Definately a lot more finer detail in the ABC 720p versions but some motion shots would really help the ABC shine.
1080i > 720p |

Whoa! Steady there - I'd prefer if we didn't get into the 1080i vs. 720p debate here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif) - let's try and stick to the topic at hand, which is comparing ABC, Seven 576p and Seven SD.
As I've mentioned before, the 576p does provide a very small amount of additional detail over SD, but the artefacting is significant. |

Interesting comparisons, Anthony.
Isn't it strange how SD always manages to look softer and less detailed despite being the same res as the ED version. Even though the ED version has come directly from the HD source, the SD has still come from the same HD source down to the same resolution, so in theory it should look identical to ED, but it doesn't. I often notice SD looks a lot better when it comes from a HD source. A film to HD to SD version almost always looks better than film to SD, yet there's no logical reason for it. Must be the mastering equipment or something? |

Comments? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Well the ABC version is twice as good as either of the 7 versions but that's no real suprise. What I did find interesting though was the difference between the 7 SD and ED versions. What I thought: Frame 1: The ED version is noticeably better with more detail Frame 2: The SD version is better with more detail. Are you sure that you didn't get these two mixed up, as it's the only one out of place for me with regards to the amount of detail? Frame 3: The ED version definitely has more detail but the amount of artifacting is very bad especially across her mouth and forehead. Frame 4: Same comments as frame 3. Frame 5: The ED version is much better here. Mountains more detail in the grass areas and no artifacts on the back of their shirts. Frame 6: This one is a bit of a toss up. Not a whole lot of difference between the two IMO. Probably give it to the ED version due to less artifacts on his neck. What hardware/software/decoder settings did you use for the viewing, capturing and resizing? |

Just a standard weave deinterlace using the Media Player Classic built in MPEG-2 decoder. Captured directly from the DirectShow output by Fraps, and resized using Photoshop. Saved at 80% JPEG quality - difference by eye between uncompressed and 80% was practically zero.
Seven's 576p does provide a small amount of additional detail, but the artefacting just ruins the overall video. |

I did a similar comparison between PRiME 576p, Seven SD and ABC HD (divx) a few months ago... if you're interested, I could upload them too... there's a lot less artifacting on PRiME, though it's still not perfect.

Sure. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Just in case anyone is wondering, these ABC HD shots aren't from a recompressed 'DiVX/XViD' video.

The 576p definitely looks softer and more washed out than the 576i.

I've BT'ed the whole season, but the resolution on the files is something like 300 x 600 not even close to HD If you check your files would be 624x352 at about 350mb each. The 720p HD versions are 1.36gb which are 1280x720p and the HR-HDTV versions are 700mb at 960x544. |

The ABC HD captures here are sourced from actual OTA broadcast, at 13.15Mbps.

I've never seen anything but the the 350mb files. maybe we should talk about where you the HD and HRHD ones (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) ? Although its all over now, starting Season 3 this will be the way to go. |

The shots here show a decent comparison for static images but in motion would be better. Any chance of a short video showing each segment (or one) for comparison?
BTW, regarding the sizes of video sourced from unknown places, the versions with 5.1 sound are much better to look at. Out of interest, I stumbled across a source to get a couple of images to show the difference. Low Quality - From Lost Season 2 Episode 17 Medium Quality - From 24 Season 5 Episode 1 The shot from 24 is from the first five minutes and Lost shouldn't have any spoilers either... They are a similar expression and only include a head shot. |
