Hi guys,

Just thought it was interesting shopping today. Picked up a 360 add on drive the other day and thought I would see if anyone in the Newcastle area stocked HD-DVD's. Unfortunately nothing. I'm more than happy to buy online, however the masses wouldn't and this may have a significant effect on the next gen format chosen. I did happen to say Bluray discs on sale at EB games, Games wizards, DJ's, myer and Big W.

Does anyone know any stores stocking HD DVDs?

I know Ezydvd stores had HD-DVD (and now Blu-Ray) but my local one said they sent back the HD-DVD's (unsure why)

I'm getting my HD-DVD drive (and a 360 to go with it) this week (I have a lot of movies from the US)

I also live in the Newcastle area, and have not seen any titles stocked. EzyDVD at Charlestown had 2 although when I last visited they were no longer there.
(maybe you can order them in through EzyDVD or Sanity?)
I regularly visit the Central Coast (eg Tuggerah) and the same goes there.

Probably your best bet is online.

Hi Anthonyw,  There's not much around - saw some in HMV and DJs a couple of days ago in Sydney but nothing much elsewhere.  The net seems to be the go.  I've just ordered a few from Amazon which seems to have most in stock.

Regards,

Allan

Well looks like online is the only option, will have to put an order through Amazon this week.

Hopefully things will improve in the coming months so that HD DVD gets a fair go.

Thanks guys.

I hope you're right ... my concern is that Australia retailers are telling us which one will win.  I don't really care all that much from a technical degree - but i'll make the decision for me thanks.

Theres no media -anywhere- here in Brisbane.  Not a thing.. and even the HD lists' on ezydvd are "coming soon.. pre-order..".

The fact is, i wasn't going to get into this race until the xbox plug-in attached to my htpc.   Now, i'm more than willing to update my collection with heaps of hd-dvd's.. but if it's not here, then i'll have to go online.  don't want to. much prefer just going to shop.

Until then, i get to watch King Kong over and over again.

It's because the HD DVD player base here in Australia is quite small along with the lack of promotion to market the product to the general public that nothing is available.

The retailers couldn't care a less which format wins..........." Just give me the money ! "

The next few months should see an upturn in interest with the latest shipment of players creating a demand on disc distributors to supply product.

Early adopters always suffer from this initial lack of interest from retailers, it was the same in the early days of DVD.

We are such a tiny market to these big corporations that we just have to wait till the pent up demand is satisfied overseas when we will get the best of it.

It is an advantage to us in having to wait, cheaper prices, advanced and mature technology and a surplus supply of discs (when they come).

Thank heavens for the Internet, at least we know the pro's and con's of it.

About 6 months after DVD was released, I started hiring a few from my local Video Ezy's tiny selection and people behind the counter were always shocked that somebody was hiring them.  They looked at me like I was some kind of techno-freak hiring these new-fangled disc thingys.  At that time, DVD players still started at about $1000 so I guess it wasn't surprising.

Haha, yes they did.  The problem is, I don't wear glasses and I look more like a bogan than a nerd.  Go figure.

Would someone mind putting up some links for some online shops please. I know theres Amazon and EzyDVD. I'm sure there were some others where people were getting them cheaply. Thanks for any info.

The HMV store in Pitt St Mall stock of blu-ray and HD-DVD appears to be growing day by day.  Spotted about 20-30 BD and a dozen HD-DVD's on Mon.

Using the expedited option (don't ever use the standard option, you could be waiting months) I will usually receive the order within 5-6 working day.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Just a quick question re hd-dvds purchased from overseas (amazon, for example):

Are there any playback issues - i understand that the discs are region free; but, are there any other things that may differ to an Aus purchased hd-dvd? (Video or audio related)?

Nope, click on the link in my sig for a list of the HD DVDs I own.

All but one were imported from the US and they all play back perfectly.

Yep went there Saturday searching for some new movies. HMV have about 12 including Miami Vice ($45.99), Full Metal Jacket ($31.99) Rambo 2 etc. Most were priced at either $31.99 or $45.99. Seemed expensive. David Jones only Sold Blu Ray. Myer Also only sold Blu Ray.
