Saw this and thought it was interesting

Hi Everyone,

Here are the dimensions of the BDP-05FD

420mm Wide
124mm Height
360mm Deep

Also, yes the BDP-05FD will decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master internally and output via HDMI and Analog...

The DTS portion may not be complete when shipping, however it should be added with a firmware upgrade..

DTS made things very difficult as far as decoding internally (Hence denon being only one to be able to do it right now)......

Thanks,

Chris
Unless I'm reading it wrong, I wonder why it would be more difficult to decode in the player vs the receiver :unsure:

Doesn't make sense as they both essentially take the DTS-HDMA bitstream and decode it to PCM :huh:

cheers

I get the feeling the whole area of DTS HD MA is far more complicated than they at first thought.

I believe you do this download then get instructions from PDF. I tried for 1800 but got a different message when it went into diagnostic mode. Maybe thye 3800 will be different.

Found a report of someone having dropouts with TrueHD while bitstreaming. Sounds like a similar problem as the DTS-HDMA except that when there is a break in the TrueHD signal there seems to be a dropout and not a spike.

Link

Within the thread there are numerous reports of the same issue with these combinations:

Player--------------------->Receiver

BD-30 --------------------> Yamaha RX-V3800
Samsung BDP1400 -----> Onkyo 875
BD-30--------------------> Onkyo PR885
BD-30--------------------> Onkyo 605
BD-30--------------------> Onkyo 805
BD-30--------------------> Denon 3808
BD-P1400 ----------------> Onkyo 605
Those without problems:

BD-30-------------------> Denon 3808
Samsung 1400---------> Onkyo 805

Added my 1400 hooked to the 605 to the list. I watched master and commander using /dts MA and it had a huge cracking spike at around the 14 min mark, scared the **** out of me.

Onkyo TX-SR705 fixed by the user:

Clicky

johnbe said:

Since I am the impatient type, I decided to give it a go on my Onkyo TX-SR705. After burning the file with Express Burn (free) I put it in the Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray player. Hooked up an optical cable to s/pdif out on the Samsung to the digital optical IN 1 on the Onkyo. You must set up the Onkyo so it reads the input on the digital optical IN 1. Pressed (Display) button then (Standby/On). Immediately pressed (+). Brings up DSP version. Then pressed (Return) button on Onkyo and then Play on the Samsung. It should then start showing "S/PDIF Updating" and then "Writing". It does this 3 times. At this point mine stayed on "S/PDIF Updating". According to the pdf file with the firmware, it said it should say "Complete" and then go into standby mode. After a few minutes I could see it was not going to say "Complete". I decided to unplug it and see if it reset. When I plugged it back in, the unit came on without me pressing the on button and was frozen on the DVD menu. No buttons would work. Couldn't even turn the unit off. Instead of panicking, I decided to try resetting the receiver. To do this you hold down the (VCR/DVR) button and press the (Standby) button right after plugging the cord in the electrical outlet. Once I did that a message came up that said "Clear" and then the unit went into standby mode. I could then turn it on and off and access the menu. I then checked the DSP versions and they showed it had been written to properly. I put in Flight of the Phoenix and went to the point on the disc that gave me the problem before (51:26). Glad to report that the problem is fixed.
Sorry for the long post but wanted to let anyone who tries this to know that even though the receiver doesn't go thru the exact steps as printed in the pdf, as long as it writes to the dsp's 3 times, you can recover from what looks like a frozen unit. Of course, if you panic easily, you may not want to give this a go.

I'm assuming it was using this update:

ONKYO
IMAGINATIVE SIGHT & SOUND

DSP Firmware Update of TX SR 605, 705, 805, 875 and TX NR 905

Bugfix: Pop-noise with some HD-DTS material

To carry out the update you will need the software supplied by ONKYO, a PC with the possibility to burn
a an Audio-CD, a CD player with optical output, an optical cable and your Receiver!

