The Japanese HiVision PVR models that record HDTV on to the HD reduce the quality to SD when they burn to a DVD disc so that the disc will play in a normal stand alone DVD player. Only the Blu Ray model burns to at higher quality than SD.

Are there any DVD recorders that actually record the digital signal available in Australia?  I was under the impression they were all analogue for pirating purposes.

A DVD recorder that records HIDEF would be a holy grail would it not?

Yeah but you'll only fit 40-45min a DVD and it won't play back in a normal DVD player.

You'd have to go the HTPC route to do something like that in which case you could re-encode to MPEG4 to fit more on the DVD...

If you search this forum, you will find that DVD recorders don't have digital tuners built in, at least the ones in Aus.  But that doesn't mean it can't record a "digital" signal.  It can, but often has to be converted to analogue first by the STB, then back to digital inside the recorder.  The analogue signal has also got to be SD, meaning HD needs to be down converted.  Standard DVD-Video does not support HD.  You could place HD files on a DVD-ROM, but it wouldn't be playable in normal DVD players.

As a side note, the DV/Firewire/ILink digital input on some recorders is only for connecting DV equipment, eg camcorders.  It is NOT an MPEG port.

So if I were to connect an HDTV tuner to a DVD-recorder, what would happen?

If you fed it a HD signal, it would fail. If you fed it a SD signal it would be fine.
Mind you not many will accept component in the first place (and definitely not DVI) so most you can't even hook up via a HD capable connection.

Solution - buy either a SD PVR or HD PVR (very doggy at the moment, wait until there are more choices)

Cheap, effective and above all the most sane solution, especially if you already have a PC

As BigBobOz said, you could even choose to encode your recordings so that you can fit more per DVD you burn (only recommended if the PC is fast, otherwise the time it takes to encode to Mpeg-4 is just not worth the amount of space you save, especially considering the inexpensiveness of DVD media)
