Hahahah, I love those pictures! Thank you for the explanation. "ib ib ib" is definitely the way to go - if you do not mind making holes in your house! All the best, Cameron.

holes, what holes? Just looks same as airconditioning to me  :D

Of course IB/diy is not possible/desired for many of us, so large and small box subs are way more popular. With good drivers, amplification, appropriate EQ and box size/design , an uncoloured deep sub sound quality can also be achieved. Many ways to get to the end result

Time for an update on the whole 'Sub for 2 channel' thing...

Team SGR were kind enough to pay me a visit and perform some 'Sub surgery' on my current system.

Now this may sound a little ominous but really it is ALOT of fun  :D  This involves setting up 2 of SGRs new Subs (Linear Symmetrical Gap technology) in stereo configuration and blending them with my floorstanding mains (currently Jamo 7.7i series).

As the mains speakers will be changing to a set of Focal Utopia Divas later this year, I used 7.7i series for a couple of reasons: 1. They closely replicate the size and height of the Divas  2. They are currently in the exact position that the Divas will occupy  3. the frequency range is within 5Hz at the bottom end 4. They have a dual woofer (push pull design) bottom end that reasonably meets my Bass needs. Therefore any work I do in advance to integrate Subs with Mains will give me a good indication as to the end result when the Divas are in place.

After some time looking over my choice of placement for the Subs, it was determined by Team SGR that my desire to 'hide' the subs in a customised wall cavity would not do the room justice (not because the Subs wouldn't perfom properly...they simply would flood my electronic equipment with Wave Forms and could potentially produce some very unwanted outcomes in terms of CD and Amp perfomance   )

Interestlingly, when the Subs were brought into my home I was so impressed with the Piano finish that I began to wonder if it would be sacrilegious to hide them   the news regarding not having them in the wall cavity then supported my newly acquired desire to have them on display

Now it was time to investigate what my Jamos were doing and set about blending the Subs in to suit, Stuart went backwards and forwards tweaking things with the guidance of his Signal generator and the result was two particular outcomes...to qoute an oft used phrase, there was good news and bad news...

Let's start with the bad news:

The Jamos have a crossover that introduces quite a gap at around 65Hz  :o

And then the good news:

SGR Subs are more than capable of a large Hz range of incredibably tight control and to blend them in to take over where the Jamos are weak is simply a matter of time and tweaking  :)

Stuart went about doing just that and within a reasonable time frame was able to produce a blend between Sub and Main that left me unable to pick up where the main dropped off and the Sub came in!

To say the result was amazing does not do this product justice, I simply don't possess the HiFi vocabulary necessary to accurately describe what I was listening to...so please pardon my forthcoming amateurish description  -_-

We went backwards and forwards listening to contemporary fare with the Subs turned off and on for comparison. Let me say straight out: These Subs make a difference, a difference that can be heard and felt (naturally) after listening to some of my favourite tracks with the Subs on, I can in all concience say that they would be severly missed should they not be there in future...it was that simple for me.

Tingling in my legs and and a gently exciting visceral experience are the two ways I would describe my afternoon with the SGR subs, and I must stress that these feelings are very subtle compared to the assault I get when I use my HT sub (M&K 5000) for music, it really is overkill (not at all bad for doof doof though   ).

My verdict? Musical subs are necessry for getting the 'full' experience from my music...they may not be everyone's cup of tea, but done right they add beautifully to the overall enjoyment of 2 channel reproduction.

Couple of Caveat Emptor points, blending subs is notoriously difficult, so find out who can do it first and then have them recommend some subs for the job...then, don't be cheap about it, pay them to blend for you...it will make ALL the difference  :D

Cheers,

Curious

That man's got my sub (I had one of the matched pair, which was then required for re-pairing)! I am missing it soooo much already.

hehe, an old sales tool - give it to the customer to try until he loves it, then take it away and he'll know now he must buy it, no vacillation or buyers remorse  :)

Great to hear you both are enjoying the quality subbass experience

Good point Norpus...from memory there is a similar technique in the car sales game called the 'Puppydog' routine...once you get it home everyone falls in love with it and it's impossible to send away again

Thanks guys, it's easier to post at length with some passion behind it

So Curious, I take it you have ordered two of the SGR subs? Will the M&K5000 still be in the mix, or is that moving onto greener pastures?

BTW congratulations, if you have ordered the SGR subs.

He he, Thanks Spearmint  :P

Yes, I have indicated to Harry and Stuart my desire to own two SGR Subs  :D  I feel like it's a polite request rather than a 'order' as such...after all it's not like they are on the shelf waiting to be purchased and delivered ^_^

Besides, there is a delay required for a couple of reasons...I have a slightly different requirement for their construction (due to location of the Subs at the rear of the room I will be mounting the Sub amps behind my HT wall and utilising the existing speaker wiring running to the back of the room to connect to the enclosures) and the fact that they are destined to compliment the Divas later this year means I can afford to be patient.

So 'Team SGR' have sufficient time to plan my request into their busy manufacturing schedule

The M&K5000 will still perform heroic duty in the HT system while the SGRs will be used for 2 channel (well, for MOST of the time anyway... ;) )

Cheers,

Curious
