Sorry to hear of your dilemma mate, the OB is repairable and your SXRD can be restored to its former glory.
Sony cant offer a comparable replacement at this time, it will be interesting to see how your case is resolved.

Owen, many thanks.  You confirm my thoughts on the matter - there's nothing out there and unless they can fix it (fingers crossed), I'd be best off getting $ and waiting.  Trouble is there's nothing on the horizon to wait for except LG and Sharp 80" screens - both of which I am a little (well, a lot) sceptical about.

hey guys

After many years my 70" SXRD has now got a very blue tinge to it. I assume it's the optical block.

I don't really have the time to muck around getting it fixed. If anyone down near wollongong wants a 70" sxrd that needs a new optical block or repair the current one, it's all yours if you pick it up!

I don't know when the 75" Samsung LCD will hit the Australian market, but maybe that's not too far away. I'm not saying it's a good replacement either, but probably better than the LG or Sharp. Failing that, you could fall back to the biggest Samsung or Panasonic plasmas. That's what I'd probably do if my SXRD bit the dust right now.

When OB in my 70" got to the point where the green ting was very obvious (at about 4500 hours) I purchased a JVC projector as I did not expect the warranty insurer would repair it and I was not interested in any flat panel. To my surprise it was eventually repaired properly after 3 months and is going great on the original lamp, now with over 5000 hours up, 25% more than Sony quoted for the lamp life. The Sony should go for another 4 years and by that time there will hopefully be a decent replacement option.

Hi Owen,

In your opinion, do you think that it may be worth attempting to replace the Blue polariser on the OB as this is the primary cause of the green discolouration.

I realise that the genuine Sony part is no longer available, however since i have had a successful result from doing the same thing with my Samsung SP61L2H im thinking that it may be worth a try.

Your thoughts?

PS. im at 10,500 lamp hours.

Yes replacing the blue polarising filter is very doable and not super expensive, it should restore performance to as new. Just make sure you get your OB repaired and not exchanged for someone else's repaired and possibly dud unit. There are a few OB's with bad convergence and some with bad SXRD chip uniformity issues that cannot be fixed. I got one of those first time around and the repairer expected my to accept it and got very pissed off when I refused. The second OB is excellent and better than my original so don't put up with a dodgy repair.

Stay away from SSS Electronics in Botany, nothing but trouble.

I have only used SSS Electronics once with a Sony T1 digital camera.

Local to home is South Western Electronics   who also worked on my Samsung under warranty.

Im comfortable in attempting to swap out my blue polariser, but need to find something that will fit. (or larger that i can trim down to fit into the stock holder)

How will i determine if my OB is faulty? (as i suspect that once i replace the blue polariser im good for a while)

Sony repairers have access to the correct part, no need to cut anything down, what they cant supply is a full new OB.
Supposedly they did manage to find a new OB for my 70", they charged the warranty company $2675 for it.

A blue polarising filter failure manifests its self as yellow green tingeing over some areas of the screen rather than the whole screen.
If you turn the colour control all the way down to get a black and white image this should be easily visible.

.
They don't look look like the correct part as the model numbers quoted are not for the US or AU SXRD's, they all look like LCD based models.

Ring Pinnacle Electronics Services in Seven Hills, they seem to know what they are on about and can source the filter.

Hey, if anyone wants Sony 70" SXRD lamps (Sony XL-5300 Television Replacement Lamp), I have two of them unused.  They cost me USD$568 inclusive of shipping (0.86 at 3/10/09).  If anyone wants them, happy to let them go for $250AUD ONO each, or $400 for both.  I need to also get rid of my 70" SXRD.  In the high likelihood it is simply put out for bulk waste, I might also be able to liberate the globe ( I think close to $4K hours, but it seems to have good life still left), which would make it a bonus - three for $400 deal.

If your SXRD has the normal "green blob" problem it should be repairable, it needs a blue polarizing filter installed and as of a couple of months back they where available.

As far as I know the part was never officially available from Sony, Sony expect the optical block to be replaced as a unit and not serviced.
New optical blocks have not been available for a while but repairers have been sourcing a suitable filter from somewhere as they have been repairing optical blocks up until very recently.
In stead of asking for the part try asking if they can repair the TV, ring all the Sony service providers you can find and see what they say. If they can fix it they can obviously get the parts.

There is a company in the US that rebuilds optical blocks for the millions of US SXRD's, the US XBR2 optical blocks are not interchangeable with the Oz models but the part should be.

The replacement optical block which I had installed a few years ago which had the minor discolouration has not materially changed.

I have not yet turned it on tonight.

I picked one of these up the other day, aware of the issues. Has a yellowish/green tint over the whole screen.

How on earth does the optical block come out? I've removed almost everything from the back of the set and found the OB. It doesn't seem to be screwed down anywhere but it just will not budge. The US service manual suggests taking the front off the TV but its a bit different on their models - you can just take a small panel off the front. On these it seems there's no choice but to take the entire front off, which seems like it would just cause more problems.

edit: Nevermind, found the screw holding the front panel on and the OB is out! Now...... how to disassemble the labyrinth Sony has set up here..

Mine has just gone from ok to a barely tolerable yellow cast, mainly in an arc down the LH side.
Extended warranty expired 13/3/12 - 5 days ago.  :(
Can anyone advise my options. I'm in Perth.

My nephew just bought a new 55" sony led/lcd and I'm afraid to say that the colour on these lcd panels is still painted cartoon looking.
Some tweaking improved it but nope - 'no deal', much prefer to fix my sxrd.
