Loewe Blew Up, Anyone know what is wrong and what it will cost to fix? Options

I have a Loewe profil tv which when I turned on at the weekend there was a flash from the back of it and then it went dead. It did this once before when it was under warranty and a tech came and fixed it. Because it was under warranty I don't know what it cost to fix. It looked like he replaced some part with a rubber sort of suction cup.

Questions.

1. Does anyone know what blew?

2. Does anyone know what it will cost to fix?

3. Do I need Loewe tech or can any tv repair person fix it?

4. Is it worth getting fixed (second time in 6 years) or should I just buy another cheap crt?

I take it you have a CRT Loewe?

These have a nasty habit of blowing high voltage transformers (flyback tranny) particularly in areas with high temperatures.

When they blow, they usually cause a high-voltage arc, which can damage other sections of the circuit board.
If it's just the tranny, a typical replacement is $200 to $300

Until it's replaced, it may not be possible to determine what other damage (if any) there is.

Any TV tech should be able to do the repair, however, some may wish to fit genuine Loewe parts and others, generic parts (which can sometimes be more reliable).

Is it worth fixing? .... Until you know for sure what problems there are and a repair estimate, it's difficult to say.

If it's an HD capable screen and you are otherwise happy with it, probably. But ultimately, it's your decision, once you find out what's actually wrong with it and the repair cost.

Do a forum search on Loewe... the tranny problem has appeared several times.

It is an sd capable 4:3 50hz profil plus. Bought in 2001 and this is the second time it has happened. So not really happy with it. If I am spending more than $300 to fix it, I am staring to think it might not be worth it (need to check out what 68cm crts cost atm), would others agree with my assesment?

Contact Loewe. I am sure I have seen a news item that said Loewe are doing a product recall because of this problem.

Not the same problem as the recall.

The transformer problem affected sets across a wide ranges of production dates.

If the original one was replaced before a certain date, then the replacement item may have been just as defective as the original! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (It took a while to realise that it wasn't just standard random failure but a poor quality component, from memory.)

Since its most likely the replacement part that failed, that might be covered by a warranty on the work done, but it depends on how long ago.

Can't say whether its worth repairing.

Personally, I wouldn't bw spending that kind of money repairing a 4:3 screen, but that's just my preference.

Ended up biting the bullet and getting it fixed. The problem was with the power supply board, it had faulted its self out.

I had the same problem so I used it as an opportunity to upgrade to a sony bravia x

How much did it end up costing you to get it fixed sammyg?

It's kind of depressing seeing so many Loewe tv's with problems, on top of the recall.
I have an Arcada 8784 ZP crt purchased in 2001 which just died on us on Thursday. Ours may have a similar problem to yours but I'm unsure if there was a flash before it turned off as we were in another room at the time. I actually thought my wife turned it off (yeah right lol) at first but realised there was a problem when we saw the power button still depressed, yet no on/standby light on the front. Tried unplugging it and using other outlets to no avail. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

It's never really had any troubles before, only one about 6 months ago where it seemed one of the colours from the rgb was missing from the picture but would work fine after switching it off and back on about 5min later. That only happened a few times, and I hadn't noticed it in ages.

I really hope mine's recall related and fixable, even if it's not, I hope it doesn't cost too much to fix as I loved the picture quality of the Loewe. Plus I wanted a few more years for flat screen/hd wars to settle before being forced to upgrade.
