Sexy Beast - UK Release - DTS HD HR 5.1

Movie
I hadn't seen this before and really enjoyed it. Part heist film, part gangster flick, part comedy, part thriller and really enjoyable. Nice tight, simple little story with great acting. I would watch this again. 4/5

PQ
Nothing special here acceptable but not amazing. 2.5 - 3/5

AQ
DTS HD HR 5.1 Track is sufficient and does the job well enough. 3.5 - 4/5

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY - US Release - Region Free - Best Buy exclusive - 1.85:1 - DTS HDMA 5:1

You either like the rom-com genre, or you don't!
I do, and for a 20+ YO film, this really delivers.
The PQ is, for the most time, fantastic. Solid colour, excellent black levels and only a few instances of soft shots. Faces are a little indistinct, but costumes, scenery and good ol' NYC look excellent in this "woodyallenesque" fest.
The AQ was OK, but there were a few instances where I needed to up the volume (the airport escalator scene for one), and it was very front heavy.
Didn't matter though because it's a dialogue based film and the songs (which were aplenty), were nostalgic and light hearted :)

FILM: 4/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 3/5

Bought this a while ago on ebay, but it has been listed as a future release at amazon.com.

wow will have to look out for this one, been a while since seen it. was a favourite of the time, I wonder if local released and to same spec as per the best buy exclusive.

Yes. Billy Crystal has his time and place! They may have to bring him out of hiding now that Eddie Murphy has quit for the upcoming Oscars  :o   :D

Somers Town - UK Release - DTS HD MA 5.1

Movie
Really enjoyed this quite a lot actually. I will definitely watch it again and I really loved the camera work. Nice little movie about two young and very different boys who become friends. 4.5/5

PQ
I thought the PQ was quite good, shot in black and white. It definitely suited the type of movie that's for sure. 4.25/5

AQ
Quite a dialogue heavy film but it's always clear and easy to follow. 4/5

Some really nice extras too, all in the form of interviews and a Q&A sesssion - quite interesting.

Transsiberian - UK Release - DTS HD MA 5.1

Movie
Pretty stock standard thriller type film here. Nothing special; it's not great and it's not terrible it just hangs out in the middle of average. Some as ifs and coincidences. Would not watch again

PQ
Pretty good PQ here, ranges from 4 - 4.5/5

AQ
AQ is a bit of a mixed bag, on one hand the sound effects and foley is great, albeit significantly louder than the dialogue which makes it annoying. Dialogue is quite muffled and hard to follow at times which doesn't help.

Ambient noises are nice and there's some decent surround usage. 3.5/5

Really?

THE BIG COUNTRY - US release - 2.35:1 - DTS HDMA 2:0 - Region Free

Wow! Another oldie restored with a great deal of TLC.
Don't be fooled by the opening title sequence which looks like a worn VHS tape.
Once the film proper begins, it is a feast of colour, clarity and awesome vistas. Must check out where this was shot, because the scenery, for the most part, was incredible. Every now and again a soft shot crept in and closeups appeared a bit "wide", but the rest was fantastic.
The AQ was good, though typically light on bass and a bit tinny (late 50's), though the rousing soundtrack was great.

FILM: 4/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 3/5

Man, Chuck Conners is such a creep in this film!

RANGO Extended version-UK Release- region free.

Movie 4/5: Story of a chameleon Rango who finds himself in a desert town very much like the old west. More suited to Adults and older children as there are some scenes young children may find scary. The storyline is directed more towards adults. Lots of laughs.

Video 5/5: Absolute eye candy, for a CGI generated movie the level of detail is quite simply jaw dropping. It just looked real in so many scenes.

Audio 4.5/5: Good soundtrack, mainly front heavy but surrounds are put to good use where needed and has good lfe as well.

