I rang SelecTV a couple of days ago to see about upgrading to one of the newer boxes, and the CSA told me that all subscribers on the old $29.95 plans will be getting an email shortly stating that these plans will no longer be available and that we would have to upgrade to the premium plan @ $37.95.

Anyone received anything like this yet?

BTW - newer boxes will be $150 to upgrade to on the new plan.

I haven't received anything yet, either.

I guess that my son will be happy, as there's stuff on the Disney Channel that he watched during the promo. I can't see an extra $8 worth of value in it myself, but I suppose I'll just wear it for the time being.

Well, if they do this, they can go f*** themselves.

I'm not going to pay 26% more for two childrens' channels that I will never, ever watch.

Aren't the Disney channels part of the standard package anyway?
I just checked the website and the 'premium pack' is now $37.95. Way to expensive if you ask me, there's not enough general entertainment to make it worth it. Plus it's still and extra 7 bucks to get the Discovery Package, which doesn't even have the main Discovery channel as part of it.

Only the current base package. When SelecTV was launched a few years ago the channel lineup was a little different to what it is now, and was $29.95 per month. That's what a lot of us are still on, myself included. (Plus I've been paying the extra for the Discovery add-on.)

The prospect of being forced to the current package has certainly made me take a fresh look at what Foxtel is offering these days. However, to get the channels that we'd definitely want to keep would cost $56 per month, with the loss of some channels that I'd rather keep. If we wanted to keep all the channels that still get watched in our household from time to time, it'd cost $81 per month. Even with a 15% discount that I'm currently entitled to, I can't justify that sort of spend, no matter how many extra channels I'd end up with.

I also still like the idea of being able to use my own box. I recently bought a Strong SRT-4663X, which is "PVR ready". I used to record SelecTV the old-fashioned way, by feeding the output of my previous boxes into a HDD+DVD recorder. Now I can simply hang a USB stick or drive off the 4663X.

So as much as I'll grumble about the price hike if it happens, it's probably the lesser of two evils for me.

+1! For the $29.95 I pay it seems it is only used for Discovery Turbo, National Geo, E! Entertainment and the music channel. The rest are a waste of time and bandwidth. And if I am forced to pay more for that disney stuff, I also won't let the door hit me on the way out!

For an extra $8 per month I'd want more than just 2 kids channels.

Some of the channels in the Foxtel add-on packages wouldn't go astray. :-)

Foxtel add-ons

Not all those channels are exclusive to Foxtel. Surely an ex-Foxtel exec with WIN buying clout can get something worth the extra $8.

They could've at least thrown in ESPN with the extra $8/month people are paying.

On a different note, Setanta Sports is slowly expanding to other providers.
Foxtel, Austar, Globecast, UBI World TV and now TransACT carry the channel, so hopefully SelecTV will pull their finger out of their a$$ and start negotiating.

I received an e-mail a little while ago.....

Quote

Dear Colin,

The Team at SelecTV would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and safe Easter.

You should have received our mailer in December, communicating that the Discovery Pack price would increase to $6.95 per month as at 1st February, 2009.

SelecTV made the decision to postpone the price increase date to 1st April, 2009 and therefore did not charge the new price in February or March 2009.

This email is to confirm that the new charges will be effective as at 1st April, 2009.

We hope you continue to enjoy the SelecTV programming including the Discovery Pack.

Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,

The SelecTV Team

No mention of any other changes.

Not anymore only way to get SelecTV now is to get on a 24 month contract or buy one of there decoder boxes with a sub card, they no longer sell sub cards alone anymore

For 100 points, can anyone state the reason for Select no longer selling standalone cards? (its not that hard to guess it if you don't really know).

No. But having had a subscription since selectv started, I am cancelling next week. It no longer holds any value for me.

A rhetorical question. As usual. No answer required.

I was just curious to see if some of the people here that have claimed knowledge of such matters elsewhere actually knew or not.  So far it looks like not.

Select isn't requiring people to buy one of their STBs for the fun of it.

No.  Existing subscribers can continue to use their cards in the manner in which they are accustomed.
