The Stephen Dawson?? Didn't know you're a member here..lol

If by the you mean the highly respected and much loved, then I suppose I am. If you mean the infamous, then you obviously have me confused with someone else! You can always see who I am by following the link in my .sig

Like thylacine666, mine is alot quicker after the update.. Do the usual to isolate the problem - swap network cable, swap thumb drive, format the thumb drive from the player, try different sizes and brands, etc. If you see network activity on the router/switch/hub to your player, try and sniff the network and see what is being sent/received (if possible). It might be connected to a Samsung website and downloading something for all we know...

I wonder if there will be a new firmware out, this borders on heresy, but kinda peeved this player doesn't play VCD or Xvid<_<

Thanks for that. And you too thylacine666. Hmmm. Interesting name. Tassie tiger fused with the number of the beast.

Anyway, it doesn't seem to be thumbdrive issues since I've used three different ones, three different brands, two different sizes, two of them formatted by the Samsung. I thought it wasn't network because over the past two days I have used the same network cable to four different BD-Live Blu-ray players plus a PS3, and all but the Samsung have worked fine.

Still, there seems to be nothing else left. The Samsung doesn't seem to like my network so I'll try making some changes. Perhaps a static address might be a start.

Since upgrading to the new BD-Live firmware (081106.21_050708-1_XSA), I have experienced marked slowdowns in performance. By slowdown, I mean five or more seconds just to make the setup menu appear, two seconds after the keypress before the selection moves down a notch on the menu.

Yep, same here. Had to disable DHCP and fix an IP address for some reason. It just keeps hammering my router for some reason and grinds it to a halt when DHCP is enabled, where as when it has a fixed IP address it works like a charm. My router is an Asus WL600G with custom f/w (I can see the router is giving the Sammy an IP address, but for some reason the Samsung must fail in some part of the negotiation and goes to snails pace).
Regards

The US has a new update scheduled for Dec 31, so roughly 4 months after their v2.0 update, so hopefully we'll get an update early next year. Not sure what it does though, I think it's just 'improved playback for selected titles' etc.

I use DHCP too but I reserved a lease (The DHCP server is Windows Server 2003). So it just ties up the router, and not really getting on th Internet?

I doubt any new firmware will support VCD if they don't alreadyhaha.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I always assume VCD playback is a given for a player (maybe it's just some bad old discs?) If it really doesn't work, i'd just find a way import my animes into my media server.

anyone using the HDMI cable that came with the player?
Mine wont display normal dvd's properly upscaled to 1080p, I get white glitches on the screen. If I turn it down to 1080i its ok. I'm assuming its just a sh*t quality HDMI cable?

Is it a Samsung plasma? Many had sparkle issues with HDMI on 1080p/24......apparently dodgy HDMI boards.

Okay, I also switched off DHCP and applied a static IP address, and now it works perfectly. Thanks for the help.

This sounds similar to the problem I was having with the 1500 causing all sorts of networking problems on my home LAN - except:
a) I haven't knowingly updated the firmware - does it auto-update in the background whenever there's a network connection? While the player is off? The firmware says it is the latest (as opposed to giving network errors, etc...)
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) I changed to a static IP and was still having strange network problems.

I've left my 1500 offline since - not too fussed about 2.0 at this stage, and if I get desperate, I have a PS3. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'd be more interested if a firmware added DivX, etc...

I just got a Sammy 850 LCD, Topfield 7100 and the BD1500 and was also interested in DIVX etc playback given most other DVD players support it...but I wonder if Samsung are taking a different tack...the 7, 8 and 9 series LCDs all support native playback of DIVX etc over LAN or via USB storage...so maybe they think they don't need to offer divx on their BD players....notwithstanding the recent UK firmware update that appears to have included it...

BTW the divx playback and upscaling on the TV is brilliant much better than my first gen XMS888 divx/DVD player...which is probably understandable.

WiseLink Pro sucks.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Not enough codec support, clucky UI. Not even sure if Samsung will release a update in the future (but if you're brave enough to try the firmware is probably hackable).. I'd be in heaven if this TV can boot into XBMC or MythTV.. Hahaha.. OK I believe you.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

The static IP address solution is really interesting.. Wonder why you guys have this problem? Try updating the firmware on the router?

I contacted Samsung about the DivX support and here is there reply:

QUOTE
In Australia, the firmware (2.0) is the profile not an actual firmware number. The maximum profile in Australia is 2.0 and there is no information released at this point that advises whether there are any further profile upgrades due to be released.

As for any firmware updates to allow divX or USB, this is unlikely but we are always developing firmware, and it may be possible that something could happen in the future.

For any further enquiries, please contact Customer Care on 1300 362 603 - Option 3.

Kind regards,

Well I've managed to get one for $250, set it all up last night but have onl,y been able to test DVD's which all worked fine.

Now to buy some BD's during lunch, hopefully JB in the city in Melbourne have some decent titles. (On that note are there any other outlets in CBD Melbourne that stock a range of movie and music BD titles?)

Will also upgrade the firmware tonight.

Just a rehash from 2 days ago, I tried the pommy firmware on our 1500 version and it rejects it.

That's a point... worth tryin I guess (if possible of course). I'm not having the problem but considering Stephen tried multiple units it sounds less like a router issue and more like an oddity peculiar to the player, but still doesn't rule out being fixable by a router firmware update I suppose.

Maybe it's one of those irritating issues that only arises between 2 specific pieces of hardware and/or software, similar to how our player didn't like the 2-disc Casino Royale (pause or FF during the movie made the whole thing hang, only fixed by power cycling) til after the firmware update, whereas other BD-Live enabled titles of mine like Iron Man and Transformers were fine (though AVS forums listed some issues with Iron Man, on different pre-2.0 players I assume, fixed by disconnecting ethernet and/or USB drive).

I was in JB Melb city yesterday and they do have not a bad range of BD's some of the movies in the buy 2 get 1 free deal are cheap like Perfect storm for $25 so i guess if there were 3 cheaper ones you liked then 3 BD's for $50 aint bad.I didnt look at the muisc BD 's though.

Did you check in the menu to see if it had actually set to region 9?
