I happened to switch over to Burke last night (no I'm not a regular viewer!) and noticed that the picture was dramatically better than it has been in the past.
Burke's Backyard has always appeared as though the original digital signal had been recorded on analogue tape by WIN, then recompressed for digital broadcast. Colours used to be incredibly washed out (everting had a very murky grey appearance) and composite artefacts such as dot crawl (around ALL objects) and cross colouration were rampant.
However this week its was definitely the original digital source being shown, as colours were bold and bright, the picture was incredibly sharp, and there were no composite artefacts whatsoever. Apart from the usual minor MPEG2 compression artefacts it looked awesome.
Any idea why this is people? It’s not like it was on at a different time or anything. I wonder why WIN haven’t bean able to show it like this in the past.
Other shows I have noticed that definitely aren’t the original digital source (and are therefore affected by the same analogue/composite artefacts) are: A Current Affair, Getaway, West Wing, and ALL news stories on WIN news that have come from National Nine News. I'm sure there are others too, but these are the shows I have noticed get the shittiest treatment. I wonder if they will be back to pristine quality from now on like Burke was? (wishful thinking I know).
