maybe they thought people wouldn't notice the lack of an LFE channel and that therefore they could increase the quality of the other 5 channels by leaving it out?

By that I mean 448/6=74.5Kbps per channel vs 448/5=89.5Kbps per channel, i.e. an increase of bits per channel by 15Kbps each.

Maybe the government needs to introduce a a DD5.1 quota and have a clause stating that it must be original 5.1, i.e. upmixing 2ch to 5.a won't count towards the quota?

Do you think the Government cares? Was talking to someone else last week and they mentioned how it was funny that prior to everyone having big screen TV's they put lot's in HD now very little is in native HD. Then people start buying HTIB's to get 5.1 sound and they stop doing that mostly. Is it some sort of con just to get people to consume and then they shut it off as too expensive or not worth the bother? No wonder people are watching less and less FTA.

strangely enough

sleeping wiht the enemy on onehd

is in DD 5.0
F1 was in 5.1 last night and NASCAR this morning.

Here in Brisbane Sleeping with the Enemy was 5.1 on ONE FTA but 5.0 through Foxtel according to my amp.

Also notice that during advert breaks in the F1 through Foxtel it would go from 5.1 to 5.0 but not off the antenna.

Southern Cross though is 2.0.

I think we can take as given that gem Is broadcasting full time in dd5.1 which is admirable. Only unfortunate part is a lot of good movies being broadcast on ch go in 2.0 instead !

One hd is definitely dd5.0 why they can't go extra step for 5.1 god only knows

It might have something to do with location but in Brisbane ONE is 5.1 and GEM is 2.0. (Perhaps it's just my equipment).

ONE through Foxtel is 5.0 however.

One over the air is 5.0 in Melbourne, we don't get it through the Fox satellite
