whole purpose of selling card + STB combos.

So I cancelled my selectv subscription today.

I was told that I could keep the card and activate it at a later date again if I so desired.

When I mentioned I had heard that dealers were being required to return card only kits etc etc, the comment was that my advice was incorrect.

Since I'm out of the loop after Jim's antennas took over installation functions in my part of the world, I have no idea of the veracity of my information.

Maybe they are sick of having people ring looking for help with their own boxes and by making sure people have a Selectv stb they can tell them to just put the card in it to prove all is well. I use a twinhan card in a mediaportal box.  I still have the stb I bought with my card and have used it for that very reason.

Unless Select has done another backflip eventually they will run out of 'standalone' cards.

SelecTV's previous 'card only option' as once sold to the public is gone.  Your choice is to subscribe directly with SelecTV who will arrange full install and equipment.  Perfect for Mum n Pops, and Mr & Mrs Australia generally.

UNLESS your a member of the website Austech, and ARE a *genuine satellite guru/hobby-interest person*.

MEANING; IF you are incapable; of setting up a satellite dish and aligning it properly, setting LNB parameters correctly, or cannot operate a decoder or decoder PVR (or set-up its menu parameters), and are even incapable of inserting a subscription card the 'correct way' into the decoder or CAM of your choice, THEN the 'card only' option, available by becoming an Austech member is NOT for you.  (The only technical help available through this path,- is via the Austech forum membership expertise).

SelecTV link - for regular folk:-
http://www.selectv.com/

Austech.info link (for satelite expert people who need NO customer service help whatsoever).

As a contractor for Select /Downer I purchased from my wholesaler decoders including card for other Sat Tv jobs that didn't require that particular card.

There are some other forums like http://www.austech.i...nth-free-2.html that discuss this and related threads. Selectv do not offer cards alone or self install anymore unless you buy from a a third party and even then its difficult if you dont get a card with a special code assigned to it. I bought from a sat guy who had the STB and card in stock for ages and it didnt come with the code, so took me a lot of phone calls and talking to the manager to sort it out eventually. But yes you can still do it, but Selectv would prefer this option vanished completely.

for the small fee of say 100 bucks you get a new decoder with waranty and the card... I don't see the issue..
