Hi All, I'm new here but you guys are great. So much information it's hard to imagine. I bought a used non DVD working LG LRH780 which I think corresponds to your model RH188. After reading all the good data here I replaced the drive and it now works great. I don't understand the words but the step by step pictures allowed me to fix it, thanks. Does anyone out there know where I can download a owners manual for this or a comparable unit ? I've searched online for a week and can't find one. The LG site doesn't support older models. Thanks, Bill

Added comment, My friend who also has a LG unit LRH 880 found that there are many different LG DVD drives that you can use to replace the ones in most units. All the 6721R*N021 A-B or C units are interchangable with each other and are the same as AAX36470824. He bought a drive to replace his on eBay for $ 35 U.S. I looked at the dealer he got his from and he has (2) more for sale (6721R-N021C). Just bolts and plugs in. Sure would have been easier than what I went through. Mark also did a lot of research and found that almost an LG GSA drive with the H**N designations will work along with many GSA 416*B drives. There is a problem with the letter L (light scribe designation) drives not working for very long.

Side note : Mark and I bought some "L" right angle aluminum, put rubber spacers under a standard DVD writer, drilled the mounting holes in the bracket and were able to mount a standard GSA-H55N drive into his unit. Plugged it in, turned it on and it worked perfectly. There were no issues at all. I was thinking if this worked so easy, no tearing anything apart, will any LG (or other dvd) DVD or BlueRay drive work in these units. I am looking for a BlueRay drive to try it out and report success or failure. I found a Manual for a RH188 unit which is basically the same as my LRH780 except for the different TV hookups on the back in Adobe PDF format. If anyone needs a copy send me a post.

Hi Nicodocet,

I have a RH 1999 and my remote is not working anymore. The TV buttons are working (on/off, AV/Input, PR/CH, volume and mute), but nothing is working for the player, even the power button.

I don't understand why ? Got an idea ?

Thank you

Note : I found a person who has many different DVD drives including ones that will work in just about all LG DVD recorders. She is in the U.S. and has reasonable charges. My friend bought a junker at a garage sale in Windsor, Ont. Canada and replaced the DVD drive and Hard drive and it works great. She said it was OK for me to give out her email address. <chilisbear@hotmail.com> Good day all.

Did you manage with the OP menu?
If not try first to verify if your remote is working (I know you said it works on the TV side, but you have to be sure...). For this you can point your remote to a digital photo-camera and watch its screen: you should see the led blinking when you press a button.
Then, if the remote is full working, try to verify (and in case it's faulty to change) the IR receiver of the recorder.

My RH1777 has DVD playback and burning problems again. I don't won;t to repair it a second time. Is it possible to open the DVD unit and tinker?

The errors I get range from not recognising discs (DVF, DVD-R, DVD Data etc.) as well as playing discs then stopping or stuttering. Dual Layer double sideed DVD's seem to have no way of playing at the moment and much of the time the reader will not recognise anything. The HDD still works fine. Any suggestions?

You have to change the DVD unit.

I upgraded my RH1777 to the latest Gurus firmware and it is working great! Only slight hassle is the space remaining for a DVD-RDL is not that accurate when it you burn to the second layer. And finalising a DVD-RDL takes forever!!

But it's all good  :)

"You have to change the DVD unit."

And stop using your recorder to play DVDs :).

"And finalising a DVD-RDL takes forever!!"

Because DLs require that data is evenly distributed on both layers.  If you record a 3h show onto a DL, it's going to take ~1h for it to fill up the extra space at the end of the second layer.

You might be better off dumping the contents onto a computer and burning the DL there.  At least you can specify where you want the layer change to occur, such as in between (deleted) commercial breaks or during a scene change.

Hi there folks,

Has anyone else encountered this problem ?
After replacing the original loader with a LG GSA-H10N

I can read and burn to DVDs and DL DVDs, but the unit will not recognize manufactured DVDs with Movies on them.
I've tried many with no luck.

Do I need to update the OP Codes according to this new drive ?

Thanks

The only guys I know succeed in playing original DVDs, setted both the recorder and the drive (this one via a PC) on the same region code.
Did you try in this way?

It looks great. BTW from where did you get the connector card (connecting flat FFC to the normal IDE interface) as is there in the HDD connector also. My Internal DVD is gone bad and spares are not avilable.

Thanks

Hi, I´m new in this forum and after read everything related with the RH1000 family I´m trying to upgrade my RH1998H (!!Yes!!.. Is an American NTSC model). But I can´t found the SL40 BIOS (the polish page don´t show me the download icon).
Please, can you bring me a link with the SL40 BIOS ? (I was searching on internet but was impossible to obtain)
The same thing occur with the firmware, but in this case I suppose that the better option is use the gurus NTSC not official version http://users.atw.hu/...w/Fw70905NT.zip

More history and problems with my LG RH1998H:
- The first problem was related with the loader, happily after use the Nicodo instructions to replace..... the problem was solved (1 month ago).(http://ifndef.alterv...20_GSA4164L.zip)

- At the moment I have another problem related with the "PLEASE WAIT": 15 minutes after start the machine the PLEASE WAIT message change and start normally (This problem only occur if the machine is off more than a hour)... other people talk about change some capacitor... (What do you think? is related with my problem???)

- The final question is about the upgrade, when I check the version this is the results:
SET: Ver=60519A_NT Cware=3620_P15 BSP=DMN3 FME
Loader=1.00 Mcard=VER 0.30 I/O=R60.(D61)
But the Loader=1.00 look some strange for me…. This is the reason that I want to upgrade to SL40……… Is this correct?

Thanks in advanced for your help,… and sorry for my english

As you replaced the original loader (the only one compatible with SL40) you have no  need of SL40. Instead, you can use the upgrade fw released for your new drive model (installing them via a PC). But if your drive works, I think it's preferable to leave it as it is.

It could.... but firstly why don't you check if the hdd works well?
In case, the capacitor to be replaced are the big one on the power-supply board.

No Kidding, interesting.

So I use the OPCode software program for the PC and write the config to the loader ?

I can check the recorder to see what it's configured for and copy that.
Lemme check that out.

Thanks

Hi Akash,
I had two separate connectors, one for the original loader, and the other to the HDD.
I simply re-used the loader cable, that's why the slot is so close to the back of the unit.
I didn't have much slack to work with.

Otherwise, you'd need to pickup one for parts, or make your own cable. (Which would be pretty time consuming )

Don't sure to understand what you wrote.
You have to connect the loader to the PC and set the region code with your operating system (usualy this operation can be performed only a few times, after, the drive is locked to the last region code entered).

@pacoKas: after the last i discussed about in the spanish site you know, I read nothing of new.

Hi All!

I am new here.
I have an RH277H. Earlier I updated my firmware succesfully to 60911A. Now I tried the new firmware (100420 beta). It uploaded easily but after I got the error chk cable.
Can you suggest me a solution? I tried to downgrade back to an earlier firmware but after pressing 3 times the REC button and after the verification and pressing again the REC button nothing happens. Is there a way to force the up(down)grade?
Now I can not tune in any stations. The recorder can play whats on the HDD or on a DVD, but I can not record.

Thnks for your help in advance!
