This may sound like a stupid simplistic question, but I,ve just been tols that turning the tv on/off using the remote contol is a no no. You should turn on/off using the power button on the set. this seems pretty silly to me, but the advice came from a tv technician.  Any thoughts on this one.

Depends a bit on your TV model and what you want to achieve by turning it fully off, eg Save more power, get out of your chair more often, reduce electrical risks...  Pull the plug out of the power point is the safest

Personally, I just use the remote to put my AV gear in standby as it's painful to physically press 6 buttons on 6 devices each time.

on my CRT, using the power switch is the worst thing to do. You see electronics has a thing called 'inrush current'. What it means is that when everything cools down from being turned off, the moment you hit the power switch, electricity rushes in (bit like a tidal wave). This stresses everything and is normally the point the power supply in the set will fail.

Just think of light globes. when is the mos common time for them to blow?

Use the standby IMOP. However note that it will use more electricity and the set may be warm to touch even in standby (heat).

Never, EVER leave the TV in standby mode (the "off" button on the remote) during a storm, else you'll damage your very important idiot box

Leaving them even plugged in during a storm is dangerous enough I think.  I unplug everything just to be safe.

However most CRT sets only degauss the screen when power is applied and not when coming out of standby.

My preferred option when switching OFF is to go to standby and then switch off at the power switch. Switching the set ON is the reverse.

If your neighbourhood or house get hit, nothing is going to save anything.

fit a surge protector at the fuse box, minimum fit one @ GPO - but a good lightning will get ya regardless (seen GPOs blasted off wall from a hit on antenna via 100m RG213 coax - its all about your EARTH!), its the mains supply re-starts that I hate after outage (Im a tech). anyway i've seen stats that show HUGE greenhouse contribution from all this hifi gear on standby. Your conscience & choice vs balance of use: e.g. power on > once or twice a day, use standby between...a _good_ power supply will have surge protection built in ....let me know if you find one!

The house does not need to get hit to do any damage. An overload of power (strong enough to blow the circuit breaker) or a lack of power (known as a brown out) can potentially damage it, and the storm doesn't even need to be that close either.

We accidentally left a TV on in standby mode during a storm and it made the tv go black and white... took us quite some time to find a place that could actually repair/restore the colour.

We have surge protectors at every single powerboard, and no stacking up of powerboards either. My computer gets its own powerboard and never ever gets affected during a brownout (though a blackout is another story...)

For those worrying about lightning strikes, home contents insurance can be bought for fused items etc. Personally I normally turn the tv off with remote and normally when going out for a while hit the main switch so it doesn't sit in standby. As for those worrying about electricity use, well changing light globes into energy savers will save far more energy than putting stuff in standby, amongst many other energy saving ideas.
