Like most around the home DIY tasks, it takes a bit of confidence in yourself to actually commit to doing this sort of work, this is why I'm on the look out for recommendations for an experienced installer! Plus an installer should have insurance in case something goes wrong, the DIYer won't and will be responsible for replacing their TV if it does fall off the wall post install!

This is true, confidence in your own abilities counts for a bit.
But IMHO a wall mounted screen looks a whole lot better than table top stand mounted one, and it also has the effect of reducing the feeling like the screen is too big and imposing into a room - a consideration that many need to make for WAF

1. The mount does have a reasonable level of adjustment once mounted - probably 10cm +/-. Make sure you take advantage of this - ie. you could possibly mount low and move up by up to 20cm (or vice versa). Very useful as you don't really know till its up there!

One tip:

If you are mounting through a drywall into a stud (particularly if your walls are timber), grease up the end of the screw - I use Lanocote anti-seize, but I guess any grease should do.  Why?  I've snapped bolts more times than I care to mention...

Newer prefab pine based house frames i would have thought are soft wood and be easy to screw into, especially if you drill a pilot hole.

However, this is a good tip for older houses with hard wood frames

so now you tell me hehe. I mounted my own 37" pana last week and it was my first go. Only snapped one screw, other than that, it went well. nice and level too. i can now enjoy my own work with a beer.

Anyone wanting to do it, just have a bit of confidence, although i didn't hide my cabling behind the wall, the mounting part is pretty easy. easier than i thought.

One section of my house is newer and is framed with soft wood... and I also had a snap there when I was drilling in for a clothes dryer.  I think that a lot can depend on the speed of the screwing in too.  I've been drilling a pilot hole each time too.

Meh, maybe it's just me.  I just know now to always grease up the screw every time, hard or soft wood.  I'm sure a pro could get it right every time.

Thanks for the guide diesel - just what I've been looking for!  I have a question regarding the use of plywood, which I will need to do because of stud placement.  How thick do you think it should be, for a 47" LCD, approx 36kg?  I'm guessing coach bolts would be my best bet for fixing this piece to the studs.

Well I had my 52" LCD professionally wall mounted with hidden wiring yesterday and I didn't have any problems at all with it!! That's the benefit of knowing your own skill set - find someone who can do what you can't (or don't want to do)!

I used a business called AV Design Solutions and was very happy with the cost of the install and the workmanship provided, and would recommend them for anyone who wants a professional job done of having their TV wall mounted.

Coach bolts should be fine. As for the thicknwess of the plywood, I would suggest you speak to the supplier (they are better qualified than what I could ever be). In Sydney we have a company called Mr Ply & Wood who specialise in ply. I remeber as a kid I bought skateboard blanks from them and shaped my own boards  B)

How much was the install isilver, if you don't mind me asking?  Did they place new powerpoint and/or cabling for speakers and/or aerial?

...just thinking of doing similar for when I get my plasma.....

The charge was only $150 - bear in mind I already had the wall mount ($70 from Selby Acoustics) and all the hdmi and other cables I needed so didn't have to buy anything. He charges more if he has to bring someone with him to lift the TV onto the mount, but as I was there I didn't have to pay the extra.

Here's some pictures of the TV and surround setup after the TV was mounted and before I had the chance to put any doyleys, family photos or vases on the entertainment unit  :P .

The cables go from behind the TV, down inside the wall and out again at the bottom through a wall plate that has a 4cm circular hole in it for the cords to come through.

Just in relation to Tilt mounts, in terms of accessing the cables, would one that Tilts UP be preferable ?

Are the Jaycar mounts the same as the Selby mounts ?   They look very similar.

One that allows you to swing the TV up out of the way would be better, but this is still really a two person job on a 50" plasma - trust me

As for similarities between jaycar and Selby mounts, I can't comment as I don't know, but which two were you comparing?

The Jaycar CW2824 (http://www.jaycar.co...w.asp?ID=CW2824) looks very similar to the Selby PLB109 (http://www.selbyacou...amp;i=240736560) - check the enlarged pics for both.

The biggest difference is the Jaycar is rated to 80kg and the Selby is rated to 60kg.


Also, the Jaycar CW2822 (http://www.jaycar.co...w.asp?ID=CW2822) looks very similar to the Selby PLB103 (http://www.selbyacou...amp;i=240723806).

They do look similar. Maybe from the same supplier.

If you are going for a articulated model, you'll have no worries with adding new cables...except for pulling the cable through the wall.

I too used AV Design Solutions recently and couldnt be happier :D i had an antenna installed as well as getting my plasma and soundbar wall mounted and all in all very happy with all of the work.You could tell that Sam from AV really enjoys his job and takes pride in ensuring that all his work is spot on,he is also a really nice guy :) will post some pics soon.

I got a black mount (i think), it's not noticeable when it's installed unless you actauly go and have a look behind the TV, so I don't think it would really matter unless you are quite particular.
