But don't ever expect the same customers to return to you for more purchases.
So in the end the salesperson would lose out.

Unfortunately listening to speakers in a specialist store will not be the correct environment for the audition. When I worked in the HiFi industry back in the UK it was our policy to audition speaker systems for customers in their home environment.
I can remember vividly a customer who insisted on purchasing a pair of Radford monitors. My argument against them was I knew his musical taste (reggae) and was 100% sure that when he got them home he would hate them. Next day, the call and we swapped them out for boxes with much larger bass. Our business was 99% service as opposed to todays 99% sell the mugs what you can. . .

I think you might be surprised at the prices you can get on many items in alot of speciality shops. When was the last time you asked a speciality store to price match JB? I'm sure you have done all the homework you need on a product but if you can get the product you want at the same or similar price to the box movers why not buy it from someone that actually gives a crap. I have worked in a couple "speciality" stores over the past 7 or 8 years and been a HT addict for well over 10 years. I love a good chat with a fellow enthusiast....weather you buy or not. Remember....we love this stuff as much as you do! Well....most of us anyway
Edit: Oh yeah, you won't see alot of box movers post here after 1am hehehe

ok..........
It wasn't encel was it? I got told 2 subs was a gimmick by some arrogant prick a few years back. I went somewhere else to buy the second sub.
I've gone into shops before and played dumb. I was shocked at the amount of crap some of them tell you.
When i'm buying i know what i want just give me a good price not bs and monster cables.
If a salesman pisses me off i'll go somewhere else.
Hakka.

There's also the problem that western Sydney is devoid of speciality stores. In future if I can get to one I'll give them a shot.

actually i was under the impression that 1080p is a video mode - not a resolution. Just like you can display a 720p video stream on a 1080 by 1920 screen. The letter p stands for progressive scan (meaning the image is not interlaced).

It is fantastic being able to have a good long chat with a fellow enthusiast who works at a specialist store, who can actually also provide good service, someone you can be sure that if you have a drama with what you have just purchased will not just disappear off the face of the planet or request that you ring up the manufacturer directly, or not know answers to technical questions (even the easy ones).

Actually, being a woman I love to see the looks on their faces (the men that is, which is most of them) when I know more that they do, some of them just can't cope with it..................

You might think that given some comments. But I, and I can't speak for others, don't have a problem buying some of my gear from a box mover. That is something like my LCD or Plasma, or my STB (all audio is specialty store), but its a case then of going in and getting the best price, I don't want them trying to sell me anything, making up rubbish about must have cables, trying to educate me on the latest features, as frankly many of them are not capable of doing it. Really they should just take my money and leave the spiels aside as they just come across as silly to anyone that has done their homework.
As I say this is most, I have actually met a HN guy that was really knowledgable and enjoyed the technology (and also didn't try to sell me anything I wasn't after), and I'm sure there are several like that.

As a woman I also find it extremely amusing.... I know I don't know heaps, but I do my research. Usually by the time I walk into the shop I know probably twice as much as the average salesmen so I am not going for their advice just a price........... but having said that I am usually in one of two moods:
I either love to start off with batting my eye lids and saying that "oh I really don't know much about this stuff" & let them waffle on (& I do mean waffle) so they feel better about giving me a good price
OR
depending on how much time I have I ask for exactly what I want and whilst rolling my eyes, I mutter under my breath "DON'T even THINK about trying to sell me a monster cable buddy!"

I like to let them waffle on and then tell them exactly why they are completely wrong.

This is exactly the service I got from a firm called (iirc) Junction HiFi in Bondi Juction, over 30 years ago.
I wasn't sure just what I wanted in the way of speakers (this was my first "real" HiFi) but I was sure that bigger woofers must be best, so I settled on a pair of Pioneers, roughly as big as coffins, with 15" woofers. The salesman told me I wouldn't like them (my taste at that time was maybe 70% rock/30% classical) but told me I had a week to listen to them, and if I didn't agree I could pick another set, over and over till I was happy.
He was right, in my fairly compact apartment they were hopeless, and I swapped them for something else, I can't remember what but I think it may have been AR's, and I wasn't keen on them either, although they were better. Next I took the saleman's advice and tried a pair of US built Avid Model 103's 3 way units with only what I thought to be "miserable" 10" woofers. Those speakers are still in daily use at the core of my music system. Best buy I ever made, pretty dear at the time, but considering they've been going strong for 32 years I can't complain!
Cheers
Ron
