The Japanese HiVision PVR models that record HDTV on to the HD reduce the quality to SD when they burn to a DVD disc so that the disc will play in a normal stand alone DVD player. Only the Blu Ray model burns to at higher quality than SD.

A DVD recorder that records HIDEF would be a holy grail would it not?

You'd have to go the HTPC route to do something like that in which case you could re-encode to MPEG4 to fit more on the DVD...

As a side note, the DV/Firewire/ILink digital input on some recorders is only for connecting DV equipment, eg camcorders. It is NOT an MPEG port.

Mind you not many will accept component in the first place (and definitely not DVI) so most you can't even hook up via a HD capable connection.

As BigBobOz said, you could even choose to encode your recordings so that you can fit more per DVD you burn (only recommended if the PC is fast, otherwise the time it takes to encode to Mpeg-4 is just not worth the amount of space you save, especially considering the inexpensiveness of DVD media)
