Anything on a BD playback region free hack or firmware?
Criterion have made their first Blu-Ray releases, and I'm out in the cold here waiting (they had to go region A, didn't they? It's killing me).

Thanks, that's good, I'll try it out when I get the chance. There definitely is a navbar (before the update) - I noticed it like you notice anything else that's new around you.

Actually - another issue I had was that I couldn't play a particular CD (Coldplay - Viva La Vida) on the player. It plays on any other CD or DVD drive, and all of my other CDs (well, the ones that I tried anyway) play on this player. I think I saw a few pages back that people couldn't play many of their CDs. Does the firmware update fix that too?

Thanks again.

The firmware update did not fix problems playing CDs or DVDs the only way to fix that is to take it in for repair at nearest service centre, they will replace the assembly, I'm still having some problems with some DVDs after the repair. I think their is a build problem with these units which is why Samsung are giving them away.

Avoid the hassle of calling Samsung Customer (don't) Care and take it to the service centre yourself, I wonder what they are telling people with this problem now after the firmware update didn't fix the issue?

Sorry to be a pain as i know this has been extensively covered a few pages back but i carnt for the life of me get the region hack to work on my player (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) did/has anyone else had issues???I mean i read that a few had to do it quite a few times and that but it eventually worked but i carnt get nothing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Im sure its probably me but i have tried it so many times to no avail so i guess everything on how to do this was posted sometime ago i just thought maybe someone may of had the same issues and then did something different and it worked if not i guess ill keep trying.

Cheers Ryan

There's a few variations here - http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/samsung-bd-p1500/9441

I did find it a little more difficult the second time round (ie after the firmware update), but couldn't really say HOW...

Make sure you're using the 'repeat' button too, not 'a-b repeat'.

??? Huh?

I have done it 3 times now ... the first time took me 5 mins to work out exactly what I needed to do, the second time I had to have 3 goes at entering the keys, the third time it work right off the bat! I don't understand how so many people are having trouble with this.

Viva La Vida plays fine on my BD-P1500 with the new firmware. However, I never tried it with the old firmware so can't say if the new firmware 'fixed' a problem or not. If you update and it still won't play sounds like a problem with the hardware.

Well I updated the firmware on my player. It definitely fixes the Casino Royale problem (but the search bar looks the same). It doesn't however, fix my problem with playing Viva La Vida. I don't have any problems with my other CDs and DVDs so I don't think I'll bother taking the unit to a service centre - this could make it worse.

Thanks for your help everyone!

No prob; yeah was glad (and a bit surprised actually) that it fixed the CR issue... I'd assumed it was just going to be something I'd have to put up with, some peculiar issue with that disc and our player.

Get a girl to do it..

I tried it last week for 3-4hrs intermittently and couldn't get it to work.. The Mrs got it in under 30s on the first try.

So what are peoples overall view on the BD-P1500?

There seems to be as much negative feedback as there is positive on this forum...

That's probably the best indication of the quality and capabilities of the machine! Some like it some (like me) don't, so you'll have to buy one to see how you like it! My next BD player won't be a Samsung, that's for sure.

I'm the polar opposite :-) Since I got my Samsung LCD which is just perfect, I've been a devotee (NOT a fanboi), and my opinion's not changed with the 1500.

Yes it has had some niggles for some people (mine's been perfect, excepting the Casino Royale disc problem, which wasn't really the player's fault, and it was fixed by firmware update), but so does most any player, and remember people are more likely to post to whinge about something, rather than just for the sake of praising it...

I just came across this and it says it plays divX: http://www.digitalversus.com/news_id-6489.html

but when you click on the link it takes you to the UK version of the page, can we use that here in Aus? Also notice in UK the version is 2.2 while here is 2.0

any thought on this?

I was of the impression that Eurpean players already had the ability to play divx after their last firmware update. I think some have already asked why AU players had not been given this capability. And no i dont beleive you can interchange firmwares due to slight differences in the firmware code.

This reeks of the BD-P1400 so called upgradable profile. Get your receipts and boxes ready for a free upgrade to the next model haha.

Actually, I'm gonna download the firmware and give it a crack. Whats the worst that can happen? Actually, does anyone know wat can happen? I assume the UK and Aust being in the same region, it cant do too much harm to the machine, unless our version has different hardware.

Update: Doesnt update, box appears stating there was a problem with the update data.

Interesting thoughts on the 1500.

I've had mine for a month or so now, upgraded the software to 2.0, reset the DVD region to 9 and have not had 1 issue

Looks as sharp as hell, bitstreams to my onkyo and just does what it is meant to

Maybe the bad carpenter blames his tools???

Since upgrading to the new BD-Live firmware (081106.21_050708-1_XSA), I have experienced marked slowdowns in performance. By slowdown, I mean five or more seconds just to make the setup menu appear, two seconds after the keypress before the selection moves down a notch on the menu.

This only happens when I have the unit plugged into my network (other Blu-ray players have no such trouble). The slowdown can be eliminated by pulling the persistent storage thumb drive from the USB socket, waiting a few seconds, and then putting it back.

Has anybody here had their BD-P1500 (with current firmware) wired into their home network without any slowdown?

Thanks.

Sure have mate, sorry to say :-)

Since f/w update, mine's FASTER, definitely to start up. Wired via ethernet, under the house, to a router connected to the cable modem.

Working flawlessly, as it has since day 1 :-)

The Stephen Dawson?? Didn't know you're a member here..lol

Like thylacine666, mine is alot quicker after the update.. Do the usual to isolate the problem - swap network cable, swap thumb drive, format the thumb drive from the player, try different sizes and brands, etc. If you see network activity on the router/switch/hub to your player, try and sniff the network and see what is being sent/received (if possible). It might be connected to a Samsung website and downloading something for all we know...

I wonder if there will be a new firmware out, this borders on heresy, but kinda peeved this player doesn't play VCD or Xvid<_<
