For more detail read Antenna Design Basics + Amplification

This list is selected on the basis of the channels covered only and quotes the appropriate website’s antenna gain.

The higher the number of dB the larger the antenna, the more sensitive and more directional it is. It is also more expensive. The advantage of getting gain from the antenna rather than an amplifier, is that the antenna becomes more focussed thus rejecting delayed signals and interference sources. Amplifiers can become overloaded which antennas cannot. Thus amplifiers can make reception worse.

If the antenna signal is too strong at the receiver, a low cost attenuator can be used. The advantage of this method is that any interference picked up by the cabling is also reduced.

AlanH,
Which antenna would you recommend me for Mt. Moombil, I'm in Port Macquarie, my current antenna seems to only have 6 or 7 X's + oval + reflector with 2 bars above, 2 bars below, this antenna had been fine till now, except that last night the signal was showing up on NBN digital as only 20db, a strength of 41%, and BER of up to over 11(1E-4), normally NBN would be 47%, 25db, and 0(1E-4), the others were also weaker than normal according to percentages, but the SNR was still at 25db, and they had signal strength of 45%, there wasn't any sort of problem with the BER on these ones, normally the others would be 25db, 49%. The current antenna is a hills antenna (not sure of model as I wasn't ever told by the technician who installed this antenna at the start of september last year, but obviously I need a bigger antenna than what he used).

Thanks, I'll go TMX for  the F connector.

Notice you mention Fracarro 10 element, narrow band units but only 2 models. They have quite an extensive range of these covering all differnent parts of B4 & B5.
They also have 20 element, narrow band yagis which give exceptional performance for the price.

In my opinion the Hills SF91B4+ is as good as you will get for analogue + digital UHF in Central Tablelands and Central Western Slopes areas (NSW).

And, Fracarro publish gain and F/B curves for all these (and pretty well every other type they have).

cheers
Jeff

Jeffery,
I have been reading Fracarro catalog from Italy and converting the channel numbers to our system. The European/NZ system uses 8 MHz wide channels where we use 7 MHz.