Recommended to at least rent this to sample the picture quality....awesome.   B)

The Fighter - region A locked

The Movie 5/5: Always been a bit of a fight fan so naturally drawn to this movie, but I think you don't really have to be a fan of pugilism to really enjoy it. For those that aren't aware of the fighters involved, or hadn't heard the hype around the awards ceremonies, this movie starring Mark Wahleburg and Christian Bale is based on a true story of Micky Ward (Wahleburg) and his half brother Dicky Ecklund (Bale). Most of the story is pretty factual however a little bit of license was taken with timing of events (Micky's comeback and his brothers status at the time for example) and left out a few fights, but obviously done to enhance the story as a movie a little and doesn't detract from what is an amazing series of events. Dicky basically is the pride of a small US town for a while as he once fought Sugar Ray Leonard and went the distance (leonard even tripped at one point, but many, including Dicky suggest he knocked Leonard down). But Dicky threw away his career gettinmg hooked on crack and lives in the past moment while basically being a crack head and training his brother for fights that their mother has as manager organised, that he is losing and getting beaten up in, all basically just hanging on for a dream that will never happen. But events outside of the ring change things and Micky retires, before a comeback and an amazing series of events.

Watching it I wonder if Stallone actually read the book before writing Rocky?

Anyway a really good story and the acting from Bale deserved awards, he is amazing. Not certain you could even see Batman being played by the same guy. He loses a lot of weight and he just steals about every scene he is in.

I don't give 5/5 often but this was good. Maybe someone who isn't as 'in to' the subject matter may say a little generous, but if it was below 4 I would be shocked.

Picture Quality: The movie has various scenes filmed in different ways. Some looks like old film footage with Bale and Wahleburg in it, some looks like TV fight scenes, and some the highly depressing poor small town USA. But each convey what they are trying to convey in terms of what you are watching rather well. Don't exepect it all to be a clear peering through a window look at beautiful scenery type movie with all bright colours. This uses different photography to its advantage and does it well.

PQ 4/5

Audio Quality: The sound is great for the most part. A 5.1 DTS HD MA track that will have you feeling the build up at the big fights, the atmosphere, and the final fight is just like something out of Rocky with heart pounding edge of the seat sound. Amazingly for a movie like this the LFE gets a real work out adding that touch of power and adrenaline to the fight sequences. The only part that was a bit difficult is some of the dialogue early on is mumbled in there small town northern US accents, but again it is probably what is intended.

AQ 4/5
All in all I really loved this film and will watch again. A great story, great acting from Bale, and a pretty good disc AQ and PQ wise.

THE GREEN LANTERN - US Release Region Free - 2.40:1 - DTS HDMA 5:1

After reading reviews, I was expecting something a bit lame and confusing here, but the whole family was pleasantly surprised! Not bad at all. Heaps of CGI which I gather was the reason for the not so perfect" PQ, but I found it excellent, bathed in shadow and that fantastic iradescent green.
The AQ was awesome with solid surround and an excellent score by James Newton Howard (who is working his way into my favorite composers list).

FILM: 3.8/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 4.5/5

Reynolds is good and there are enough tongue in cheek moments to keep the flavor light. His love interest (Blake Lively) is also good. Think she was in The Town.

The Fighter - 2.40:1 - DTS-HD MA

Region A - Region locked

PQ: 4.5/5 - Very good looking transfer on this one but keep in mind parts are like a documentary so you will see some PQ that is very Americanised............

AQ: 4.7/5 - A surprising soundtrack here for mine and lots of good LFE at times and substantial use of the surrounds, a very well mixed track.....

The Movie: I'm not normally an admirer of Academy Award winning films as at times I think they can be highly overrated, this one is an exception and you don't have to like boxing to enjoy it, it is based on a true story and follows the path of an upcoming boxer and his once highly rated boxer brother surrounded by the Brady bunch from hell as a family, this is a well told story about struggles from all sides and redemption of character and values, not hard to see why Christian Bale won the Academy as his performance is at times stunning and the rest of the cast are outstanding as well ........

Well worth a rent when released locally and certainly will watch this again........

Super 8
Dolby True HD 7.1
2.40:1

Story 4.5/5
Steven Spielburg directs this movie about 6 friends making a movie using a super 8 camera.
Events happen early on which turn their world upside down. The young actors gel together well and the story works well and shows that Spielburg polish.
reminded me of an earlier spielburg classic with a much darker more serious slant.(trying not to give to much away). Not recommended for young children.