Note: Warning! During the writing process, DO NOT turn off the power or disconnect
the optical cable. If the writing process is only partially completed, the Receiver’s
Flash IC may need to be replaced. Some CD/DVD players are not suitable for this update.
ONKYO advise that if the writing process does not work, please try a different player.

1. Unzip the file, burn it as Audio-CD and finalize it.
File CD_SR6050_08214A.wav is used for TX SR 605 only!
File CD_SR805 123_08214A_07518A_07820B.wav is used for all other models of x05 series.
Please put the CD into the CD player and connect the player to Optical Input 1 of the receiver.

2. Switch on the receiver. Wait for 10 seconds. Then press and hold the “DISPLAY” button and while
holding it press the “STANDBY/ON” button. This will show in the display the main firmware versions
within the unit.

TX SR 605:
Within 3 seconds, press the Tone “ +“ button twice. Now display is showing the DSP firmware
version
, press the “CD” button on the Receiver, then press Play on the CD Player. The Receiver’s
display will now say “S/PDIF Update…” for about 15 seconds then “Writing…” for about 30 seconds.
When the writing process has finished the display will say “Complete!”, then “Clear”, then the
Receiver will go to Standby mode. It is possible, that the unit will not switch OFF automatically, in
this case wait for another 10 minutes before switching OFF manually.

TX SR 705 – SR 875 and TX NR 905:
Within 3 seconds, press the Tone “ +“ button. Now the display showing the DSP 1 st firmware version,
press the “Return” button on the Receiver, then press Play on the CD Player. The Receiver’s display
will now say “S/PDIF Update…” for about 15 seconds then “Writing 1 st DSP…” for about 15 seconds,
than again S/DIF Update. Now you see “Writing 2 st DSP…” than again S/DIF Update before it
changes to “Writing 3 st DSP…” When the writing process has finished the display will say
“Complete!”, then “Clear”, then the Receiver will go to Standby mode. It is possible, that the unit will
not switch OFF automatically, in this case wait for another 10 minutes before switching OFF manually.

3. Now the update is complete! You can check that it has been successful if you read out the FW
version:
Switch on the receiver. Wait for 10 seconds. Then press and hold the “DISPLAY” button and while
holding it press the “STANDBY/ON” button. The display will show now the Firmware version's.
This will disappear from the display after a few seconds and the Receiver will return to its normal
mode.

If you experience any difficulties carrying out this update please contact ONYKO or your local authorised
Service station. Please note that ONKYO does not accept any responsibility for any damage or problems
caused by attempting or doing this update.

Overview of new DSP Firmware version:
TX SR 605 TX SR 705 TX SR 805 TX SR 875 TX NR 905
DSP 08214A 1. SR8051/08214A 1. SR8051/08214A 1. SR8051/08214A 1. SR8051/08214A
2. SR8052/07518A 2. SR8052/07518A 2. SR8052/07518A 2. SR8052/07518A
3. SR8053/07820B 3. SR8053/07820B 3. SR8053/07820B 3. SR8053/07820B
The zip file including the .wav update file can be found:
TX SR 605
TX SR 705, 805, 875 and TX NR 905

Note: there are two files provided............do not mix them up...............use at your own risk!

Let me know if you want the TX NR 905 MAIN update v1.08 <----------this is not a simple update and requires PC with XP/2000 and an RS232 straight cable connected to the 905................hence my reluctance to post the link, along with the fact it does nothing for the DTS-HDMA "Bomb" issue.

cheers

Did already, I got a message - "DSP through margin" when I went into diagnostic mode. I suspect it wanted me to disable Protection mode which the instructions says it might. I decided not to disable in case it caused a problem.

Hey Macca. The same thing happened to me when I tried the update through the PS3 it just sat there with S/Spdif on the display. What I did was hit display then it had all jargon then pressed the standby button and it said complete then clear then went into standby. I turned off the unit then back on and everything had returned to factory default. I checked the firmware it said the same thing 1.03/07..... not sure exactly what the number is but it's not whats surposed to be according to the details above. Glad it worked for you.

