Okay sarcastic I'll wear, but belligerent! So interesting that you couldn't find out for yourself? I can only think that perhaps you have a faulty one or haven't got it setup properly as in... And can we stop with the "first upscaling DVD player" quips, as some of us have been doing this for a long time and know what good video looks like. So I won't be getting answers to any of the questions then?

Sorry but you must seeing things (or not in this case) probably because you have limited experience with decent DVD players. As everyone knows the PS3 like most PAL DVD players sees the incorrectly coded interlaced PAL DVD and applies video format deinterlacing to it. And why bring up the PAL 2-2 cadence issue, obviously not applicable here and even though other reviews show that the PS3 does pass the 3-2 cadence tests it sure as hell doesn't because it's a crappy DVD player that will cause your eyes to bleed if you use it for watching DVD's. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Anyway glad you're happy with its performance. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) lol I have the Panny S97 as well and agree the PS3 is most definately superior in every way. It's great in real world scenarios, so what if it doesn't pass every cadence out there. Although nice that a player that passes everything would be, in reality there isn't much point in passing cadence patterns that would seldom be used. Anyhow, after the overhaul it got with the 1.9 update which allowed it to pass all the HQV tests it wouldn't be much of an effort for Sony to improve what's left seeing that it's all in software. Sony have said they could improve the DVD playback/upscaling by another ~30% here. I can only imagine how good DVDs would look like then considering how good it is already. Sage advice ajm ; who to believe Ken or Stephen Dawson ? Think I'le go with the credible one... Well thanks for the vote of support CWT but rather than just take what I say as gospel, why not do some further research, some tests maybe, as in open your eyes and see for yourself. |

so? It's just another opinion on another forum. It has no more weight than any opinion here and less weight than those of the people who have done comparisons here with actual PAL discs and not just NTSC ones. You will never convince me the PS3 is a good upscaler because I have tried it myself and in my opinion it isn't when compared to other players available. You think it's a great upscaler. great If you are happy with it, use it. Good for you. Why try and convince everyone else? |

Thank you Ken for that informative link. The short comings of the Secrets "review" is valuable info. The more information we have the better. |

As I'm way past trying to change anybody's opinion of how good a DVD player the PS3 is and just in case my latest postings have been misconstrued, perhaps some further explanation is needed...
1. The OP's sub title text of "much like before" is so glaringly wrong that one can only think the poster has an agenda to push. In the original Secrets test the PS3 didn't Upscale or De-interlace at all, nor did it pass BTB or WTW, the video levels were wrong, it clipped pixels and it failed the Cadence tests. Clearly it was a very defective DVD player. Now all they think that it does wrong is fail their very specific 3-2 Cadence tests. 2. The 3-2 Cadence tests as performed by Secrets are irrelevant to normal DVD playback as the PS3 passes all 3-2 Cadence (60hz NTSC) tests and all 2-2 Cadence (50hz PAL) tests in every other test and review that's been done on it since FW 1.80 and as of FW 1.93 it scores a perfect 130/130 on the HQV tests which obviously include all Cadence tests. 3. The PS3 isn't a flag based player, it detects Cadence, it does it quickly and without error and even bad edits don't upset it and it sure as hell doesn't stay locked in Video mode for film based material unless you've told it to. Therefore quoting articles on the limitations of flag based PAL DVD players and incorrectly flagged PAL DVD's would hardly seem relevant but it keeps getting brandished about as a reason the PS3 is flawed by somebody that obviously knows nothing about this subject. 4. It's really easy to test the Film Mode de-interlacing of the PS3 and how good it is by connecting the PS3 to a suitable 1080p display, setting it up correctly [1], popping in the usual de-interlacing test DVD's such as Gladiator Chapter 12, MI3 Chapter 7, etc. and playing them whilst flipping the Cinema Conversion setting from Automatic to Video and noting the difference [2]. This should only need to be done once but some people may need to repeat the test a number of times until the message sinks in [1] Cinema Conversion - Automatic DVD Wide Display - Letterbox DVD Upscaler - Normal BD / DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) - YPb/CbPr/Cr Video Output Settings - HDMI Video Output Settings - 1080p Video Output Settings - 16:9 YPb/CbPr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) - On Frame Noise Reduction - Off Block Noise Reduction - Off The last two are often overlooked but very important as the default setting is 2 and this causes softening of the image and loss of fine detail. [2] A clear indication that a DVD player is incorrectly applying Video style de-interlacing to Film based material is a general softening on the image (sometimes extreme), jagged diagonal lines, visible horizontal scan lines on solid diagonal blocks, moiré and strobing of fine detail and just about everything else that's wrong with the image that can probably be put down to poor de-interlacing performance. |
