I'm sorry if this has been posted a million times before but I've scanned this forum and can't seem to find the information I need.

I have one of the older 80 gig single tuners. Had it for about a year, no complaints really.

A friend has asked me to recommend a set top box and I've been taking him through the options when I noticed the Supernet 160 gig 'twin tuner' on eBay. I really just want to know if this is indeed a twin tuner, that is, can I record one digital broadcast and watch another broadcast simultaneously?

Here is the link if you need to examine the item.

Hi yes i've bought two of them from ebay (same seller as your link) .. 2160T model.  160gig Twin Tuner.  It definately is a twin tuner, where you can only record one channel.. But you can watch another while recording.
Don't expect instructions on how to do this cause the manual is very light on info.

So to answer your question, yes it is a twin tuner (but you can't record two channels at once)

"true"    twin tuners......   are considered to be twin tuners only if you can record 2 channels independantly at the same time from a tuner

Quote

(Topfield FAQ - All Questions Answered) Why all 'Twin Tuner' PVRs aren't the same

Many PVRs claim to be twin tuner PVRs. It is important to realise that this tag can cover very different levels of functionality:

* At its simplest it means the ability to record one show while viewing another (live or recorded previously) - These are sometimes refer to as 1.5 Tuner PVRs. Examples include Nextwave and Opentel.

* The next level up allows users to manually start a second recording while a timer recording is also underway. During this time nothing else can be viewed. These could be called 1.7 Tuner PVRs. Examples include DGTec and Teac.

* True true twin (2.0) tuner capabile PVRs are rare. They can manually or automatically record two things at once while allowing the user to view a previously recorded show as well. Currently, only the Humax Smart, MediaSTar, Toshiba HiDef and Toppy are true twin tuners.

Note: While many people suspect they might not need to record two things at once they should also bear in mind that this functionality covers shows on different channels that have overlapping start and end times. Networks routinely schedule prime time TV to run 5-10 minutes late.

you may not think you need this, but once you have tried it you will not except less

mediastar 920 and all topfield pvrt will do this AND allow you to watch a show that has already been recorded while recording 2 channels   - but thay are a little more exspensive, and are more reliable

As crusher says above. Record one, watch one. So the answer is yes it will do what you want.

As said this is termed a 1.5 tuner. It is however a reasonable price considering it wasn't so long ago we were paying this for the "single tuner" models. If budget is tight this is probably a good way to go but if you can pay a bit more it really is worth looking at the Mediastar or the Toppy.

One question to those that have this unit does it suffer with the dreaded Ch 7 bug as experienced on the single Wintal/Digicrystal/Supernet units?

I have purchased one of these also.  I've set it up, now testing.  I've run the scart to composite lead to my vcr, then composite out to my TV, so I can record two shows simultaneously if I want - (one on the hard drive, one on the vcr). Audio from vcr to my sound system. Seems to work ok.  I'm trying to work out tuning now.  I'm in a regional area, Sunshine Coast near Brisbane.  Brisbane channels are tuned, but not local channels.  ABC breaks up a lot.  Anyone help?  Is there somewhere I can find out the frequencies of the channels I want to tune?  I don't know anything about transponders. The manual IS very basic isn't It?  Can't expect too much on a budget I suppose!  Thanks.

Mediastar, Topfield and Arion are true twin tuners.

Mediastar specs at www.medistar.com.au
Topfield specs at www.topfield.com.au
Arion specs at www.metatronics.com.au

I bought my arion recently for $500 on ebay, listed for $639  on the metatronics site.

Good value.

I bought one of these about 3 weeks ago.  Linked up to a standard TV to the AV plugs.  There was a bit of trouble with the HD playback at first, very choppy.  I found that putting the unit into standby and back again usually fixed it (I also boosted the aerial strnegth a little).

Apart from that, it seems to work OK.  It is a 1.5 tuner (I knew that - I'd read this forum).  Channel changing is fairly quick - < 1 second.  It has one nasty quirk that I haven't managed to work around yet.  When you are watching a channel and the recorder kicks in, the unit switches to the recorded channel.  You have to hit exit->swap to get back to what you where watching.  Somewhat annoying.

Apart from that, I am happy with the money (about $250 inc shipping) that I paid.

I recently got a YESS 120GB twin tuner (2.0 tuner) PVR from ebay. OK, but no S-video or component output and HDD needs to be bigger. 120GB = only about 100GB usable HDD.

It's amazing how often I record 2 channels at once (didn't think I'd use it much), particularly if you tape 5-10 minutes after a show is timetabled to finish. I do this after missing the end of a show once too often.

The DGTEC have a 2.0 tuner 200GB PVR, also on ebay (selling about $360).

Hi I'm new this and don't have the ability to start a new topic?????? so I was wondering if I could get some help please.

I have a Supernet 2160T & a Samsung DVD-HR725.

The Supernet is new......160 GIG twin tuner job.
The Samsung is 160 GIG analog tuner with DVD recorder.

The problem is this............

I was using the Samsung with a cheap Soniq SD set top box through AV1 to record in digital on the HD. I now have replaced the Soniq box with the Supernet box and is still connect through the Samsung unit through AV1.

I can use the twin tuner PVR function fine to record and then watch a different channel, but I thought I would be able to record the second channel I was watching on the Samsung HD whilst the first tuner was committed to recording on the Supernet HD. When I press record on the Samsung HD it says "you cannot record copyright protected movie". Is the Supernet box sending out a copyrighted signal or what???? I can't quite understand if the Soniq box was no problem why this Supernet box won't let me. In actual fact I can't record anything on the Samsung HD from the Supernet tuner, regardless of whether I am recording anything on the Supernet HD.

I know that is confusing but I would appreciate any help at all.

Thanks.

Thats because youre a spammer  :P

Didnt you read the sign on info about posting 10 times in the Red Text Thread before you can start a topic.

That works better than spamming "bump" "bump" all over the Miscellaneous forum.

Just a tip too Id take a quick squizz at the Etiquette thread as well.

By the way how come you didnt post a bump in this thread

Enjoy your stay

Thanks for your constructive input!

I did read about the 10 posts but what am I suppose to say. I'm new this and need help with a variety of technical issues. How am I suppose to make useful comment on other issues or topics if I can't even work my own system out?

Hey, this may have been asked on another topic - but has anyone tried to put a bigger HDD into the SuperNet unit??

Does anyone want to void Warranty for a good cause??!!!

Reason I'm asking is that I have quite a few WD 250Gig HDD's and am looking to make a use for them.

Already have a Couple of Wintal X10s, and looking at the remote - is almost identical except for a few extra buttons at the bottom.

And I wonder if the file format saved to HDD is the same as the Wintal's??

I have recently bought a supernet 2160T. But I cannot seem to get it to record anything. Has anyone had a similar problem? I'm guessing it could mean that it is stuffed.
I have done everything in the manual. I can get all the channels but. The pvr - 5 doesn't seem to produce anything. I look in the files, open any of the files created and they seem to be blank.
Is there anything else that I should try?

Just wondering if any owners of the Supernet 2160T can advise me of two things:

1) Can the unit do "top & tail" editing of recorded programs?

&

2) Can recordings be re-named?

Many thanks.

I have the Supernet and as others have mentioned, the instructions are anything but comprehensive. I have played with it a bit and I'd be fairly confident that the answers to your questions are no and no. I'm happy with the unit so far, it hasn't given me any trouble. But it's really just a no-frills unit.