Video 4.5/5
Excellent transfer, fine detail, inky blacks, rich colours and film grain throughout.....just like being in the cinema. Some deliberate use of "flaring" throughout maybe the only downside.

Audio 5/5
Superb, demo material. 17 minutes in hold on to your hat; rivals "Master and Commander" for clout, detail and soundstage. Quality of audio never falters a must listen.

Highly recommended; I rented but will be adding to my collection.

IMAX DEEP SEA 3D - Aus Release - 1.78:1 - Dolby Digital

My first 3D BD review.
Found this 40+min doco fascinating.
Typical Imax style with some slick Hollywood voices to narrate (in this case Johnny Depp and Kate Winslett) which was information wise, not that new, but the 3D presentation was fantastic.
Like Avatar, it's not a pop out into your face kind of presentation, just an immersive experience with great depth perceivable beyond the confines of the TV.
I imagine, that viewed on a projector, the experience would be quite incredible.
Colour, clarity and black levels all great. Sometimes, there was a ghost type image (I believe this is called cross-talk) which is mildly distracting, but it does not last long in each instance.
At certian points during the presentation, there were jellyfish floating around our HT room and at the closing credits there were fish swimming into the room - in front of - and through the credits. Awesome effects.
The AQ took 2nd row and was dialogue heavy, but there were nice ambient seawater sounds of bubbles, waves and tides.

FILM: 4/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 3.5/5

Didn't read this review because I have not seen the movie yet and it's one I would like to. But, FYI it's not directed by Speilberg, it's directed by J.J. Abrams

my bad..... produced by Spielburg, written and directed by J.J. Abrams.
Tried not to give anything away in my review; the back cover of the bluray gives more of the story than I did.

Good movie with some of the best HT effects I have heard. B)

edit; Sadly I am unable to edit my review.

I watched an mp4 copy (couldn't wait for my Amazon BD copy to arrive) of Super 8 last night and my monster sub I built nearly threw me out of my chair (it sits directly behind the chair)

Movie is only 4/5 for me, maybe I'm just getting too old, but the audio would have to be reference if its anything like my mp4 copy

CRAZY, STUPID LOVE - US Release - Region Free - 2.40:1 - DTS HDMA 5:1

Thoroughly light and entertaining romantic comedy with Carell in fine form as a husband done wrong by his wife's infidelity - and looking for a way to cope.
In comes Ryan Gosling's uber smooth, womanising/playboy character to give him a few lessons on getting the opposite sex into the sack!
Great to see Gosling in a straight comedic role along with Emma Stone who is energetic and fanciful, Kevin Bacon as the other guy without sleaze and Julianne Moore as the wife.
A nice technical presentation and though detail was not quite up there, colour was excellent and the dialogue was clear.

FILM: 4/5
PQ: 4/5

Fat Girl - US Criterion Release - DTS HD MA 5.1 French

Movie
At first I didn't like this movie but upon further reflection I found that I really liked it. It's interesting and refreshing to see sexuality dealt like this from the point of view of two "underage" teenage sisters. It's a bit slow and drawn out in some sequences but that serves to set up the dramatic and ironic ending. Really enjoyed it and would watch it again. 4.5/5

PQ
A solid transfer here, nothing special but it's definitely not crap either. 4/5

AQ
A very dialogue heavy film with little (or none) music, there really is no opportunity for the soundstage to shine except maybe for the last act. What it does, it does well and serves the film quite well. 4.25/5

Airplane (aka) Flying High - 1.78:1 - DTS-HD MA 5.1

Region B UK import - region free (untested)

PQ: 2.9/5 - Not unexpected they haven't gone to epic lengths to do a lot with it but at times some scenes do shine, certainly kills it's SD counterpart for the main, one thing that stands out is the
Spoiler
...........

AQ: 3.5/5 - The audio doesn't really have a lot to do but it's a good transfer and certainly crisp and clear.......

The Movie: One of my all time faves and I still piss myself laughing at it, basically a send up of any serious airline disaster movie pre 1980's, sends up a few other movies along the way and is the movie that started all the spoof movies (Hot Shots, etc), love it still and happy that it's now on BR...........
