That would be a shame... <_<

How else could the PS3 handle DTS-HD MA then? I thought someone said the current chipset couldn't send the signals out via HDMI, or is that only limited to bitstreaming?

In any case, looks like I'll need to retire my 2001 DVD home theatre to the bedroom and upgrade...

It will probably handle it the same was it does TrueHD as in decoded in the player and sent via HDMI as LPCM.

And yes any limitations, real or imagined of the PS3 transmitter chipset are to do with bitstreaming.

Playstation.blog has confirmed as we suspected that it will decode like Dolby True HD and pass as PCM. Great. I new i made the right decision in not buying one of those uber expensive amps that support these audio formats.

The PS3 decodes and outputs the DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD Hi Res to PCM (5.1) or (7.1) depending on the number of audio channels supported in the DTS-HD audio. An A/V receiver only needs to support PCM 7.1 or 5.1 in order to receive the audio output. It is not necessary to have an A/V receiver to support DTS-HD for playback.

awesome... does that mean that  we can send the signal over optical?

does optical have the bandwidth for 5.1 LPCM?

Optical only supports 2 Channel PCM.. you'll need a HDMI connection + amp that can accept multi-channel PCM over HDMI.

hmm.. shame I don't think I've got many DTS-MA Blu-ray titles to try it out with!

Hmmm I might be tempted in this unit now.... I was thinking of the pana bd30 but a games machine to boot would be noicee......

It doesn't pass bitstream though does it it will be decoding dts-ma on board and passing as LPCM?

Yep you got it right.

The update doesnt pass DTS hidef formats as bitstream, but decodes them as PCM as passes that. Cant really ask for anything more short of a hardware update to pass bitstream.

Awesome news, it shows how important easy-to-distribute software upgrades are for players. It does suck that having an Ethernet port on BD players is not required, hence distributing new firmwares can be a pain. Looks like the PS3 is now THE ultimate BD player, apart from no bitstreaming (as far as we know?  :o  :P )

Great to see DTS working with Cyberlink and Sony to get DTS-HD Master Audio on two platforms in the same month (PS3 and PowerDVD 8).

Oh and Kazz you'll be in for a treat, I watched ID4 on PDVD8 last night and um.... W O W  B)  :D I felt like I was seeing it for the first time.

For giggles, I compared a couple of scenes in I, Robot BD to my DVD 2-disc release. Although suprisingly both the DD and DTS tracks on the DVD hold up well, they are no match for the full DTS-HD MA.
Sorry to go OT here guys and gals but, XxDeadlyxX, can you confirm for me that PDVD8 definately decodes DTS-HD MA?  Does it do this over a HDMI connection on a video card or is it over analogue connections?

I don't mean to nitpick here but there have been so many false starts with HD audio on the HTPC that I really don't want to get interested unless it's 100% verified.  I've read so many posts from people saying that were getting DTS-HD MA over their analogue connections, only to find out it was downmixed to DTS core, that I don't know that I can take another disappointment ;)

If there's a thread going where this is discussed in more detail?

Ok so if Im reading this right (admittedly Im not completely up on my audio support) with my current AV receiver, the Yammy 2700, I can hook up my PS3 to output via LPCM and it will decode DTS-MA even though the amp doesnt support it directly, right?

Wow it took 3 hours and 13 minutes but I guess, give the guy/girl a prize.

And bonus points for the additional negative comments perhaps.

Yep that's how it works Nonny and you'll also get DTS HD-HR, TrueHD and DD+ via the same HDMI connection.

About bloody time... B)

Be grateful its happening. They were under no obligation to incorporate this feature.

I would be more concerned about the time its taking studios to release those most wanted classics on BD  .... we know which ones.

Consumer demand would disagree. If the machine was capable, which it is, to do it then they really had no choice.

Looks like i may be getting a PS3 in the future.. Gunmetal looks nice..

Wonder if they will stick some DTS-HD MA logos on it.. I still hope this console comes in a different shape though.. I hate the current design.. :(

and you're ok with using a games console as a br player?

well a lot of people aren't and a lot want bitsteaming for various reasons so deal with the fact that the ps3 is not the best br player for everyone while i can say that it is the best for others

with this new fw upgrade it is only now become acceptable so lets not herald this thing as the be all and end all because its not.

The logo situation is interesting treblid . It seems the ps3 could be using the cell processor rather than a dedicated chip to do dts hdhr/ma as the processing power needed is high. If the decoding is a software emulation it may explain the lack of a logo - dont know the license requirements .

Reminds me of early avrs that werent thx certified but had re-eq circuits that did the same job with proprietary circuits.Anyway ; dts has obviously worked closely with sony here ;lot of ground to make up to dolby :)

You mean the games console that's Profile 2.0 and will as of Monday decode all the HD audio formats?

You know come to think of it, I might just be ok with using it as a Blu-ray player because there sure as hell isn't currently a standalone player that comes close to it.

You must be so happy

Now that obligatory bit of trolling is out of the way can we leave the angst at the door and get back to the topic?

This is great news.  It was hinted at and rumored to be in the march release last year, but better later than never.  My 2 PS3's will enjoy this update.  Might hold onto the region A PS3 a bit longer now.  Was gonna sell it for a bitstreaming model to get access to lossless on fox discs, but no need now.  Can wait til a real BD player comes along :D

It doesn't bitstream,it's no good. :P .

On a serious note it's good that it's finally coming out.
