A choice for now...

So far I have considered the panasonic AE900, Infocus 5000, Sanyo Z4 and now am looking at the Epson TW600.
I am getting more and more confused by the day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For 2900 at Trevor Lees in Kew you buy the Sony HS60 and stop worrying.
Of course, do it before anyone else posts underneath to confuse you further.

GeoffB, The simple solution is to stick up some temporary ' black ' curtains when viewing.
If you have any ambient light in the room while viewing with a projector, the black levels will be so degraded that it doesn't matter how good the contrast ratio of the projector is...... the image will look 'flat' !
If you can't block out the light effectively then the projector you decide upon is inconsequential.

C.M is on the money!
If you can't control the light the image will be comprimised anyway. If you have no intentsions of viewing HD, just SD off Foxtel and the odd DVD.........pick up a last gen LCD or DLP. You will pick one up for a song.
If you have plans for a more light controlled viewing room soon, any of the units mentioned will be fine as long as the throw/offset of the projector will work in your room.
If a better viewing room is 8 to 12 months away, buy the cheapie now and get a C2fine/BiNa6 at the end of 2006. They will be significantly better than anything in the $3000.00 range currently available!

Totally agree.......I decided to wait for the C2fine/BiNa6 technology myself even though the Z4 looks pretty tempting.

I have a 92" Dalite High Power on order, should be here any day now. The plan was to buy a Sony HS60 and build a HTPC to feed it.
But I think with PC part manufactures poised to release their Blu-Ray drives/burners, Video card manufacturers poised to release video cards with high power HD decoding on chips on board & PC version of HDMI with HDCP on the way...............couple this capability with C2Fine or Bi-NA6 projectors, possibly 1080p units.........guranteed to produce some mighty fine projected images.
Heck this year felt like 3 months long to me.
I guess I can hang till the same time next year!

But this is the internet, flame away! The Sony was the best in the z3/700 days and is the best in the z4/900 era.
My opinion of course.
Out of interest, the weakness of the HS50 was its lack of brightness, does the HS60 have the same achilles heel? If so, perhaps this is not the best choice in this situation where ambient light cannot be controlled?
I saw a demo of the AE700 and an HS50 playing in the same room at a JB HiFi in typical store lighting conditions. The AE700 produced a far superior image in these conditions. I remember thinking to myself," If I didn't know that the HS50 was a great PJ and the AE700 was a stinking pile of horse manure, I'd take the AE700."
Under those conditions, the Sony was unable to show its best whereas the picture flaws of the AE700 weren't visible.
All I'm trying to say is (as well as getting a few cheap shots in on the AE700

Any of those projectors you have mentioned as well as the Sony HS60 will all knock your socks off when you see the big picture for the first time.
Subtle differences become more obvious in a light controlled room but as I say they are all very close contenders in this price range.

I was in the unique position of owning both and can tell you the Sony was superior to the 700 to my eye. Clearly superior.
Although i havent seen the hs60, the 900 looks now closer to the sony - more so than the 700 before - so I assume with the uppage in contrast, the new hs60 is still better.

Is it just too inconvenient these days to actually view stuff and then have your own opinion or is everyone else just that bit smarter these days. A small amount of experience is passed off as expertise and the words "I prefer" and "in my opinion" have all but disappeared from the vernacular.
With the amount of angst and hand wringing going on you'd think people were being forced to choose which of their kiddies gets the last transplant.
How about taking the time and seeing for yourself and most of all trusting your own opinion. Then shut the hell up about it because:
1/ someone will want to argue with you and call you a fool; and
2/ everyone else will assume you're trying to get peer support.
Not for the feint of heart these internet forums by god.

I'm not setting out to offend - although that probably is going to be inevitable with the way I carry on - but I think people sometimes confuse what they 'like' with what's 'best'. Preference is being confused with superiority. If being the 'best' were just about people agreeing then "Crazy Frog" must be the'best' musical act going around since more people bought that single than any other last month.
But that's just my opinion I guess
