I could add that the show might have been border lining on sedition & anything that criticizes the current regime is a big no no....

So we may have seen the first use of JWH's new anti sedition laws being exercised for the first time.

Just my $0.02 worth

Political satire always criticises the current regime. Always has, always will. That is NOT "sedition".

So we may have seen the first use of JWH's new anti sedition laws being exercised for the first time.

If we had, the writers, producers and hosts would be up on charges and facing prison terms.

No, what we see here is a much more sinister form of control by stealth: a stacked ABC board that does its dictator's bidding.

You know...  was it last night that I saw something on Foreign Correspondant(??) about the fact that Afghanistan now has an Australian family who have moved back there and started a TV station....  and the program pointed out that for the first time in Afgan history the broadcasts have included political satire...  (they have a group of guys sitting round a table al la 'The Panel' making jokes at the expense of the figures in power.

The program said that this was ground breaking in Afghanistan.... the taboo of never laughing or making fun of the establishment in public has been broken...  and the general populace are lapping it up.  They said it was like a collective sigh of relief as the audience finally were able to enjoy the satire...  (or at least words to that effect... my memory is always unreliable...)

Dont you think it is ironic that we in Australia (the land of the free??) are axeing satire (irrespective of the techniques employed... that is the effect) just as they are opening up to it...

Thank you for your email regarding The Glass House.

After more than five years, 218 episodes and much consideration, ABC Television has made the decision not to commission The Glass House in 2007. We believe that the program has done what ABC does best - bringing new talent to the screen and giving them the opportunity to create and deliver cutting edge topical satire.

The ABC is proud of the outstanding job The Glass House team has done over the past five years. However, we feel it is time to develop new programs and explore other opportunities within the genre.

The ABC has several new comedy shows in development and others commencing production and we hope that you will enjoy these programs as much as you have enjoyed The Glass House.

We would like to assure you that the ABC will maintain its commitment to bringing its audience the best in new and fresh satirical comedy. Your support for The Glass House is valued and your comments have been brought to the attention of ABC Television.

Additionally, ABC Television's decision to cease production of The Glass House was made some time ago. It is in no way related to the new version of the ABC's Editorial Policies which will apply from March 2007. There has been some misreporting of the ABC's new policies, particularly in relation to their application to satire. In fact, the new policies do not impose impartiality requirements on satirical programs such as The Glass House, or The Chaser's War on Everything.

Absolutely:

Nope, in NO way related to their new editorial policies. It doesn't need to be. That's what Howard's right-wing-stacked ABC board is for. Let's seem them refute THAT one...

well, I am still waiting for my automated reply, I doubt it will come, even rove sent back a message in under a week through the hard time he is having. Even if it was most likely an automated one, but still, its quick customer satisfaction. Clearly something the ABC lacks

One only needs to look at who Howard has assigned to the ABC board to wonder why The Glass House got the chop.

Janet Albrechtsen

Donald McDonald

Latham seemed to be right on the money about Albrechtsen.

Weak show that has been dragged on for too long.

Dave Hughes is an idiot, he is not funny, just a reactionaist comedian who is not smart enough to be good at it.
The chick is worse, her idiotic laugh at everything is annoying. She shows signs of being smart, but her humour is usually in the gutter and pathetic.

I liked the show once, but I rarely watch it now as every time I do I remember how these guys annoy me.

Hello! - some one with a different point of view, how refreshing, how individual, - how true. :P

To want to lay down your life for this kind of crap is to say the least amazing :D

To equate undergraduate humour with freedom of expression is drawing a really long bow.

Time to get a real cause folks

I don't get this whole accusation of the Glass House team's humour being "undergraduate". It's humour based on political commentary, and in that alone it's worth ten times more than the lame, brain-dead parodies of the establishment-approved Comedy Inc or the same-joke-every-week laziness of Ronnie Johns or its predecessor The Comedy Company.

People just don't get it. The Glass House wasn't "attacking" politicians, it was taking the merciless piss out of them, in the grand tradition of political comedy. Most pollies can laugh at jokes made at their expense. Howard and gang apparently cannot. But we knew way back when Howard was the geek front bencher with zero personality that he had no sense of humour... the fact that he got elected at all still amazes me.

Perhaps it was a joke gone wrong, with too many people voting for him as some kind of joke?!?  :D

At any rate, while I agree with the angst over the nature of this intervention, I'm with deflepper. Although he failed to mention the biggest idiot on the show, Wil Anderson.

Ever noticed ha ha ha when Wil is ha ha ha delivering a joke ha ha ha he has to insert ha ha ha his stupid little laugh ha ha ha into it as he ha ha ha goes, because when ha ha ha he finally delivers the ha ha ha punchline, you're ha ha ha wondering what the hell ha ha ha he's talking about, because it took ha ha ha so long amongst all the childish ha ha ha sniggering that you've ha ha ha forgotten that it was ha ha ha actually a joke?

Just spit it out Wil. If it's funny, then we'll do the laughing...

(I wonder if it's something he picked up while on radio, where he lost the visual element and had to laugh along to let people know he was trying to be funny.)

As for Dave Hughes: would he be funny if he said exactly the same things in a normal voice? Or just a pathetic whiner?

And don't start me on Corrine. Fiona O'Loughlin - now there's a funny female comic (and positive role model). She performed at the wet mess at a mine up in the Territory. A bit too high brow for most of the crowd though. The bloke that followed her got a better reception with his bum and stoner jokes.     :P

The problem is like it or hate it, the ABC should not have cancelled it, it had good ratings and a solid following, they had no 'good' reason to cancel the show.

Personally, Will shits me so bad at times I'd like to hit him, but I still find it one of the best and most original comedy's on TV.

Wil shat me too, but I watched it mainly for Corrine (minus her laugh) and for Hughesy and especially the guests. One must think with suspicion when the decision was made to ax the show when it was achieving it's highest ratings ever.
