The Minister for Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy yesterday announced a $1 million technical survey to assist with the special digital TV reception issues for some flats, apartments and townhouses, known as Multi-Dwelling Units. It is being conducted by Australian Digital Testing.

"We will survey six hundred sites across the nation to provide estimates of the cost and time-frames needed to rectify problems within different sizes and types of buildings so we can provide timely and practical information to the public," Mr Townend, Executive Director of the Digital Switchover Taskforce, said.

The Taskforce is calling for expressions of interest from relevant parties to have their buildings included in the project. All selected participants will be provided with a free comprehensive technical report.

We are particularly interested in apartment buildings where the owners/occupiers have difficulty receiving free to air digital TV.

thats nearly $1,700. per site - that would be a helpful contribution to any matv upgrade budget.  but this is just a 'survey' and the people who are doing it are the ones who wrecked the dba and still own this forum.

To think I paid those guys money to advertise on the DBA

Now they get big bucks off the government.  I'll bet the testing is nice and simple too.

Firstly, digital receivers, either STB's or integrated.

Then it depends on what equipment is currently installed that is siutable for digital signals.

The most-common problems with old MATV systems is the antenna and single-channel amplifiers.

There are several other areas which may also require upgrading: coax cabling, connectors, outlet plates, splitters/taps, filters, amps, combiners, etc.

Please confine your questions to a single thread.

As I have mentioned in your other threads. It will depend on what equipment is currently installed, as some/all of it may be suitable, or not.

The antenna and where it's mounted is the most important factor. If there are single channel amps in the distribution system, they will need to be re-tuned (if they are adjustable) or replaced.

Other devices in the distribution chain may or may not be suitable, as some items like splitters, directional taps, coax cable, connectors etc on old MATV systems were not designed for digital data and can create digital errors (BER) which will result in unreliable digital reception.

In the case of single channel amplifiers, there may be no digital reception at all until they are upgraded/re-tuned.

The antenna/distribution system should be inspected by a pro installer who will take signal measurements and determine what is required ensure reliable digital reception.

Has anyone here actually had a system checked by ADT under this scheme or knows about any?

I did nominate my building but the only thing I (and the Strata manager) ever got was an -automatic- reply email to confirm the nomination.

I would be interested to know how much time was actually spent on-site, did the owners corporation receive a copy of the report and if so, what was the quality of it.

If you need a survey done and your are on lower Nth Shore let me know. I will do it free of charge as I am nearby. Should only take an hour or so. I will need access to existing equipment and risers etc to inspect. I will also do signal test on the roof top and in a unit at furthest possible point away from the antenna. Let me know as $1700 sound expensive for a site survey