Firmware for the Onkyo does not update, it's only an update for the DSP (I'm not sure about the Yammy) Which receiver are you updating?

Also if using the PS3 you need to disable the audio upconversion feature.

Can those who have tried the Yamaha update supply the pre and post firmware version and checksum data.

Here is the information contained in the fw update pdf:

Quote

Starting Self-Diagnostic Function
Press the “MASTER ON/OFF” key while simultaneously
pressing those two keys of the main unit as indicated in the
figure below.

Key 1 - A/B/C/D/E Category
Key 2 - Preset/Tuning/CH > (right button)

Canceling Self-Diagnostic Function
1 Before canceling self-diagnostic function, execute setting
for PRESET of main menu No. 28 (Memory initialization
inhibited or Memory initialized).

* In order to keep the user memory stored, be sure to
select PRESET INHIBIT (Memory initialization inhibited).

2 Turn off the power by pressing the “MASTER ON/OFF”
key of the main unit or the “STANDBY” key of the remote
control.

Was the "DSP through margin" displayed on the Yamaha's display or on the TV?
Did you have the TV on?
Just wondering if not maybe the Yamaha display shows "DSP through margin" while the osd on the TV shows the fw info.............I dont have a Yamaha so I cant check myself.

Ah, good point. Did not have TV on. Will try with TV on.

No difference and spun through the 29 Diagnostic steps. Having read PDF again I figured out firmware for DSP's was on different diagnostic steps. Tried those but not same headings as the documentation so I either got this all wrong or our code is different as are the diagnostics?

It has been confirmed to work for the 9.8, so I don't see why it wouldn't.

There shouldn't be any harm in trying as if it is not applicable for the 7.8 it won't update.................but that is your risk to take.

Did you follow this section:
(I'd assume it should be performed after Starting Self-Diagnostic Function and before Canceling Self-Diagnostic Function)

Quote

29.ROM VER/SUM
The version and checksum are displayed. The signal is
processed using EFFECT OFF. The checksum is obtained
by adding the data at every 8 bits for each program
area and expressing the result as a 4-figure
hexadecimal data.
I'm assuming that pressing the "EFFECT OFF" button will cause the display to cycle through 11 different screens with data like this:

Quote

29.ROM VER/SUM
VER.G067
and so on.............this is the data I'm looking for, more specifically the "TI1 FLASH VERSION" and "TI2 VERSION" which should look like this:

Quote

29.ROM VER/SUM
TI-VER:05.09r4

29.ROM VER/SUM
T2-VER:03.21r0
Although I'd prefer all 11 screens of data

As I've already mentioned these should be used with caution and at the users risk.

I will mention again that the Yamaha 1800/3800 are an official German release for the EU machines.............and I am as yet to confirm that any have worked for any US machines(it seems the Yamaha's have a protection against using incorrect fw.........which suffice to say is expected.............link) as I believe the Yam update is a full fw update.

On the other hand the Onkyo update(which is also an official German release for the EU machines) is not a full fw update and will only update the single DSP chip in the 605 or the three DSP chips in the 705-905 nothing more.............I believe this is the reason these updates are confirmed to be working for the US machines including the Integra line.

But as mentioned a number of times....................use at your own risk!

What I am trying to do is find out if bbar and SimonNo10 have actually updated or whether the receivers refused the update

Macca I have the 805 same as you. Audio upconversion on the PS3? Not sure where that setting is will have a look for it . I did notice though that after I connected the optical the Dolby Digital symbol came on the display but it went off after a short while. I changed all the settings to optical but not this audio upconversion thing you mentioned. Thanks for the heads up. I'm aware that the update is only for the DSP and not that actual firmware. Thanks mate.

I downloaded the file twice but each time it's come through corrupted so I'm still not sure how to check the firmware version.
