As someone else said, the Hong Kong base of discovery only has 4:3 tellies to fit in their tiny dogboxes apartments so couldn't even see the wide parts of the screen ;)
Obviously someone is so upset at the continuing use of 4:3 ratios for the Discovery SD channels that they took matters into their own hands:

Just a slightly off-topic question, I understand Fuel TV has converted to widescreen but how come half of their shows have black bars surrounding them? The ads are widescreen, UFC is in widescreen but a show such as Attack of the Show isn't, doesn't make any sense =[

Discovery & Animal Planet are, but Nat Geo Wild is only widescreen on the HD channel... the SD channel, which is screening the same content, is still 4:3, despite the WS icon being set in the EPG... Perhaps that will get fixed in the next few days?

Finally full 720x576i resolution in instead of the pathetic 480x576i resolution for the past 15 years an no more combined letter and pillar boxing on widescreen TV's. Some of the newer series should now look much better.

natgeo wild is not widescreen only the HD channel is so why are people stating incorrect info on this thread?

I never stated it, not that I'm watching the SD version anyway.

Discovery and Animal Planet still look heavily compressed as a result of the overseas feed even though the local broadcast now has adequate resolution and bitrate. So even though Foxtel has done their part, Discovery Asia needs to invest in some larger transmission links.

So what will that leave...Science, Health, the old VH1 (is that MTV 'Classic'?), Eurosport News, TMC, CNN, CNBC and Bloomberg?  Any cartoon channels?
And Nat Geo Wild

They're going to have to do a lot more than that before the end of December if they're going to keep their already modified 2008 promise of "everything being widescreen by the end of 2008" ... two years ago... See if they can manage it this year!

I would love to know how they expect to get a widescreen version of CNN Asia... it just doesnt exist!

I got the information directly off Austar website which I thought was a pretty safe source, I just checked back and no information has changed its still listing Nat Geo Adventure to be going 16:9 today.  So why this never happened I am unsure

Its definatly not widescreen on Austar...there has been some mis-communication somewhere.

Someone posted on Facebook about it, and Austar defiantly said someone on there end said they were difinatly switching to widescreen.
