For HD only unfortunately so this rules them out for me as I have a large collection of dvd's I would like to continue to play without having a bunch of players in my rack..... which leads me to my question... how much do you guys think these will cost over here?.... Under or over $1k?

this is a big requirement for me rod, region free on dvd, bitstream pass through would be nice too as with 1080 /24, 7.1 analog outs would a nice to have but think coming to expectation its just not to be

Hrmm.. looks like i might as well wait a few more months before gettin into hd-dvd till these newer models come out.. Guess the movies i already got here to watch will have to wait..

Was down local HN today and the salesman was trying to tell me id be wasting an extra $600 to go the XE1KY over the E1..
Was telling me id struggle to notice the difference.. mind you he never had the XE1 in stock..
But yeah theres is a notciable difference between the two in performance and quality isnt there??
Other than the XE1 having analog out's..

On a 1080p projector btw...

Yeah i said that too him and he said 1080p would be the same as 1080i.. Then he went on to say progressive disc's were only american titles.. So i said well all my hd-dvd's are from america.. and then went back to saying it wouldnt make a difference.. lol

Guess thats why its better to go to specialist sellers rather than box movers.. either way think i'll wait for these 3rd gen players..

They are only interested in selling you the crap they have on hand there and then.  They only care about your wallet and their bonus for you buying today.

i agree, but its a growing trend that even salesman in specialist hifi stores are not as up to speed in the latest tech (hd-dvd, blu-ray, 108024p etc) as most of us here

very true.. then went on to try and sell me a pioneer blu ray player.. saying it was the only player out with 1080p24.. Was news to him that ps3 has been 1080p24 for sometime.. but still guess he saw he wasnt gonna be able to sell me a hd dvd player or onkyo reciever (at the ludacris prices they were after..) he thought he'd try and sell me a blu ray player.. worth a try i guess.. lol

Didn't HJ try and say HD DVD would not be able to do deep color? Someone better tell Toshiba

Whoever said that was right. Both Blu-ray and HD DVD are 8bit YCbCr, so wouldn't benefit from Deep Color's expanded colour pallette. Some of Toshiba's players (XA2/XE1) list Deep Color as a feature, but that's because it's a component of HDMI 1.3, not because it's a feature of HD DVD.

Leaving out picture scalling. (will reduce banding allowing more colours)
Also reduces posterization when making use of xvYCC (blacks less then 16, whites greater then 235 in an 8bit space (24bit 8bitx3 colours)) extended gamuts. (ie increased contrast levels)

No idea what the faster link clocks rate then enable... (above 75Mhz)

Apart from that, no benefit at all... neither standard can go 10bit video or higher.

From the AVS thread, a Toshiba sales rep report for the upcoming 3rd Gen players shows no major upgrades. No new XE-1 model.

"OK, here is what I got. Not too many details, but it appears they were going to do the A3, A30, and A35. The A35 merely being the A30 with 24fps. The XA2 will be getting a gen 3, but not with this batch. Somewhere down the line. So, those waiting on G3 for this one, can't really help you. I'd say get an XA2 if you can, guess they aren't as plentiful as the other models. Back to the new ones.

Now, he said they are most likely going to do only 2 now, as a 24fps firmware will be released for the A20. So, they're will likely only be the A3, and either the A30 or 35 with 24fps, not sure what number they will use. And the MSRP will probably be 299 and 399. Most likely the A3 will "street" for $199.

Apparently nothing ground breakingly new. A3 basically the same as the A2 - 1080i, and the A30 (or 35) will be the same as the A20 (with 24fps). Neither will have any REON or REALTA as far as he knows. I also asked about Onkyo and a player, but he didn't know. He also said he wouldn't be surprised if there were Chinese players later this year, but nothing confirmed.

Don't have dates on the releases. And once again, and XA2 replacement will happen, but NOT when these are released, and I got no details on it either."
